Are subgenre available?
« on: December 24, 2016, 05:25:44 am »

Hi

I am migrating from Windows Media Centre/WM Player to JRiver MediaCenter. I really like the extra control JRiver provides in creating smart playlists. One area I have run into problems migrating across is the subgenre field. I can tag .wma music files and create playlists on the subgenre field in Windows Media Player but I cannot find a subgenre field in JRiver.

Is the subgenre field available in a setting somewhere? I use subgenre extensively in my playlists so hoping there is a way round this.

You can add a custom tag in the options.  It's under "Library".

Then you can add it to any view displayed by right clicking on the title bar.

Thanks  :) , I have managed to create a field called subgenra, same attributes as the genra field. However, if I select a .wma track go to update library from tags the subgenra field is not filled in. Is it possible to read the subgenra information from the .wma files?

If it is a real tag and it is stored in the file, then the answer is yes.

The tag name must match exactly, including case.

You could probably learn more about that tag by searching on Google.

Got it to work, had to view a .wma file in Notepad and look for a known subgenre (correct spelling this time).

The field is called WM/ContentGroupDescription, used that in JRiver with display name of Subgenre and update library from tag is now working.

Very happy, now just got to recreate all my dynamic play lists.

It would also be helpful if we could separate genres with commas. That is ... "Blues,Rock" would show up under both genres...

Use a semicolon, ie. "Blues;Rock". Its what all our list files use which allow multiple values.

is any = "exact match"
contains = fuzzy match

genre is any "Rock"
genre contains roc
