Reminder to Users - check and clear the Log occassionally
« on: February 15, 2017, 08:16:23 am »

I had a warning on my laptop today the "C:" drive was full. It's a 60GB SSD, just running the OS with MS Office, and JRiver.
I thought that odd since all my media and recordings go to drive D:

After searching through the C: folders I found the "Users\...AppData\Roaming\JRiver\Media Center 22" was the culprit.

The "Log.txt file" in the Media Center 22 folder had grown to 36GB!

So I thought I'd pass this along to other Users - "check and clear your Log file occasionally (at Help>Logging)".

I think it's better to keep logging turned off unless you're troubleshooting.

Also worth checking the conversion cache too (if you have that enabled) if you notice your hard drive to be filling up.

I keep logs ON all the time on my server. Would not even consider leaving them off. Crashes happen. If you want to understand why a crash happens, logs are a necessity.

I might be wrong but, I thought the logs get reset when installing version updates?

New feature request- add an option to auto clear the logs every X number of days/weeks/months...

More precisely, they rotate when MC is restarted, which would obviously happen when you install an update =)

Explain "rotate"? You mean all the contents in the log file gets deleted and the file size goes back to zero?

Rotate means that the current log becomes the previous log, and the previous log is deleted.

So the OP's 36GB log file  ? That would (im)possibly mean that his MC has not crashed or restarted or been updated in a super long time!

I was on .71 when this my "drive is full" message came up. So however long 71 has been out is the time it took the log to grow. Also, I had TV logging set to verbosity 1.

I once suggested leaving verbosity level to 1 for beta testers.  Perhaps I should revise that to leaving it to 0 unless trouble shouting something specific.
