Canon raw (.crw) file viewing
« on: June 30, 2017, 09:07:14 am »

Quick question. I have a large number of .crw (Canon raw image files) that my initial scan decided were "bad" and now are continually skipped in any import.

How can I get MC to 1. Stop skipping them as bad and 2. Allow me to view them. (btw they arent bad as I can read them with Windows Photos app)

.crw files are mentioned in the Tools > Options > File Types but I cant get to view them...

Thanks

is MC set to open the .crw files? if not try that, once MC gets it, you can change them back to your default

if you can open them with windows paint then choose save as.... and change them to....

MC wont open the .CRW files. If I use the "Open Media File" option and browse to one, I get  a warning triangle and the message "There is nothing to play".

In tools > options > file types I see the attached file which specifically mentions crw files under RAW Image.

If I associate MC with the file type, MC will start if not already open but nothing happens.

I think I need to add a new file type, or does the fact it states crw (lower case) but my files are all CRW (upper case)?

Oh I think you need to check.. tools>options>general>features> then look for image support> and make sure it's checked. you may have to close MC and wait a half min and then restart if that option had not been checked.

lower case upper case should not matter....

EDIT: tho I think it is already checked since you have the option of seeing those file types

give this a shot...it won't over write original file as long as you choose "save as"

My experience- CRW thumbnails work in Win10 file explorer and you can use Photo Viewer to open CRW, but JRiver (and mspaint) cannot open them at all. Generally you want use the Canon software (or other) to process the CRW then export as jpg and put those in a JRiver library location.

Be careful if you are considering just renaming them - make copies of the original CRW's or you will loose all power/benefit of having the raw file.

Ok, thanks guys. Looks like the answer is just to "develop" them and save them as jpegs. I have Lightroom that can do that for me but it will take a while.

Interestingly, I now have a Sony camera that also shoots in a raw format (.arw) and MC reads them without a problem!

MC developers please note - there is a capability missing here!

Can you make a file available for download?  We might be able to fix the problem.

It might be worth trying to rename a file as .raw

Renaming CRW to RAW does not help- MC still will not import. And again, renaming them should not be considered a good solution since you loose all the benefit of shooting raw photos. Processing with appropriate software to jpg is the best way to go.

note: Having same issue with Panasonic RW2 files. Windows 10 behaves slightly different with RW2 files- no thumbnail and no viewing in Photo Viewer.

I have tried the change of file type to .raw - error message from MC22 saying no audio!

Here is an example file - its a Canon raw file so should be in common usage

Interesting that Google Drive has no problem viewing either of the file types linked to in the previous posts.....

The other thing to consider about raw photo viewing in MC: I think just viewing a raw photo in non-image editing software, like MC or windows explorer or windows photo viewer, I'm pretty sure what you are actually seeing is a low quality / low resolution jpg embedded in the raw file.

I don't believe that's the case.

.crw files? Like way old .crw and not the later .cr2? If Matt's using the library I think he is then it might not support that.

Investigation underway.  Thanks for the file.  I can actually get our code to decode and show it, but for some reason it comes up as a TIFF and that doesn't work.

I think this should all be squared away in the next build of MC23.  Thanks again for the file.

Excellent, thanks

I didnt realise that Canon had moved on with their raw format from .crw. My files are from about ten years ago, but all the more valuable for that  :)

Thanks for making the effort.

I just downloaded a sample RW2 image and it displayed perfectly in MC.

If you've got some files that don't display, maybe you could email me (matt at jriver)?

Thanks.

Hey, Matt, while you're at it, could you take a look at Olympus ORF files too? They won't import in MC22.

Here's one for your convenience:
