Hi a function I use a lot has "vanished"

I have a USB external drive connected to my PC (USB 3.0).  I often "send" a playlist here and use it in my car or in other places
away from my media library.

Under Drives and Devices I have "Explorer"
Opening Explorer allows me to see local drives on my PC as well as above connected USB drive.
No problem there.

Now under a playlist :
I choose a playlist
I Right click ion the playlist name
I choose "Send to"
I choose Drives and Devices and all I have is "Burner"
I have no CD ROM on this PC, I have no DVD Drive, I have no Burner.
I cannot see my external USB drive, explorer is no longer available.

This issue also manifests itself on version 21 (21.0.90)  I have on another computer.
This was an issue in early 21 builds that was resolved, seems its back in later 21 builds and in 22.

Thank you for your assistance

Regards  Mike

burner and one of my 16gig flash drives show up

none of my other drives show up, and none of my (7-each) 128 gig flash drives shows up.

It seems it is size related.  I used a 15GB SD card in a SD card reader and that was seen perfectly.  So I have burner and this SD card.
My USB drives are over 100 Gb is size, and none of them are displayed by JRiver.

I updated the J River 22.0.48, the issue still persists.

Try Windows Explorer.  Does that work?

Hi Jim, re windows explorer, not 100% what you mean.
1) Under Windows 10, File explorer sees all my removable drives regardless of size, SD cards, USB Drives etc  Allows browsing of all folders and files.
2) In J River Under Drives and Devices I have explorer.  Here I can also browse all my removable drives regardless of size, SD Cards, USB Drives etc.  Allows browsing of all folders and files.
3) J River "Send To" "Drives and Devices" only allows me to "see", send to, the 15Gb SD card none of the larger devices.

Thanks

My Point 1) in my reply to Jim mentions that Windows file explorer sees the drives.  But to copy all songs on a playlist manually to a USB or other external drive using Windows file explorer is not really convenient or a solution.  if that is what the answer is suggesting.

I don't think Jim was asking you to use Windows File Explorer. Rather he was asking whether the disks show up there, so that they can gauge whether it is an MC problem or not, rather than a fault disk for example.

I see that this issue report is marked as "logged",  does this mean it has been logged for resolution or investigation?

How does one know if a reported issue is being investigated, will be fixed, there is a timeline for addressing and resolving issues, or that there is no intention of addressing it at all?

Thank You

I don't know what you mean that it has been logged.

We don't have a formal bug tracking system.  It would be difficult to explain how we work but you could read a few posts to get an idea.

Hi Jim

On the bottom right hand corner of my post there is the word "logged".  I presume it meant my issue was logged.  It may mean my IP was logged.

I have been on this forum for a few years now as a JRiver paid up supporter and I have no idea of the workflow used by your team to resolve reported bugs.

It would be nice to understand.

We fix problems that are not unique.  In other words, several or more people see them.

We don't spend much time on problems that only one person sees.

If you see a problem that can be reproduced, post it in the thread that announces the latest build.  Try the build first to make sure it isn't fixed.

Hi Jim

Thank you, I am not trying to be difficult, I own a small IT company, not in media but in the ERP space so our business model is different to yours so I have a good feel for customer support and expectations.  When I report something here I feel lost, as if its pot luck if it gets addressed or not.

But yes what I reported is easily duplicated and others here have confirmed the issue.

I will check build 55 although the accompanying narrative re this build posted on this board does not list my issue as being addressed.

Thank you for taking the time to engage.

Could you start Media Center, wait for handhelds to appear, then grab the log (after enabling logging in the previous run)?

Then just send it to matt at jriver dot com.  Or post it here.

Thanks.

I'm on latest MC version. I tried to do some investigative work on this but the results were inconclusive. I tried with both a 2GB and 16GB USB stick. Formatted as FAT32 and NTFS.

1) I plugged in a 2GB flash drive and it was shown under "Drives & Devices>Explorer>myUSBdevice" in this case the USB was not shown/listed when I went to "Send To>Drives & Devices" (only Burner was listed. And this computer doesn't have a  burner or CD/DVD drive). Note: The clue here is that I had to go into Drives & Devices>Explorer to see it.

2) I formatted the USB to NTFS and tried again. This time is shows up directly under "Drives & Devices" (I did not need to look for it with Explorer). Now it was shown/listed under "Send To>Drives & Devices".

3) I formatted back to FAT32 and tried again. This time it shows up again directly under "Drives & Devices" as it should. And again I can see it at "Send To>Drives & Devices".

So the size of the USB doesn't seem to be an issue and the file system used doesn't seem to matter.

I was not able to repeat what happened in Test 1. Every other test I tried had the USB show up directly under Drives & Devices.

Hi Matt

It size related put in a large drive ie 128Gb, 200Gb and it will not appear.  Small sizes do, I have tested 32Gb as well and can see it, have not tested 64Gb as I dont have one.  Other members have confirmed that as well on this thread, smaller sizes no problem, larger sizes are the issue.

Windows 10 picks up all sizes on same machine

Thanks

I believe you, I just have no idea where in our code there's a size gate.  I wouldn't expect one honestly.

That's why I'm hoping for a log.  Any chance?

Thanks.

Well we do have a cap at 300 GB.  I think it's because hard drives once in a while show up as a handheld otherwise.

Not sure what to do about it.

No problem using a 64GB USB.

But as I mentioned in my previous response, I did see the issue (one time) using a 2GB stick. So I don't think it is going to turn out to be size related.

Maybe it's more related to the computer's OS than JRiver program. What are you guys running for OS (is everybody on Win10 x64, or ?).

Random suggestion, seeing as we seem to be clutching at straws a little:
What filesystem format is your external USB?

I'm wondering if it doesn't like the filesystem/ possibly a combination of size & filesystem, rather than the drive itself?

I would imagine Windows 10 Pro 64 is pretty common place.  It is the operating system of choice for most PC vendors currently.  Buy a new Windows PC or notebook and you don't have much choice re the operating system nowadays.  I would presume JRiver tech would have a Windows 10 PC as a test bed for their software?

As I said earlier in this thread I own a small software company and we have all of the supported current Microsoft operating systems running so we can assess if an issue is Windows operating system specific.  Windows 10, Windows 7, Server 2012, Server 2008 etc.

Maybe I should install JRiver on the Windows 7 64 bit machine and see if the issue persists. Although I would have thought it is something JRiver would have done as part of the normal course already and would be able to comment if its operating system dependent or not?

Excuse me I dont mean to show my frustration.

We develop on Win10 64 bit.  We test on a lot of different OS's, most often when someone has a problem.

Any chance you could format a thumbdrive as NTFS and see if it shows up? That would really narrow it down for the team.

To Country Bumpkin, as per earlier in this thread, the issue is size dependent. 32Gb works, 64Gb works, 128Gb does not, 200Gb does not on 500Gb etc.

All are picked up without issue by Windows 10.

I installed JRiver 22 on Windows 7 64 Bit Enterprise edition, I have the same issue there.  I am pretty sure its a JRiver issue and not Microsoft operating system related.

I have in the interim bought a lifetime licence on another player, I updated that player to my library, it sees JRiver play lists.  It sees all my USB and CF drives regardless of capacity.  So I have updated my drives with that as I have a long work related road trip starting tomorrow morning.

This now begs the question why do I need both if all I want is to play media, one product has issues with external devices, the other does not.  Both support lossless audio, Wasapi, Asio etc etc. Both are supposed to play bit perfect?

I am pretty sure its a JRiver issue and not Microsoft operating system related.

I don't doubt that problem is "internal" to the MC program. I'm just trying to provide more troubleshooting info. It could be related to the OS where some change was made by Microsoft between Win7/8 and Win10 which is not accounted for in the MC program.

I don't have a USB drive larger than 64GB, so there's nothing more I can do or test.

Hi to Jim and Country Bumkin.

All the drives show up under Windows 7 explorer and under windows 10 file explorer regardless of the size.  They do not show up though under J River drives and devices under either Windows 7 or Windows 10. I have tested using several  sizes of device and installed JRiver on two operating systems in order to troubleshoot.  So under Windows file explorers they are all visible and accessible regardless of size under JRiver "send to drives and devices" not.  So humbly and with respect how can it be solely a Microsoft issue in this case?

Other users here on this forum have confirmed the same.

if I may suggest, I am the customer and not a JRiver Software QA employee, if it appears from posts by users on this forum that it may be a JRiver and operating system incompatibility so should JRiver not be troubleshooting and as a first step getting their hands on a larger drive to facilitate the process?  And as part of the process keeping their customer in the loop as to what the status of the issue is and what the JRiver plans are to resolve?

I think i figured it out tell me if I am wrong.

the only devices that are listed in MC under Drives and devices are removable media devices (At least mine).

some thumb drives (sandsk drives to name one made around 2012-2014) report they are not removable media (and mine are like that)

Quote
NOTE: SanDisk is beginning production of flash drives configured as fixed disk in 2012 to meet new requirements for Windows 8 Certification.

Historically, flash drives have been configured as removable disks and Windows Explorer displays them as ‘Removable Media’. Windows 8 Certification requires flash drive manufacturers to configure flash drives as fixed disks. Flash drives configured as fixed disk will show up in Windows Explorer as ‘Hard Disk Drives’. Flash drives configured as fixed disks still function the same as those configured as removable disks.

Any Ideas, Answers?

Can you open the drive's properties (right click on drive in Windows File Explorer, then Hardware tab, Properties). Do you see a button called "Change Settings"?
If yes, under "Policies" see if you can change the "Removal Policy" to Quick Removal? If it is already set for Quick Removal - then I have no other ideas.
Good luck.

FYI I just tested my new 128GB flash drive (I Got Today) that reports in windows it is removable media, and shows up in MC.

My older SanDisk 128GB flash drives do not show up in windows as removable and also do not show up in MC under Drives and Devices.

So it would seem to me:

Old SanDisk flash drives and other flash dives that do not show up in windows as removable will not show up in MC under Drives and Devices.

Hi All

So tesing this further following on from above:

So the issue is if type shows up as : Local Disk under Windows then we have our problems, we want the type to be displayed as removable Device under Windows?
The other Windows properties of my 500Gb removable drive which I am using as a sample now
Type: Disk Drive
Location: On USB Mass storage Device (Note the normal "fixed" drives show location as Bus Number XX)
Policies: Quick Removal
Driver: External USB Device
Class: Disk Drive

I presume the type must show as Removable Drive.

My Summary:
This issue occurs using JRiver 22 on Windows 7 and 10 <I dont have 8>
This issue seems to have become an issue on JRiver 21 <cannot tell you release number> as I have this very drive and another with JRiver play lists created by JRiver using the "Send to Drives and Devices" function.

My current work around is using a competing product that sees all drives as removable regardless of the type Windows displays, I presume as long as the policy is Quick Removal and or the driver is shown as External USB device under Windows?

To Fix:
1) Replace all removable devices?  I dont think so, that would be a very "Apple" like solution and we are not "Apple" here
2) JRiver to make the change, it should not be a difficult fix as they have the code, it worked previously

Thank you to the MCBeta team, not sure how MCBeta team fits in though, are they part of the JRiver team?

Now hope for the fix.
