Switch from PC to Linux = Questions (Buffering, DSD ouput etc)
« on: October 16, 2017, 08:41:32 pm »

Hi,

I've made the switch from PC to Linux MC and am unfamiliar with some of the settings:

1. On the PC, the buffering is displayed as MS, so the values I see are 100, 50 etc. On Linux, the values start at 50,000, but I don't know what they're 50k of?

Another way of asking is, if I set the buffering value on Linux to 15,000 does this equal 15ms in the PC version?

2. What is period time? This is new to me and don't know of an analogue from the PC to compare it to. What does adjusting it do and should it be as low as possible?

3. I've selected AUTO bit rate, when I play DSD (64), it tells me not enough bits are available to output the audio properly - what am I doing wrong and how do I remedy this please?

4. Is a 64 bit version planned for Linux - would be amazing if yes :)

5. Bonus question - I'm using Snakeoil OS and Gizmo won't work with it. IDK if it's even possible to get it to work, but I currently have to use VNC Viewer to control MC, which isn't a nice experience.

Any help gratefully appreciated - thanks community.

Not completely sure on the first two (I have an idea, but I don't want to be wrong) so Bob or Hendrik can take those two.

3. Enable DSD bitstreaming and hope your DAC supports DoP since I don't believe native DSD is supported in MC for Linux (yet, at least).
4. There's already a 64-bit (AMD64) version for Linux, along with the 32-bit (i386) and ARM (armhf) versions.
5. Since Gizmo doesn't seem to work, you might be interested in using Panel as a replacement. Make sure you enable and setup Media Network and whatnot - that could be why Gizmo wasn't working either as Media Network needs to be enabled. Fortunately there's an article on the wiki about Media Network.

Thanks Donkey, appreciate the answers.

Are Qs 1 & 2 very difficult for anyone to answer - I can't be the only person that has wondered this  :-X
