Latest USB Id Kit - 32 or 64 bit OS; Debian Linux Version?
« on: December 10, 2017, 10:14:39 pm »

Currently awaiting delivery of purchased USB Id Kit.  I understand it will have Media Center 23.

Is the Debian Linux OS a 32 bit or 64 bit OS?  I will be installing on Intel NUC 5i5RYH which is a 64 bit CPU.

What version of Debian Linux is on the the current USB Id Kit released?  Per the Debian web site the latest release is 9.3 (Debian 9.3 was released December 9th, 2017; Debian 9.0 was initially released on June 17th, 2017).

If needed, should I update to the latest Debian release?

Thank you for your time!

I might be wrong but I'm not so sure that the Id is 64 bit:

I haven't checked but my guess is that it works as a 32 bit OS.

I am sure that the Id version is MC22:

Don't know where version 23 comes from. It may be a future improvement but I don't think it's hit the streets yet.

A key requirement for the Id is stability so it tends to lag the latest version. One for the devs to put me straight.

EDIT: Oh, and just to make sure you've got it straight, you don't install the OS first and then the Id platform separately. It's a complete package - the idea is to require minimum user intervention to undertake an install. And because of that, access to the OS is restricted. So,you don't have the option of running other Linux applications.

Sounds you are leaning towards Debian Linux and MC 22/23 both being 32 bit operation.  Thanks for the info.

I'm NOT looking to run other Linux software on my NUC / Id / MC box... I want it to be only my digital media center for playback in my sound system.

So if I understand correctly "JRiver" will never provide OS updates my installation?  Or will any updates, Debian Linux or MC, come via the internet and "check for updates" option?

The "check for updates" option I figure will only be for MC, not the Linux OS.

Per the below link JRiver link MC23 is out.

Thanks for your time!

When you do "Check for updates", it will download a single package of files.  It will include updates to the OS, to MC, and to the JRiver firmware.  Sometimes one, sometimes all three.

You're correct, according to Bob.

Well, he should know. Thanks. Previously, I'd never thought to check / ask.

Yes, I know. I've got MC23 running in a couple of spots around the house via a Master licence.

I've also got an up to date Id and it's working with MC22. Refer my previous comments about version lag and platform stability.
