I have tried importing on versions 22 and 23 most recently and both are unusable.

It takes hours and hours to import roughly 12,500 songs. Version 20 gets the same job done in ~5 minutes. My library lives on a speedy, local drive.

Antivirus?

It isn't normally slow.

Turn off auto import and audio analysis.

Thanks for replying, Jim. Sorry for the long delay in getting back to you. No antivirus installed and I've recently tried the same tests on a clean install of High Sierra on a faster, newer iMac. Auto import and audio analysis are both turned off.

I've now tried importing on three different Macs with the same results, very slow import speeds when using MC 23 or MC22. My library is on an external thunderbolt hard drive. What is odd/telling is that I don't have this problem at all when using MC 20 pointing to the same directory structure. Would a developer please enlighten me to what changed in the library import code for versions following MC20?

Anyone else have this issue? I can't be alone and I'd like to be running the newest version of MC. Thanks!

Turn off audio analysis and thumbnailing.

Does it have an Internet connection?

Thanks, again, Jim. Audio analysis is off, I don't know how to prevent thumbnail searches while importing, but they don't seem to be the issue. What's odd is that import flies through the first 50 files or so and then slows to a crawl as slow as 1 file per second, then it flies again for a few files, and so on. Seemingly, one of the file types that I import is causing the issue. I have tried limiting import to only the types of audio that I own; FLAC, DSD/DSF, ALAC, WAV, AC3. I have tried importing a smaller set of files.

It simply seems to be something that changed in the import function after MC 20. This issue affects my 2017 iMac with a clean install of High Sierra, my older iMac running Sierra, and my older MacBook Pro running El Capitan. All have plenty of RAM, fast SSD boot drives. These we all tested trying to import from a folder structure on a fast, Thunderbolt connected external physical drive. Invariably, MC 20 imports the roughly 13,000 files in under 8 minutes. MC22 and MC23 (I don't have a license for 21) take hours. I've attached a screenshot of the import summary from MC20, 12,885 files in 7min. 24sec. I've also attached a summary for MC23, which I stopped after 24min. 23sec. at 1,907 files.

I'd much prefer using MC 23, since it supports retina displays, and offers more features. Fortunately, I don't import lots of new files regularly, but the developers at JRiver should be aware of this issue and, hopefully, remedy it. Is there somewhere on the site where I can report this issue?

Quick update: I have narrowed the issue down to FLAC files, and seemingly only stereo FLAC files as 5.1 channel files seem to import quickly, but I can't be sure. DSD/DSF files import quickly, as do ALAC and WAV files. I'm baffled as to why bread and butter FLAC files would cause this issue?!!?

Again, all of this is a non-issue on MC20 and below. Jim, are you the developer or is there a development team? If the latter, can you inform the developers that this issue only started happening after MC20, and that it seems to be related to FLAC file import?

Jim, I have run a quick test to compare the differences in import speed between DSF and FLAC files in both MC 20 and MC 23. I've created two folders, one with 100 FLAC files and another with 100 DSF files.

I ran the import on each folder separately and found these results:

MC 20:
100 FLAC files import: 5 seconds
100 DSF files import: 0 seconds (actually just shy of 1 second)

MC 23:
100 FLAC files import: 1minute and 41 seconds (101 seconds)
100 DSF files import: 2 seconds

As you can see, there is a huge difference between these import times. I cannot be alone here as it happens on three different machines. I will be happy to run further tests, if you or your dev team cannot reproduce these results.

Yes, I've purchased full versions of 20 and 22 (which came with a free update to 23). Version 22 had this same import speed issue.

Jim, I appreciate your help. I'm a UX/UI designer for a small, eight person, hearing R&D/research company. We've created roughly twenty of Windows, Mac, iOS and Android applications over the years. I understand how support can be a hassle. Especially, a problem that can't be reproduced in-house. Please let me know if I can run any more tests to help resolve this issue.

Just a heads-up, this issue may have started with MC 21. I believe that I installed the trial version in 2015 to take a look and it had the same slowdown in import speed. For me, every version after 20 has had this issue, as far as I remember.

Thanks for looking into this, Jim. I'm glad that I am not alone.

After running those tests, I started a full import to get back up and running. The full library import on MC 23 just competed 13,000 songs in ~ 124min. Same import takes 7min. on MC 20. I've attached the screenshot.
