Trouble installing latest builds (solved)
« on: August 22, 2016, 09:09:09 pm »

Hello,

I'm on Windows 10, running a Z-Stick and Engen version 20. Upgrading to version to 22 and today to 23 fails to connect to Z-stick and gives the following two error messages:

"Error starting Engen. Check that a Z-Stick is installed and functioning" and the program exits.

Sometimes the program continues to run, and pulling up the client terminal says "The program can't start because msncv100.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem."

I've tried the following troubleshoots:

-Uninstall version 20, reboot, reinstall version 23
-Uninstall Engen, uninstall driver for Z-Stick, reboot, reinstall driver, reboot, reinstall version 23
-Change Com Port for Z-stick
-Disable Windows essentials (no other security software running)

All get the same error running Engen.

Rolling back to version 20 (or prior) consistently fixes the issue, the z-stick is recognized quickly and works on prior builds.

Let me know if I can provided any more information, thanks as always for your help sorting this out.

Is it the older black Z Stick?  Or the newer white one?

I installed it without issue this evening when I posted it.  I'm also using Win10.

Did you try another USB port?  Is it in an internal port or a USB hub?

I can't find out anything about msncv100.dll.  Do you know what it is?

Did you try installing build 23 _without_ uninstalling the previous build?  I never uninstall an old build.

I'm not sure what the dll file is.

Yes, I've tried installing without uninstalling, same result unless I'm on build 20 or less.

Its possible it is a problem with my OS/system.

If so, why would the Z-stick driver fail after version 22+? Does this have to do with Python changes listed on build 21? What should I look for in my OS and local settings?

I will test more tomorrow. If all else fails I'll try the nuclear option this weekend and reinstall windows. That's a chore!

Which Z Stick is it?  White?

Don't reinstall Windows yet.  Let's see if we can find the cause.  It may be our problem.  Thanks very much for your patience.

Also, I know you considered it, but this is the kind of thing that is consistent with an antivirus problem.

Which Z Stick is it?  White?

Sorry, I overlooked this last night. It's the white Gen 5 Aeon Z Stick. I think that's the most recent one.

I will also continue to test with Windows Defender disabled.

We think we found the problem.  Hopefully it will be fixed today.

Please try the "check for updates.." menu option and see if the new build 1.0.24 works better.  Turns out an update to our program which produces a Windows executable may have introduced a need for an extra set of DLL's.  I reverted back to the previous version for build 24.  Thanks!

Great news. Ok, I will test this evening. Do I use the Beta channel?

Also, to answer previous question I tested both usb hub and internal port. Both failed on versions 22/23.

Yes, the beta channel.  Or, just download from here:

It works!!!!!  ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Installed build 24, Z-stick found and everything runs as expected (service, buttons, command line +).

Thank you for the detective work, glad to be back on the current builds.
