You don't need to upgrade, but if you do want to, we offer a special price at the beginning of each cycle.  You just missed it.  Maybe you missed the three e-mails we sent about it.  Sorry.

This explains our development and has a little about pricing.

It's not twice a year.  It's once a year. "Huge Price"?  You're wildly exaggerating.  MC is probably the best value in media library and player software in the industry.  What other software has so many features, does SO many different things , and lets you install on as many of your own machines as you want for ONE license cost?

I shouldn't smile, but I couldn't help it :)

The feelings of mrdanz are obviously very real to him.

It is a case of 'some you win, some you lose'. Way back, when I first started using MC I paid twice. It's sore the first time if you've missed the watershed, but after that, there's a major upgrade roughly once a year, and that's it.

JRiver are also much better now at communicating these things, giving everybody the best possible chance to catch any 'early bird' prices.

I also can't help wondering why, if mrdanz upgraded last week, are he is feeling the need to upgrade again this week? That part of his protest doesn't seem right and has me wondering if perhaps something has got lost in translation somewhere. Is that a possibility?

It's funny, pre-Master license I paid three times (Windows, Mac and Linux) a year for two years straight. And it was worth every penny!

For the price of one dinner. I get a year of a team of people contributing to software I use.
Value is not even the right word.

The last thing anyone wants to read after a complaint like that by the OP is fan mail. Whatever you may feel about the yearly upgrades, it does look as if in many ways MC is moving towards a subscription model without calling it such.

In the thirteen years I've been using this software, the generous licensing model hasn't really changed at all, so no, nothing is moving. You don't have to upgrade if you don't want to, and your purchased version will not expire.

The discounted prices, and their expiry dates were communicated via email, and, as you say, yearly, not twice a year. Though that time span is not set in stone, it's around about yearly. Subscriptions expire when you stop paying. The version of media center you buy does not expire. Upgrades are not compulsory.

These are facts, not fan mail.

There's no subscriptions. If you're happy with a specific version (e.g. 20 or 21), you can stick with it as long as you want - you can never upgrade major versions if you don't want to. There's no requirement that says you have to upgrade to the next major version.
