Media Center 22.0.34 Crash (Same crash in MC 20)
« on: October 31, 2016, 08:33:33 pm »

I've had MC running flawlessly for years but recently my MC 20 install started crashing regularily out of nowhere, both on my office pc and at my living room NUC.
Basically after any random amount of time, either idling or with activity, MC would crash, 100% of the time.

I then upgraded to 22 to see if that fixes things, but apparently I get the same problems there, so I suspect it might be related to my library.
I've tried a complete reinstall and restore from backup, same problems.

Log attached.

What video hardware do you have?

Any antivirus software?

Display: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1070 (driver 21.21.13.7570) on the MC Library pc in the office.
It also crashes on the living room NUC which uses an integrated chip.

Stock Windows Defender (Win 10) for antivirus, I'll disable it and see if it helps.

Edit: Disabling antivirus didn't help

The last few lines of the log talk about getting cover art for this file:
0307594: 11828: Import: GetCoverArt: Getting art: I:\Music\Albums\Johann Sebastian Bach\Partita No. 2, D-moll for solo Violin\01. Allemanda.mp3
0307594: 11828: General: CGetCoverArtWorker::GetAudioImage: Start

I'm not sure why getting cover art would cause a crash, but maybe?  Try moving that file to a location where MC can't see it.  Then try again.

Brian.

Perhaps a corrupt image?

All cover images was nuked during the reinstall I believe, and I've also tried turning off most advanced option for auto-import, still crashing.

Is there no help in the attached crash dump?
Going a week without MC when you're used to using it for everything is not too much fun - I guess I'll have to rebuild the entire library if there's no resolution, and then I'll lose tons of metadata  :-[

Brian commented on the cover art lines in the log.
If you don't have separate cover art for that file, move the file itself out of the way temporarily, delete it from MC and try again. It's possible that the image in the file tag is corrupted.
Also, do you have a library backup from before the crashing started? MC generates lots of library backup history.

I removed a bunch of files, things worked for a while, now it's constantly crashing yet again.
No errors on the drives, and this is getting extremely frustrating.

For testing purposes, can you make a backup of your library (off of the machine to be safe),
Restore that backup to make sure that it can be restored.
Then clear the library and re-import your media?

The idea is to isolate the issue between library corruption vs corrupted files.

Cleared the library, setup the same import rules and re-imported everything and things seems to be stable now.
Sounds like a library corruption issue then?

Re-imported the old library again to see if it will start crashing again.

If you prove it's the library (by re-importing) would you mind emailing it to me?

The other possibility would be a settings issue (if you didn't restore settings when you restored the library).

Thanks.
