No sound through DAC w/ WASAPI
« on: September 16, 2017, 04:00:24 pm »

Hello,

I just got a new DAC the Schiit Yggdrasil, but for some reason I can't get JRiver to work with it through WASAPI. It works fine through directsound, but in WASAPI the music plays but I get no sound. As well before sound starts my DAC clicks and then you hear the music play, with WASAPI I never hear a click happen in my DAC so no idea what may be causing that.

Any ideas of settings to try?

Nice DAC.  :)

I have no idea how to fix your issue, but other people here certainly will have good ideas.

I'm posting to tell you two things:

1. I'm rather jealous of your DAC.
2.  The Yggdrasill is somewhat unique in how it works; primarily it's multi-bit converter and the mega combo burrito filter.  Because of this, in order to get maximum performance, you'll want to avoid any kind of DSP in JRiver.  No output format conversion.  No volume leveling.  No volume control adjustments.  I would set volume to Disabled.  ...and of course no EQ, no convolution, etc.

Of course you can use whatever you want.  I hope you enjoy your new DAC!

Oh yes :) that's why I want WASAPI to be working so I can actually have all those settings!

Have you been to the Audio Setup page on our wiki?

So jealous of that DAC. :P

Shot in the dark: have you tried disabling event style in MC's Options > Audio > Device settings? If that allows it to work, I'd find it a bit odd disabling event style is needed for a DAC like that.

Also, have you installed the drivers from Schiit's site?

I haven't tried the drivers but I don't see one for Yggdrasil with Gen5 USB on their website, just emailed them.

I went through all the guides on the website, it's only WASAPI that isn't working for me :(

So another update, I can get WASAPI to work if I disable exclusive mode and use DSP to format the songs to the same output bits/khz as the system is set to in the Sounds control panel. Not sure why exclusive mode wouldn't work :(

Other question: When I have exclusive sound set and look at the cog next to the play bar it has Audio Path: Direct, Input: 44.1 16bt, Output: 44.1 32bit using WASAPI (direct connection)

Shouldn't the output be the same as the input?

You should be able to get WASAPI Exclusive working, and I would expect Event Style playback to work on any recent device.
Make sure that bit-depth is set to automatic. If that does not work, try working your way down the list.

There is generally no downside to outputting the highest bit-depth supported by a playback device. It's not a form of upsampling like sample rate changes.
If you have enabled TPDF dither in the advanced audio options it would arguably be better to output 24-bit though - whether direct or via a 32-bit container.

Setting the bit-depth to 24 bit made it work!

I guess my next question is why did automatic output send 32-bits when I was playing a 16 bit file. I believe Yggdrasil is a 24bit max device so the 32bit caused no sound it seems.

Seems like it incorrectly reports that it supports 32-bit inputs if that was the problem.
Media Center will output the highest bit-depth that the device claims to accept. It has no way of knowing what the DAC does when it receives that input.
To play a 16-bit file in 24-bit or 32-bit you just pad it out with zeros. Even if the source is 16-bit there are many reasons why the output may need to be greater than 16-bit. Even something as simple as changing the volume in the media player.

The dither setting shouldn't matter in your case, since you are going to be using no DSP at all, including Output Format.

On a similar note, I have a Audiolab MDAC+ but have a problem playing DSD files in native format. It WILL play when DSP converts everything to 176kHz but the the 1.4Mhz DSD file should be supported by the Audiolab MDAC+ natively. I just cant get the jriver software to leave it alone - I am using the USB input and it is perfectly happy with 24bit 48khz/96khz files. its ironic that the DSD audio files are the sampler files provided as a free download by Audiolab!

If you're trying to playback DSD files, try enabling DSD bitstreaming.
