TV->Optical->OpticalToUSBAdapter->HTPC with MC

Is it possible to route audio from TV to HTPC using an Optical to USB Adapter (TV->Optical->OpticalToUSBAdapter->HTPC with MC)?

If yes - is a special driver required?
What other configuration is required?
Is a different zone required?
Any recommendations for such an Optical to USB Adapter?

I have a mini ITX mainboard with GTX960. So no pcie solution is possible.

I do this using a Creative Soundblaster E5 USB soundcard that has an optical input and utilising JRiver's Open Live ---> ASIO Line-In functionality.
