So I'm going to take the plunge and buy the JRiver id. If I understand correctly, it will come with Media Center installed, but is that just a Linux license or do I need to buy the master license separately so I can use my android phone or my Windows PC with it? I currently have MC 21 on the PC, but will I get the Windows update automatically or will I need to purchase that separately?

The Id includes an Id license for Linux.  You don't need any other license with it.

If you want to run MC on Windows, then you need a Windows license for MC.  Android can use Gizmo or Panel with no license.

If you're only trying to control the Id, Panel or Gizmo will work.   You don't have to use MC on Windows.
