Constant "failed to rip DVD"
« on: July 05, 2017, 03:24:11 pm »

Great day gents,

A constant "Failed to rip the disc" with MC23.
I've created a log-file, please find attached, for your records.

Fyi ripping the discs directly by using the 'red fox' interface works and the result is fine.
Just when using MC's interface to rip DVD's - a failure at everytime after some seconds.

Audio CD's rip's perfect.

Thanks for any clue or hint :-)

MC cannot handle copy protected DVD's on its own. Do you have AnyDVD running when you try to rip from MC?

Great day.
Thanks for your reaction.
Yes I've got Red Fox' AnyDVD.

When using the AnyDVD interface the rip is working and valid.

Any clue gents ?

Thanks in advance.

Use a program that rips your DVDs and removes the copy protection in the process.  If you can configure RedFox to do that, then that's the way to go.  Otherwise, MakeMKV works fantastically for this.  I've ripped many, many DVDs and BDs with MakeMKV and have pure DRM free files that can be played by almost any player, including MC.

Hi Brian,

Many thanks, i am using RedFox at this moment, like as i've possitively be using with WMC during many years.
I have it actively running.
But when tyring to rip from inside MC the rip failes.
When using the RedFox interface directly the process runs fine (by right click onto the fox and 'rip directly to drive'.

So guessing i've got some setting not right in order to have MC using RedFox program ?

RedFox is set to be activated as auto.

Thanks to all for the golden tip :-)

That should work. I just tried it, with MC22 though. Had AnyDVD running and used MC to rip the disk. Worked as expected.

Maybe something has changed in MC23. Can you play the physical disk from MC? Does that work?

It might depend on the disc.

If AnyDVD is installed and the version is up to date, that's all you can do.

MC23 wouldn't be any different than MC22.  We don't do anything special to read the disc.

I didn't think so. If he can play it, he should also be able to rip it.

Gents, could it be an speed thing ?
As i'm using a external USB3.0 drive. Maybe the drive doesn't speed-up fast enough ? A time-out thing in MC?
I've added a logfile within the initial post, can somebody have a look into it ?

-Audio Rip and direct play not any problem in MC.
-When ripping DVD or BR (.iso) a failure message after a couple of seconds, as also the request to delete the incomplete file.
-ALL inserted discs are playable.
-Ripped films, of earlier or directly started by AnyDVD's interface, are OK and playing.

Strange i have to aggree :-)

Thanks !

Can you see your external drive in the AnyDVD settings? It still sounds to me like the "on the fly decryption" doesn't kick in when MC reads the disc. This is why I asked you if you can play the physical disk from within MC.

I can't help you with the log file I am afraid.

Hi tls62dk,

-Yes i can see the drive station listed in AnyDVD - and AnyDVD will even copy the disc - when NOT using MC.
-MC even shows me the message of the new optical disc and what i like to do with this disc (play, rip,...)
-Even the meta data is been searched and showed.
-But when pushing 'rip' into MCs screen the failure pops-up after a couple of seconds.

I have reinstalled AnyDVD but 'my' issue remains.

I am sorry then, but all out of ideas. Maybe someone with MC23 can chime in.

What's even the point of using RedFox and MC to rip?  Doesn't that preserve the DRM that's on the disc?  Which is a bad thing.  Or are you ripping ISOs?  I think those are very inconvenient.  DVD menus are painful.

Why not use MakeMKV to rip the main title(s) from the disk and be done with it?  No menus, no DRM, no weird configuration.

Hi Brian,

AnyDVD wiki:
AnyDVD HD - to remove DRM, lock-outs, and UOPs on DVD films and additionally High Definition media, specifically Blu-ray Disc and HD DVD.

Not saying I can't look into another tool, but have used AnyDVD for 10th now without any issues.

Thanks for the hint and alternative.
I will surely have a look into this.
