Greetings:

About two weeks ago, I finally fired up my Linux server, that I put together for MC and for MC alone.

I currently have an Asus 2702i.. an All in one rig.The All in one rig is a windows server with MC and Madvr. Settings in Madvr rendering we have CPU and GPU que sizes. With this, I was able to  effectively watch movies over the
network from my Sony 4K tvs with no issues. The Asus 2702i is a Core i7 pc with 16 gig of memory.

My new rig,  which I built from grounds up has this pecs:

Core i7 CPU X 990 @3.47 Ghz x 12.

Geforce 9800 GX2 SLI mode. Firmware 340-102 with Nvidia prime installed.

Resolution Spec :2560X1600

A pair of SSD 850 EVo Pro Samsung  500 gig

8 TiB hard drives + 1 3 Tib WD drive and another 1TIB HGST drive.

The entire Ubuntu install is on the SSD drive with MC 23.025.

My audio and movies libraries are on four external Mediasonic Hardware RAID boxes.

I have attached these four RAID boxes to the new rig and all movies and audio files migrated with no issues after importing and running audio analysis as required.

First my concerns: The X server reports: Memory size for the GTX 9800 GX2  512 meg, total dedicated memory size 512 meg, but the card specs reads 2048 meg.
Should I be concerned with this discrepancy in memory size.

I also have  the wrong resolution  reported by the X server. which is 1920x1080. The resolution on the spec says 2560 x 1600.

Any concerns?

After watching a few Blu ray concerts and movies from my attached libraries over the network on Sony xbr 930D and a few xbr 850C 4K tvs, I noticed the audio breaks and video stops and continue almost every 2 minutes.

With this powerful quad GPUs .. GPU 0-3, and the 24 Gig of memory plus the Intel Core i7 X 990 cpu, I was expecting a smooth video playback.

This is the area I really need some help either to help me tweak the X server, or let MC come up with ways to adjust setting within the Video setup similar to ROHQ.

In Madvr's setting - rendering we have a way of adjusting the cpu and gpu que sizes. In Linux, I have not seen any way to do this.
On the X-server info, I saw Antialiasing settings:

Choice: Use Application Settings
            Override Application Settings.
             Enhance Application Settings.
 I also saw  "Enable FXAA"
                   Anisotropic Filtering.
I do not know what setting to use and if any of these settings will even improve video playback over the DLNA.
My requests if it is possible:
To find a way with the video setting in MC give us a way to adjust que sizes of gpu and cpu.
provide a method of methods to enable GPUs 1, 2, 3 ,4.
At the moment there is no way to adjust any video settings in this Linux versions similar to what we have on the Windows version.

Being new to the Linux platforms>

I ask these questions:

Where is Engen integration ?  Any time soon?

Where is Sat/IP TV interface.? I use OTA and Directv.

Can we have MilkDrop built in to the Linux distros to jazz up audio enjoyment?

Television support isn't available on Linux or Mac. In fact, I'm not sure it's really doable outside of the Windows platform (according to past posts here on the forums).

If I recall correctly the GeForce 9800 GX2 is a dual-GPU with 2x512MB of VRAM. And you're using two of these cards? That's quad-SLI as there's two GPUs on each card.

Even though you have 2GB of overall VRAM with all four GPUs, you still only have 512MB USABLE OVERALL VRAM since that's how much VRAM each GPU has. GPU VRAM doesn't scale or "add up" (e.g. 512MB + 512MB + 512MB + 512MB = 2GB) this way when using SLI or CrossFireX. An example being say you have two 8GB video cards in SLI which you'd think would equal 16GB of memory, right? No, it's not scaled like that so it's still only 8GB regardless of how many GPUs you have. I could get more technical, but that's the basic way of understanding it. So it's reporting the right amount of VRAM.

What Linux distro are you using? Have you instead of using the Nvidia proprietary drivers tried the open-source Nouveau drivers? Might work better for an older GPU like that.

I'm not going to lie, I've heard SLI on Linux can be a pain in the rear. Quad-SLI using two dual-GPU cards on Linux? Probably just asking for trouble. Honestly I'd replace them for a single card solution, like the GeForce GTX 1050 or even the 1060 (assuming you can find one thanks to the darn cryptocurrency mining craze).

If you are watching video on your Sony TV via the network, then the video card in your machine isn't being used for anything.  The TV is pulling the data over the network and rendering it in the TV's display.

I suspect that your network connection to the newly built PC is slower than the old one.  It's also possible that you are transcoding video from PC to TV and that this causes too much CPU utilization on the new PC.  Try looking at the CPU utilization on the PC while watching a movie on the Sony.

If you actually want to use your video card to do rendering, then you should connect the new PC's HDMI output to your TV directly.  Which almost certainly means that the PC needs to be close to the TV.

I have both Wired and wireless:
My wired is giga and wifi I get 867 mbps. The Asus Core i7 used same network.
This is what the Ubuntu and Windows systems reported.  I have a Netgear 8000 or so(The Night hawk router, it is reliable.

My point is under Madvr, the only way to get Asus- windows machine to play smooth is to adjust the cpu and gpu que. Through experimenting over years, in rendering, if the cpu slice is low and gpu slice is low, video will buffer. I set the GPU to 20 and CPU 22 or so, it has been like this for months and video plays very smooth, BUT if for any reason there is Buffering, we have come across this situations more than 3 times, the Windows malicious software removal tool may not have completed successfully, or if it completed, has screwed up the Wifi and Ethernet drivers, in this case, via Device manager, re scanned the drivers and or deleted offending drivers, then reboot to reload drivers. My Asus has been doing fine with no issues now for 4 months.

I forgot to mention this.
I have a Samsung UN JU 40 7100 4k tv connected to this new server via HDMI 2.  connected via HDMI, I tried and tested Belle via the network by  pressing on smart hub on the remote, then selected Contents, then "Belle" This lets me play over the network while the PC and TV are physically connected via HDMI. The Buffering still continues.
During the entire play, I was also watching the Netgear router and the Spectrum wired modem. I did not see any sign of network dropping signals. I have 100 dn/10 up plan. I know I have adequate network speed.
The only thing that plays nicely is audio with no problems.
Thanks
George.

I'm pretty confused about how your endpoints are connected to your server; are the TVs functioning as monitors for the server?  Or are you streaming via the network?    Maybe it would help to draw a connection/network diagram?

In the streaming case, the video cards are irrelevant (as noted above), it's just a function of CPU usage for transcoding (if necessary) and network usage for transmission.

If you're directly connected via HDMi than it's baffling that you're having problems.  The video output in MC for linux is more like red october standard than red october HQ, it can happily run on even very low-end systems.  For example I use MC for linux for video on an intel compute stick with integrated graphics, and have no issues with buffering or frame drops at 1080p.  My guess is that you almost certainly have an issue with your linux graphics configuration (or possibly your older video cards aren't well supported by the nvidia drivers anymore, they do drop support eventually).

It's hard to know because you're using kind of old components in your new system; I'm not sure what the minimum specs are for MC for Linux video. Your CPU launched 7 years ago, and the video cards are nearly 10 years old.  Graphics cards in particular have come a long way in the last ten years.  For example, I think based on benchmarks, the integrated graphics on a modern high end intel CPU will outperform one or both your video cards, and a single two-year-old midpriced nvidia card would outperform both your video cards almost three-to-one:

Your response needs replying to immediately.

My cpu is intel 990 X with 3.47 ghz SSE x 12, meaning 12 treads.
The GPU is the GTX 9800 GX2 with 2048 meg of memory. I have 2 on this new PC in SLI mode.
The current driver is 340.102 released by Nvidia February 2017. The first driver that was detected at 1st boot, first time was the Nvidia driver. I checked the Nvidia site to make sure the driver is current and appropriate.
All Nvidia cards have new drivers, I was surprise to find out Nvidia has updated the drivers on their cards so that they can play most new games.
Did I forget to state that the motherboard is Gigabyte G1 Assassins, an XL type Gaming motherboard.
I thought I was going to set my neighborhood on fire the first time I cranked it up.
Here is an aside:
first time, I powered it on, luckily I had opened the case and I noticed liquid dripping from the Corsair pump. I then quickly shut it off, took it to FrozenCpu.com.
The guy who opened the PC was shocked, when he saw that it had 2 GTX 9800 GX2 and more in shock when he saw it had G1 Assassin motherboard with 24 gig of memory. He stared at me, and asked me "What are you trying to do with this build and why did I build it? My response was I build it with anger, I have not built a PC in ten  years. He then smiled. Lucky we got a liquid cooling with longer pvc hose.
Enough of the specs.

On my Asus Windows server running  MC , 23.0xxx,  The AMD R9 gpu does not have much power compared to the Nvidia, yet buffering and audio issues were fixed by adjusting cpu and gpu ques in Madvr.

The PC is very quiet and the only software I have on this new PC is MC and it is going to have only MC.
PC via the cpu and gpu process the video one way or the other, when requests are made via the network, sends the info to the clients, in this case the Sony tvs, Samsung tvs etc.
My complain is not about the quality of the video, but the video and audio blending together.
In my first post regarding this issue, I asked if some one has experience configuring the Nvidia X server with the 340.102 driver. There are choices there. I wrote about Aliases etc. Someone with Nvidia knowledge, please help.

I think the card needs to be configured for it to work properly. I have not touched the setting, waiting for advice from forum members that are familiar with this type of hard ware.
Remember this is a Gaming mobo, designed for gaming, it should not have difficulty displaying 1080P videos over the network.
My network if not too slow, 100 down/10 up. and my wifi router is Netgear. The Asus has been set up for years and the 4 external libraries have been used to serve music and videos for almost three years on the Asus PC.
All tvs in the house connect to the Asus via the network wired. Only on rare occasion I actually would connect an HDMI to the server either to test and play with 3D offerings or just watch a new movie that is added to the library. Even Gizmo, Eos and JRemote can connect from anywhere to the Asus with no buffering 90%-95% of the time.
The point I am trying to clear up is this: During movie play back, there is buffering and that results in audio not being in syc with movie. Frames could be dropping when played over the network.
May be there is a memory leak some where, or something is broken in the chain. Something  needs to be tweaked for it to play nicely over DLNA.

Please investigate these issues. One of the fun in this hobby is to be able to watch movies and play audio on the go without issues, assuming there are no network problems.

Thanks.

George.
Thanks.

George
I did a few days ago audio analysis of audio on videos.
I have tried two ways of watching movies.
1: I have a Samsung 40 incher 4k attached directly to the new server. Within  Samsung there is a way to still use  the smart hub to get to the "Contents", then pick a movie or concert of choice.
My test early A.M today was "Belle". It buffered right from the beginning to the end almost every two minutes displaying loading. When this happens, audio is messed up, at times screen tears.
Is this software not designed to be played over a server or DLNA? if so, it should play smoothly.
It is not playing smoothly.
Test 2: Upstairs, after upgrading to 23.0.28, I tried to load up " Car Wash", Celine Dion.. A new Day has come, Bee Gees One night only, Lionel Richie Live in Paris, all exhibited Audio not insych probably due to buffering.
Don't you think the cpu and gpu still needs to prepare the info and send the info through the pipeline?
We need to investigate why audio is breaking real bad at the Sony end. The Sony tvs 3 of them are connected to AIWA surround Sound processor via toslink.
The Samsung here connected to the new server via HDMI.

Thanks for the explanation. You seem to be the only person as of yet that knows more about the card.
It used to be Nvidia's flagship card in those days. It got detected easily and the Nvidia prime listed all info on card... simple. My next build needs a newer card. I am waiting for new release of cards from Nvidia to complete the build. This will be a backup Ubuntu again.

I am using Ubuntu 1704.64 bit. I saw the open source listed, but the GTX 9800 GX2 driver was updated Feb 2017.
It looks like the open source driver.. nouveau is old. I tried it briefly for ten minutes, video it displayed was not impressive. In anyway I might try it again.

Really I have no issue with this driver except the buffering and audio not in syc with video.

There are a few settings I am not familiar with, because of this I just left everything As is in the config.
I thought  those gamers and Nvidia diehards on our forum will be able to guide me.

I am happy with the driver, picture is good, just needing a little tweaking similar to what we can do with Madvr on the video area.
Using a PC locally with an HDMI cable or rather watching a movie local via cable HDMI is not the same as watching same movie over the network, and not all tv makes handle this aspect the same. There are some movies, Samsung JU UN40, 65, 75 inch 7100 series can not load and play some movies over the network, but Sony Xbr 850C, 930D and maybe others will breeze through those movies.
I can testify to this, because I have both types of TV used via the network at home.
Also, Samsung can only play 3D local via HDMI, and it plays 3D movies so sharp, but you ask it to play the same 3D movies over the network, you are wasting your time. On the other hand, throw anything to a 4K Sony tv, 3D is a breeze, both local and via the network.
I will be waiting for the big guys, Bob, Matt, Hendriks to throw in their towels t  see if they can make MC linux more playable on the network.
Thanks again.

Brian.

I am still struggling to fix the issues I reported several days ago.

My problem is not video, but audio issues either skipping or buffering, with these issues, it looks like it was the video having problems but in reality it was not.
The image the Nvidia cards spit out is astonishing, looks like 3D. The  PC runs very cool, you would think it will be loud , NO very quiet.

Here is what I just found out:

MC windows 23 xxx, any version, Device setting - there is  a slider setting or adjust that controls "more skip" or "more responsiveness", but looking at the Linux version it does not have it.

This may or may not have anything to do with this issue, I do not know.

More important, is the fact that I pulled out 4 external RAID boxes that were attached to the Windows server and attached them to the Ubuntu 17.04 server, then I did import, by setting up import rules.

Under the import rules, I remember selecting  "Analyse audio in Video".

I have to import almost 1500 mkv files. Watching the import goes on, I noticed the audio analysis for video went by so fast, I am starting to have doubts about the audio analysis for video mechanism. Note-- this is a clean setup and install of MC, libraries are external.

Today, I found out that some movies play very well... audio blending with video with either no skipping or buffering, while some videos will not play smooth at all.

I will like the developers to take a look at this again.

Is there any way to have a menu to do batch audio in video analysis by folder of choice?

It looks like asking MC to analyse 1500 movies that were already analysed in a different PC is problematic. Some files are skipped and others do not analyse very well.
With his new migration from Windows to Ubuntu 17.04, this is the only issues  regarding skipping and or buffering that I have encountered, please I will need your help and suggestion.

Thanks.

Would you enable the "compression" files in your detailed file view and see if you can find something in common with the mkvs that play smoothly and the ones that don't?

Also, have you enabled the process priority feature on your user account that was implemented in MC  23.0.25?

Sorry for the long delay in replying. Our internet service was down for days. (Modem has to be replaced).
I missed out on this 23.0.25 write up, because that was the exact time I was taking down Windows server and migrating to Ubuntu. I know I read something about it, now I can not find 23.025 listed so that I can go back and read more about it.
Also you wrote about "compression files" in my detailed file view... I am unable to find this info.
I can not locate it under Linux.
I have tried to restore the windows settings in my earlier attempts to migrate, but now decided to start with a clean slate to eliminate corruption. In order words, Ubuntu server does not have anything migrated from MC for Windows.
Could you please post or repost the special write up regarding process priority on 23.0.25.
Also, I have tried to install 23.0.32-2 (STRETCH). It finally installed, with a message to remove. When I tried to load it up, It just froze on me. I got a segment fault message.
I am now back on 23.0.28 with all my mkvs and Flac libraries back
Another notation .. In Windows startup.. MC goes to Theater view, but in Linux though I have configured it to load at OS start up, it does not. I will think it will act like  its Windows version.
Thanks.

Yeah, it doesn't work like it does in Windows/Mac. You'll have to manually add it to the startup applications for your desktop environment, or add it to the X startup scripts somewhere.

I just tried 23.0.32-2 on 17.04 amd64 with a GT640 video card using the nvidia-304 driver and it works fine without any messing around.

With the nouveau driver it also worked though screen movement was clunky.

I am using the 340.102 driver with no issues The Nouveau driver is not as smooth.
At first it will not install, but it was as of a few days ago. It will prompt to remove, but I will not.
When I will fire up MC 23... then I get seg fault. It looks like the seg fault pointed to the display.
On 23.0.28, I have not experienced any seg fault, except for issues noted earlier.
btw.. what is the meaning of Strech? at the moment I am only using a 4K Samsung JU40-7100 tv just for this final setup, then I will disconnect from the Samsung.
Thanks for your quick response.

If you're using Ubuntu: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,111373.msg769735.html#msg769735

Yeah, it doesn't work like it does in Windows/Mac. You'll have to manually add it to the startup applications for your desktop environment, or add it to the X startup scripts somewhere.

Thanks for your pointer.
I will take a look at it later.

On the link you sent to me, I got 99   139. It looks like that part according to your link and posts by others is working.
I am yet to post actual DLNA playback on the tvs for the audio breaking and jumping.
I will keep you posted.
Thanks so much for your guidance and directions.
I will also find a way to let MC starts on OS startup.

I am using the 340.102 driver with no issues The Nouveau driver is not as smooth.
At first it will not install, but it was as of a few days ago. It will prompt to remove, but I will not.

Stretch is the most recent debian distro. It's what MC is compiled upon.

You are using a single monitor I assume?

If you getting a prompt to remove MC23 when you have 23.0.32-2 installed the ubuntu thinks there is something missing from the dependency lists.
You could try
apt-cache depends mediacenter23
to show the package dependencies.

Before we go a lot further with it we need to understand what ubuntu thinks is missing.

Yes, I am using a single monitor or a tv (Samsung JU UN40-7100). Does it make any difference?
I could add an old non 1080P gateway monitor just for the purpose of testing.
Now I am on 23.0.28. For me to  find out what it is missing, I have to re-install the 23.0.32-2.
If so, say some prayers for me.

I update the conf file regarding the audio priorities , it came out as 99 139 os something. The audio playback is a bit smoother, not as obvious as it used to.
Also you mention "Compression" in my views? I am lost on this.
I went to my views on the Windows platform, can not locate any reference to compression.
I will re-install 23-32 in an hour or two, if I do not hear back from you telling me otherwise.

Thanks.

You should have backups of your libraries in the Documents directory in the users home directory in case there is an issue.
Compression is a database field. You can show it by right-clicking on a list view of files in MC and going down to compression and enabling it.
Let's try to see if we can get 23.0.32-2 working then we'll mess with the priorities.

Try moving the settings directory out of the way temporarily (MC will then startup fresh with no library or license).
From a terminal as the user running MC do:

mv ~/.jriver/Media\ Center\ 23/Settings ~/.jriver/Media\ Center\ 23/Settings.sav

The run mediacenter. You can even do it from the command line there by typing in
mediacenter23

You'll need to re-enter your license.
Report results please.

After running the settings command, i was able to install 23.0.31-2 with no issues. I also ran the apt cache command, resulted in nothing new, then did the dependencies command, also nothing new. I restored my licence. But it crashed on me as I went in to options to enable theater view-- galaxy skin and theme.
I then  removed the settings command, installed 23.031-2
I will stay away from theater view customization for now.
I will start all over importing libraries and do minor settings minus theater view.
I used two restores on my licence .

Thanks.

Thanks for testing it.
I'll check on the theater view. It's possible there were some openGL updates that could have caused some issues..

Edit: Where is this "galaxy skin and theme"? I'm not seeing it on my installs!

Hendrik, do you have any comments??

Sorry for this back and forth.
Since my last post, I have had to re-install twice, doing more testing:
Options: Location Start... this is fine.
mode: standard view if set, this is also fine. MC can be shut down and brought up.
When I set to go to Theater view, it does not like it, no matter which skin or theme.
I hope you will help me by giving me more restores if need be.
I will stay away from Theater view and try to get some imports of movies in.
My wife wants to watch some movies when she gets home.

Thanks, Thanks Thanks.

I brought this skin and theme over from Windows version.

I can file attach to you A.M Friday if you send me  a PM with e-mail info.

About the dependencies, it says: Vorbis-tools and Musepack-tools.
Using sypnaptic package, I found lots of Vorbis-tools and Musepack, I have no idea which to install <grin>
I am trying not to install utilities that are not needed, thus preventing issues in the future.
An Aside: The sound cracking or slipping issues seem to be worse with concerts blu rays,, like Bee Gees, Celine Dion Live in Vegas, Lionel Richie Live in Paris. Most movies play maybe 85% with no audio issues
Also: On Windows server, long ago, unable to watch Prometheus BD and Assassins Creed, the "Video" in these mkv break a lot, and this video breaking is carried over to the linux version.
note: The Windows server is an Asus all in one with Core i7 477X on the Cpu, 16 gig of memory with AMD R9 or so graphics. The gpu on this Asus is not Nvidia. <grin> Off all my collections, these are the only 2 mkvs that issues with image (banding/breaking.)

Thanks

Hendrik found the issue with the crashing in theater view. I'm making a new beta build as I write this.
The Vorbis and Musepack tools are not requirements, they are recommendations. The only thing they are used for is encoding into those formats.

I'd like to get one of those mkv's to test. I've seen a couple of reports with mkv issues that we've not been able to track down.

If you have the latest version of firefox you can use it to one time send a file up to 1 gig in size. You can PM me the link after you upload it.

A single mkv file is big.
Celine Dion Live in vegas.
Lionel Richie Live in Paris.
Bee Gees;
I will like to send you these Blu rays, make mkv from them, return later.
We got to get to the bottom of this.
JR company moved. If you agree to this, I can send you these Blu rays for ripping.
Is this ok ? Also, do you watch or play via network?... Play from a TV?

Thanks.

Greetings:
Thanks to you and Hendrik for fixing this theater view issue.
Installed the  new version, galaxy theme and skin do not crash MC anymore.
Remember these mkv files were ripped with makemkv years ago, and stored in external RAID boxes.
I have over time re-ripped these troublesome concerts blu rays of recent. The audio issues are also present on non concert blu rays, but not as annoying, some movies play well and a few do not play well on the audio side. .
Again, thanks so much to the TEAM.

Yes, one main problem resolved.
I am really enjoying this new build now. My movies splash to the screen with speed, as if the image is going to knock you down.  At times, opening screens look like 3D and screen is super fast. I mean "FAST"
Thanks to "my" CEO.
Take care.

George could you give the build from today a try? (for the crashing issue). It's 23.0.36.

Greetings:

I think I found a cause or causes relating to skipping, buffering etc.

As I still have my Windows server up on 23.0.41, I  compared the settings and options available to the Linux versions:

Before I go further, I have ripped and re-ripped again some of my mkvs to be sure I do not have some bad rips. I also have on the Windows server, a Western Digital drive with movies and concerts left for testing.
There are some  missing options on the Linux versions.:
The Windows version has: Audio:
                                            Device Settings:- Channels- Buffering.
Under buffering there is a slider from left to right that has to do with skipping, which reads "more skip resistant. From the left sides  a slider that goes  up showing more responsive. 0.05 seconds.
Under Video-- there is hardware acceleration video decoding.
General: Video card.. Hardware accelerated graphics.. automatic, highest quality low medium., then custom 6x full screen anti-aliasing.

On the windows server, I was able to get Celine Dion- A new day, Lionel Richie- Live in Paris , and Bee Gee One night only to play for about 20 minutes each with no skipping. This was due to the fact that I moved the slider almost to the end of the gradient.

Before this, without moving the slider up, the windows server playback over the network was just like the Linux server.
Then going back to the Linux server, I was unable to watch any of these concerts blu ray and movies

Today, I ripped Guardian of Galaxy vol 2 Blu ray, put it on the Windows server, it played nicely with a few audio skipping, but the movie was watchable. The server has an AMD card, a mediocre graphic card and the Core I7 is not as powerful as the Linux box.
Also on the Windows server, movies like Prometheus, Alien Covenant with heavy graphics played nicely with no audio drop out for almost 30 minutes. I noticed Prometheus and Covenant would break or video drawing slowly on the screen, before, then all just become smooth and pleasing to watch... All these now possible by adjusting the buffer menu options, which are lacking under Linux.
Also I am wondering if 3D can be played under current issues relating to audio skipping. I have not tried 3D playback since the resurgence of these issues.

Under Windows, we have menu or options to tweak 3D.
I will appreciate if you take some time to review the codes, to see if these missing options if added will fix or
improve the overall enjoyment.

Thanks.

George, the linux version doesn't have as many bells and whistles as the windows version.
All of the settings you are talking about with the exception of the skip buffer are tweaks to madvr and direct 3d which don't exist in linux.

Perhaps Hendrik might comment on the efficiency of the video playback performance on linux?

You can try messing with the buffering in linux by adjusting the buffer time and period time in the Audio Options, device settings.
The defaults ar 500000 and 100000. You can bump them up keeping the same ratio to see if it makes any difference. Maybe just add a 0 to each...

Glad to hear from you.
I see these values on Device settings for audio. I have no idea what value to use.
Is there anyway for Mr "H" to  tweak it for Linux?
Also in Windows, there is a place for Hardware Acceleration  Medium fast and high for graphics cards.
If video is going to play nice with audio, there got to be a way for MC to play both smoothly.
Now, it is not working at all. Audio is really messed up with video.
Please let Mr. "H" know that I am worried about these issues. A library with more than 1500 mkv movies not playable under linux. When I bump the values up, I will let you know of the results.
Another minor issue: Someone just reported Theaterview  freezing, locking under windows. Under Linux, it is doing the same also. Start up with theater vew, it goes to audio, though not asked to go to audo, then getting out is problematic.
I have to use ctrl alt del keys to escape.

Thanks.

I messed with those two entries by doubling the values on each. Playback still no fix.
Thanks.

At this time you simply need more cpu power to play video in linux than you do on windows.
I have no issues with playback of 1080 video even on a intel NUC as long as it's using a proper accelerated video driver.
Nouveau has known issues. If you are using that you will as well.

Are you playing your 1080P videos local or via the network?

I am not using the nouveau driver, I am using the 340.102 as listed and detected by Ubuntu.

My cpu is Intel 990 BX or X 3.87 ghz, 12 threads. with 24 gig of memory I do not remember the full specs. (Check out the specs on the cpu). You will see it is a heavy duty cpu. My Asus 2702I Windows server is not even as powerful as this.

The mobo is Assassin G1 Gigabyte. This mobo was designed for Gaming.

Everything I throw at this cpu works fine It has big muscle to do anything. At home, we watch movies over the network from various Sony/Samsung 4k tvs.

Just yesterday, my replacement USB wifi dongle arrived -- Enimax 7833UAC  an RMA replacement from the company. The old 7822UAC cruised at 866 mbs, while my new wifi dongle now cruises at 1300 mbs, and my 1000 mbs

wired Ethernet adds to the performance.

With this new wifi speed, I tried to watch Guardians of the Galaxy vol 2 (ripped). Video was astonishing, but the sound did not blend with it. I have tested with default ALSA, and tried a few others.
We watched the same Guardian of Galaxy vol 2 stored on a WD hard drive attached to the Windows server, movie played fine with one or two input lags. Movie was in my opinion 100% watchable.
(I can play anything on the Windows server from my Sony tvs with no issues EXCEPT a few input lag  .... 20 seconds to 35 seconds through out the course of any movie).

What I have been writing about is this.. those windows tweaks really make a big difference in performance between the windows server and the Linux server.

Now where is LAV filter, LAV audio and maybe video? Are these not Linux compatible through the use of ffmpeg?
Does ffmpeg not work with Linux?

I bet you, if someone there, you or Hendriks can find a way to add these Windows tweaks.. Buffer adjustment and the option to use Hardware Acceleration.. set to high, low, medium and or automatic, the sound issues will be eliminated.

More customers are going to want to use the Linux versions for movie watching over the server, and they are are going to be disappointed. From my point of view, If MC Linux can not play well with videos and audio over the network,
the main features of MC will be diminished.

BTW-- What is Hendrik saying or doing about this? I hope he is reading these complaints.
Around October of 2014, the  Linux platform was introduced, and right from the get go, I paid and every year, I renewed my interest by paying, without even using  it, now when time comes to use it, it is not working as expected.

Thanks.

George you must understand it's a massive task to port something as complex as MC from one platform to another and I'm sure you know that linux is not on a par with windows when it comes to things like video tweaking. On Windows the best performance from Media Center still comes from using directx even with all of the advances we've made in multiplatform video.

Now that said, the Intel NUC Dual core 1.8 ghz Id's with built in intel video using linux can playback 1080 mkvs flawlessly so you obviously have more than enough CPU.

We are working on things constantly and Hendrik reads these threads as well so you can be certain that you are being heard.

There's something wrong with your setups.  If your windows server regularly has "input lags" something is wrong.  You keep saying over and over that your Windows server won't play completely smoothly, so something is wrong.  You shouldn't need to adjust all of these "tweak" settings.  If you did need this, people would be complaining constantly about Windows MC Video not being smooth and there would be endless threads about how to tweak it so it was smooth.

Your statement about networking makes no sense.  If you are achieving 1300 Mbit/sec, that's faster than 1 Gbit/sec wired ethernet.  Wired should be SLOWER.

Perhaps we have a communications problem due to the language barrier.  Or perhaps I've misunderstood the details.

I have to go back to the point of you talking about your Sony TVs.  Are you trying to watch via DLNA (network) ?  If so, your video card is not in the mix at all.

Or are you directly connected from your Linux MC box, via HDMI, to one TV?

You are the one misunderstanding the details either not following the flow of my complaints, or your system is not set up like mine.

I brought up the 1300 mbs so that no one would think my issue is due to slow wireless speed. Even the wifi that was replaced  was able to cruise at 866 mbs, as of yesterday, a new Edimax was setup that cruises at 1300 mbs. I could tell the difference in speed internally. I also posted this Edimax info for others to read and try if  any forum member is interested.

Let me explain to you. It was Bob that pointed to the nouveau driver on the Nvidia card, and I stated several times, I am using 340.102. Right from the get go, The video card has never been an issue. In fact the 340.102 driver was the first driver that got detected correctly. There was never a time where the Nvidia video card was in the  midst of all these issues.

The image that this card spits out looks like 3D. Can we put these video card topic to rest now?

95% of the time, everything we do on the server is via dlna. Almost every room in the house has tvs (4k) mostly Sony. All rooms were wired with cat 6 by me several years ago, then later added Wifi.

I am using Netgear  R8000  Night hawk router 11 A C, The Server or servers are both wired with Ethernet. Then via Wifi, on the server, once wifi is enabled the server or servers are put on DLNA mode. The tvs in the  house see the servers, in fact both the Windows and the Linux servers are detected and seen at the same time as long as the Wifi is  enabled .

This is looking like a slightly advanced set up for MC. My libraries right now are portable 4 RAID boxes, detached from Windows server and connected to Linux Ubuntu 17.04. Ubuntu sees all the Folders with no issue and all movies are imported.

Here is a brief write up on these boxes.

I knew I was going to have a Linux server and I have to set up the boxes to be used for Windows OS and also be compatible with Linux.
What I did was to put the external RAID boxes under Windows format and Windows assigned drives  XXXX to these boxes.

Then I connected these boxes to the Linux OS, let Linux sees these boxes. I let Linux format and write to these boxes various disk info, this way, I can attach and  detach any or all to either the Windows OS or Linux.

With this type of setup, I can watch movies either from the Windows server or from the Linux server via DLNA. We hardly watch movies via direct connection, except when we watch Football via the 92 inch DLP Mitsubishi WD 92840.
This is the only TV that has direct connection, and it is not connected to a server yet, eventually it will very soon. The Linux server is going to be next to the Mitsubishi or its eventual replacement of 4K model.

My Windows server plays nicely.  In light of several issues from the Internet or from PCS in general, I am happy with the current Windows server. In a movie, we get input lag 25 ses -30 sec . Remember these are rips from Blu ray and  there could be errors or whatever.  I am not expecting perfection on these rips, but so far so good. I will not count these as show stopper. Also Wifi signal may drop. In general we are happy. I wish the Ubuntu setup would perform like the windows setup, I will not be writing up these explanations.
If you have $36.00 to spare, get the Edimax EW-7833UAC Wi-fi AC1750 , use the rtl8814au driver for Ubuntu , test your  wifi speed, then decide if  what I am reporting  to all forum members is due to your  perceived language barrier.
I am from Nigeria, and I have British education before migrating to the U.S. English is one of my native Languages because English is the official language in Nigeria. I have no problem in writing in English or speaking in the Queen's english.

Thanks so far for your help.

I'm not attacking you sir.  I'm simply saying that something is wrong and trying to help you get to the bottom of it.

So you are saying that you watch movies via DLNA correct?  If these reports you are giving are via a DLNA connection, then the troubleshooting methodology is entirely different than a direct connection.  This is a big difference.  DLNA versus direct HDMI connection use entirely different technology and decoding.

I think I have insulted you by suggesting a language barrier.  I apologize for my insult.  I did not mean to be insulting.  I was actually trying to say that maybe *I* misunderstood you.  I mistakenly guessed that you were not a native english speaker.

I hope we can fix your video performance issue.

Bob,
I am not new to PC programming:
I used to test Database for Borland/Ashton Tate, then did testing for a living for Xerox and Kodak here in Rochester, NY. I am also a retired I.T admin for a  local health care center.
I know the  headache involved in writing software. When the Linux platform was announced, I was happy, despite me not ready to use it, I paid and continuing paying to help support the effort.
I know the pain involved in this environment, because I used to be a Dbase programmer for several years. Testing Testing Testing is all I do or I did, and  it is in my blood.
We have a Problem: It is not related hardto  wired network, it is not wifi, it is not cpu related. something is not ok somewhere

Future customers may want to buy just for the networking capabilities and ability to play smooth video and  audio, I hope we find a solution to this.

I will continue testing and hoping we find a fix for it.

Thanks again for your time and patience
