Media Center 9.1.214 beta available
« on: July 14, 2003, 02:15:19 pm »

Please read VERY carefully. This is a BETA version of 9.1.  If you expect things to work, please download the latest 9.0 build from this thread:

http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=MediaCenter;action=di splay;num=1054751628

but if you're patient and willing to help us work out some of the bugs, you can download 9.1 here (recommended for experts only):

ftp://ftp.jriver.com/pub/downloads/music/MediaCenter91214.exe

(backup your library before installing)

Please report any 9.1 problems in this thread.  Keep a list of problems and if they aren't fixed in the next build, please post the list again.

History:

1. Fixed: Tooltips would sometimes show up in areas where they shouldn't.
2. Fixed: Irman remote control plugin was sending duplicate command sequences.
3. NEW: Added "Clear" button to remote control options dialog.
4. Changed: Added Pg Up / Pg Down to list of remote control commands.
5. Changed: Create / Select playlist dialog starts with "Name" focused instead of "Path".
6. Fixed: "Acquire Images" could crash in some cases.
7. Changed: Toolbar icons now 16x16 (instead of 20x20).
8. Changed: Windows Media is now default encoder.
9. Changed: Added Windows Media re-distributable to installation package.
10. NEW: CD data burning has added capability for renaming destination files (and folders) on the CD, either custom or by template.
11. NEW: Filenames burned on CD can have their list order prefixed to their name so they play in the intended order.
12. Fixed: Silent aquisition of licenses, for wma files, did not work.
13. NEW: WMA plug-in displays status messages during license acquisition.
14. NEW: Drag and drop implemented for "virtual" data folders in the CD burning queue.
15. Changed: Toolbar inactive images built on the fly using a skin specified "blend" color. (instead of using a stored bitmap)
16. Fixed: MC would try the same file multiple times on a critical failure in continuous mode.
17. Fixed: "Quick Play" menu was not working.

This:
9. Changed: Added Windows Media re-distributable to installation package.

:(

Of course this is even worse (IMHO):
8. Changed: Windows Media is now default encoder.

9. Changed: Added Windows Media re-distributable to installation package.

It is a tradeoff between usability and download size, and we think usability is the right choice.  We wish there was a better answer.

Expecting users to download an additional 4 MB stub if they try to play a video or WMA file isn't acceptable.

In the future, we may issue smaller "upgrade" versions.

The art skinning system changed a bit.  Try changing to one of the included skins.  Other skins will need to be updated by their authors.

Thanks and sorry for the hassles.

Gday

That was the first thing I did...I've tried all the included skins - all the same.

BTW I installed over the top of an older version (2.1.211 I think), however I tried uninstalling COMPLETELY and re-installing 2.1.214, and I still get the same problem...

I am having the same problem. I am using the pixos skin and also tried the Z skin but MC does not seem to
be responding since the restart after that change.

I do not get this problem with any skins I have installed. This includes the included skins, ones I've made myself, and the "Golden" skin beta6 by ToMy00.

What am I doing differently to avoid this issue?

Hmmm...just installed it, and I find that all the icons for buttons (tree view, play etc, back forward etc etc) show as small black boxes...

I do not either get this problem with any of the skins (Win2K). I guess it's not a problem with the skins (main.xml or bitmaps) because build 214 seems to use only the "SmallIcons.bmp" from the "...\Data\Default Art" folder to display all toolbar buttons and right now just ignores the toolbar button images in the skin folders and the "main.xml" entries belonging to them. It even seems to use a default value for the "blend color" if the entry is missing.

So every skin should work like before, only the colors of the "inactive" buttons may look different...the only thing skinners have to do is: poke around to find the right color for the "Colors InactiveBlend" entry. The toolbar images in the skins folder and the entries for "ActiveImage", "InactiveImage", "ActiveImageSmall" and "InactiveImageSmall" can be deleted.

Some notes:

I think it's a good idea to tidy up the toolbars and to have only one image instead of three (respectively five with the two "inactive" versions). But I think it would be much easier to create an "inactive" version that goes perfectly with the skin by creating it with Photoshop or something like that. Finding the right "blend" color will be almost impossible for some skins. The reason is the unequal behaviour of colors when they get "greyed out" (or maybe get "blued out" or "yellowed out" in this case). If you have a single "inactive" version, you can correct the contrast - with a simple "blend" color you will always get a compromise only. This compromise will not look very professional sometimes...
Altogether, the "blend mechanism" is a step behind the previous possibilities for making skins with a well-balanced look.

Now that the toolbar buttons are 16x16 (like Windows standard...), it maybe a good time to adapt the drawing of the toolbars themselves and the separators to a fitting value. Now MC draws them 21 pixel high (for 8 pixel fonts...), and that always gives a sloping look ... Please draw the toolbars 22 pixel high (like Windows does...) and the separators 18 (like Windows separators for buttons) or 20 or maybe even 22 pixel high. This will make it even possible to place the toolbar text in the *middle* of the toolbars...it hangs down a little bit now.

Just installed MC 9.1.214 on an XP Pro SP1 machine running P4 2.8GHz, 1GB Corsair Twinx DDRAM. Problem with Icons reported by LunchmeatVoom not seen. BUT, when I also installed on Win2K SP4 machine (PIII/600MHz, 512 RAM) saw the Icon problem. The Win2K machine only setup to run MC9 as my music server. Also, using the default MC9 skin on both machines.  Guess Matt needs to figure out what's going wrong and fix it.

Is it safe yet to remove WMA encoders and WMP itself? There isn't a need for these with direct show filters or whatever you guys are directing through now, is there? Especially when the SOB's try and connect to the Internet as soon as they are installed.

Series 9 means nothing to me and I'd just as soon leave it at the servers of J River, thank you. Bad choice. Let 'em download that 4MB crap if they need it. I don't.

1)Dragging the scroll bar in the options menu changes the appearance of the scroll bar from MC skin style to the default windows style and back, making scrolling very jerky.

2)When one uses ASIO for streaming web content, switching stations causes stuttering and occasionally crashes.  This bug has been there forever!

3)Double-clicking on empty space in Hairstyle doesn't switch you bakc to MEGA-ME anymore.

4)MC does not remember 4 channel output selection for Direct Sound.  It switches back to 2 channels.

5) I still think you should be able to hear MC fast forwarding while you hold the 'fast forward' button like every other player; same for  the rewind button.

Well, all of the toolbar text freaks (I say that in a loving way. :) ) will be happy to see that the text labels option is back... but what happened to the selective text option?!? I don't want text for all of my buttons, but I do want it on some! :P

The Locate menu needs some work. It's a big unsorted mess of locations.

Locate into a view scheme should select the option that filters out all of the stuff doesn't fit alongside the file(s) we pick inside that view scheme. For instance, if I choose to Locate Metallica - One inside of the Artists view scheme, I'd like to see only Metallica songs, not songs by everybody else as well.

Media Library is still really slow when displaying video thumbnails. I mean MC is just reduced to a crawl until I click somewhere else.

Minor bug introduced a few releases ago  (sorry not sure which)

If MC is started Minimized and the 'Minimize to system Tray' optionm is selected - First MC appears in the system Tray, and then it also appears in ther Task Bar.

If you normalise and then re-iconise, the task bar item goes away, so things are corrected.

Matt

Thanks for fixing Quick Play :)

I want to say, I personally approve of the change to including WMP redist in the installer. Well, sort of.

Until now, I've kept an old copy of the installer on my PC in case I need to do a reinstall. So I'd install 9.0.112 (I think) then install 9.1.213 over it. I download the files over my work's broadband, burn to CDRW, take home and install. So it doesn't bother me that the files are now 50% bigger, but it would bother me if I had to download 4MB 'on demand' over my home dial-up.

What would be best though is to have two separate installers. One for the core application, and one that incorporates any other stuff that may be needed on-demand. That's so you can download the 4MB just once, on any PC you choose.

I also have no icons :(

Cant post any other bugs as I cant even use MC properly.

And one point - does this mean that ALL old skins will no longer work unless updated??

It seems a shame to be causing older skins to not work as MC already has few enough :(

Matt - when u wake up - could u fix this icon problem first and release another build with it fixed before tonights official (unofficial) beta release so that we can test it today? The lack of icons means this build is unuseable.

Can the CD Writer 'File Naming' and 'Folder Naming' PLEASE be given the same little menu thing that there is in 'File naming and Location' in the 'Options' Menu to allow you to insert fields.

Can this also be given to Fields/Add/Calculated and ALL other places where we are expected to enter strings of the field names. Expecting users to remember all field names is a bit un-realistic and makes it very hard, even for someone who's been using it for years like me.

Also, the right click menu on the CD-Burning screen is way way too complex and even lost me.
I right clicked looking for the new re-name options and had the HUGE MC menu there.

Options like sending files in the cd writer playlist to the cd-writer again make no sense.

Burning a CD is also NOT the place to be tagging files or filling in the files properties, or renaming the files(on the hard drive) from the properties.

Could this menu please be reduced greatly to a small menu relivant purely to burning including the options that are in the 'options' menu.

The CD Burning right click menu should be something like this (in my opinion):

---------------------------
Play (to allow them to quickly see what song they have qued)
Play > (menu)
---------------------------
Edit Selected Item
Edit >
Properties

Right now the menu is just way too overwhelming and unrelated to the task in hand.

Anyone else agree/disagree?

Hey Matt,

Could you tell me how mjextman TREEPATH now works in this beta. I used to use it to play a custom created field (Index) that has a number for each album. I could then use my Pronto to play any album by number (Brad's idea!)

Could you also PLEEASE add some keyboard shortcuts for RIGHT-CLICK/PLAY and RIGHT-CLICK/ADD TO PLAYING NOW. The enter key is fine for playing an entire filter of songs, but I'm sure lots of people just browse through music and add specific songs to playing now. While I appriciate the new IRMAN custom options, I would still prefer to use girder and keyboard shortcuts for these two command would make it possible.

And finally...The tab key should really tab into the filelist as well as the tree and pane windows. Alternatively, maybe Ctrl+1 Crtl+2 Crtl+3 could jump to these windows.

Regards

Vic

Change Request

When using the panes, if you click on artist then album and then click back to artist all it should find the whole album, not reset.

Eg,

Artist - Amanda Marshall
Album - Much More Music.

What dispays is 1 song, If I click back on Artist All, it should find all songs from that album regardless of artist

I've moved Raistlin's post on including the Windows Media package, and I'm cleaning the similar comments out of this thread.  Please continue the discussion here:

...I find that all the icons for buttons (tree view, play etc, back forward etc etc) show as small black boxes...

I can duplicate this with the old Z skin, but not with the new PixOS skin.

Why does it seem more is done to add or change options which effect appearance or simply how something is done,
than what is done to remove bugs and increase usability?

panes or no panes, tree or no tree, does the tree show or just the panes, is something included in the installer or not . ..  etc, etc, etc.

Perhaps instead of arrainging the deck chairs, the ship should be prevented from sinking?
Bug are reported and left unrepaired while appearance and interface changes abound, heck even 9.0.180 still has bugs (which are reported in reviews on MC9 and thus affect sales) yet the progress goes on in the other areas.

Is this indeed a wise approach?
Or am I just burning out on Beta testing?

You folks do great work, but perhaps you should examine your focus.

Black boxes with all MegaMe skins (including PixOS) here running W2K SP4. Tried with 24bit and 16bit color depth, same effect. Please fix!
Thanks. Pietro.

Vertical Scrollbars Missing
« Reply #33 on: July 15, 2003, 06:50:01 am »

Vertical scrollbars in the selection panes are still missing. They have been missing for the last five or so betas. This problem exists on two different computers I have tested.

After downloading the larger MC9 with WM, and installing MC9 my dedicated music server now trys to access the internet.

How do I remove Microsoft's spyware?

Thanks.

- Adding all mp3 files to Playing now, playing for instance #100, exiting MC and starting again, the currently playing file is not in focus of main pane. You have to scroll up to see currently playing file.

- IF Playback filter is set to skip a smartlist (let's say rating=1,2) AND you change the smartlist to rating=1 THEN you have to restart MC for the changes to be active. Alternatively you remove all filtering and add it again.

- MC re-tags track number AGAIN! For new-comers, this means that you have the track format 0x before you import the mp3:s, after import, MC have tagged them x. Happens on random (could be earlier version of MC 9.1 as well)
