Panel -- Play Audio w/o transcoding
« on: December 21, 2017, 02:13:44 am »

Hello,

in Panel under Settings i can set the Audio Quality to High, Medium and Low. Does this mean the Audio will be transcoded in any case?

Background:
Most of my Music is in flac format.
I listen to my music with my ipad (which can't natively play flac) and with my AV Receiver connected to an Idpi.

Thank you for the information!

Sorry, my question was not clear enough.

Yes means converts in any case?

Is there any possibility to switch off the converting if not neccessary?

Thanks.

Well, you have to remember that Panel runs in the web browser and that web browsers don't support playback of all media formats (just a handful, actually), e.g. Safari on macOS and iOS doesn't support FLAC. So it kinda has to convert everything to another format that's supported by the web browser, depending on what media formats the web browser supports. If I had to guess, it might be converting FLAC to WAV which is more-or-less supported by all web browsers (except Internet Explorer), but I'm not sure. Take a look at the browser compatibility list relating to media formats here: https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Supported_media_formats

Other than that, don't think it's possible to avoid conversion unless the web browser you're using supports the format you're playing back. Or at least, it should be that way (e.g. it could read which web browser is being used, the version of the web browser AND the OS the web browser is running on via the user agent string, and adjust accordingly. Both Chrome and Firefox has native FLAC support now since a couple versions ago but AFAIK Chrome and Firefox on iOS may not support FLAC since every web browser that runs on iOS has to use Safari's WebKit engine instead of the engines Chrome and Firefox uses on other OSes).

Thank you for the information.

So, JRemote is the only way to play music on the iPad without transcoding. At least as far as i know JRemote supports flac on ios devices. Please correct me if i'm wrong.

Just to make sure I understand, please: Panel transcodes if I'm using to stream to a desktop browser or mobile device. But if I'm using Panel as a remote control to play music on my MC server or one of its zones, it's just playing the file straight up without any transcoding. Correct?

Thanks.

Thank you. Maybe there's a way to make the audio quality option only appear if "Here" is selected as the playback target.

Or change to text to “Audio quality when playing to web devices” — or something like that..

This sort of thing gets a vote from me - I've just spent the last 10-15 minutes scratching my head being confused by what Panel is telling me. I would have expected that part of the reason that MC won't convert down the quality to a capable renderer (such as an Id or an MC client) is that the server recognises the capability of the renderer/client. If that's the case, then there should be a mechanism available to achieve the functionality requested above.
