Driver problem
« on: January 15, 2018, 05:25:48 pm »

Not quite sure how to describe this one as it happens fast and there is no time to read the exact problem.

Start playing a show and something comes up like driver failed windows will use another driver.
Nvidia driver is uninstalled and windows uses a generic driver.

I then now three times have to reinstall nvidi and all works well

Using windows 10

Well here goes.
I have updated the nvidia driver and still on playing a movie nothing happens then a little box comes up saying driver failed to load will revert to windows driver.

I then have the task of re installing the nvidia driver

I wish I could offer advice, but that sounds like it could be a hardware issue.
I presume this is for HDMI audio? And Windows 10 is fully up-to-date? (1709)

can't be hardware as nothing has been changed in this machine.
it's either driver or Windows. It never happened with my earlier version of jriver

It may or may not be hardware. the fact remains nothing lasts forever.

Exactly where are you getting the new driver you are installing from? nVidia, the manufacturer of your video card, Microsoft?  What site and/or URL?

Confirm the make and model of your graphics card please, and the version of the driver you are installing.

I agree, hardware does fail, particularly HDMI ports on some hardware by the look of it. Not that uncommon. Particularly if the device is getting hot, and Perth has had some pretty warm weather lately, I believe.

Hello friend,
driver is from nvidia https://www.geforce.com/drivers card is a gtx 780 ti I had 388.71 then tried 390.65
HDMI cable is pretty new and computer not getting hot.
We boot it up click on a show and the driver fails to load then we get a green screen and I have to re install the drivers.
I do however note that after I have been using jriver in my office (library is on the HTPC) then start up the HTPC for viewing JRiver display is of the screen, I then go into nvidia and have to resize the desktop to a smaller size, then as the resolution is wrong I have to right click on the desktop anf put the resolution back to 1920x1080, This was a work around I found on the net. I was thinking of reverting back to an older driver

Well that card was released in late 2013, so driver support may be a bit dodgy.

I would go back to the earlier driver version to confirm the problem goes away. The trouble is, Windows updates can breal other things if you don't update drivers. So downgrade the driver now and just keep an eye on other things.

The convoluted steps you go through to get your desktop correct are a bit of an issue. My HTPC runs at 1080p, and my Workstation runs at 2560x1600. I don't have to do anything special to be able to watch video on my Workstation as a client of the HTPC, and I have an old HD5870 video card in my Workstation. Doing this never effects the HTPC display at all. It stays at 1080p as it should.

You should have to do any of that, but to improve that process a bit, have you tried to change the resolution first to 1920x1080, and then see if the desktop size fixes itself?

I dont use my workstation as a client, I use a networked library and I do all my edits on my workstation.
Its just odd that when we go to the HTPC JRiver views change sizes, eg all my documentaries are 5 across and are large, then another time we load it up and they are 7 across and tiny.

Ah yes, I forgot that was the way you used it.

Maybe when you direct connect to the networked library, and do something particular like play a high resolution video (testing settings or something), MC saves the resolution and layout of its display and then uses that when you start the HTPC. I don't know what settings are saved in the library with regard to monitor resolution, but I wouldn't be surprised if the sizing and position of objects is saved. Though I would have expected those to be saved with the MC installation, which means on your Workstation, rather than in the library.

Maybe there is a way to control that, but I don't know off the top of my head.

I dont remember why I went this way maybe a server issue for me.
If I go that way can the machine with the server on it be allowed to hibernate/sleep?
If so how do I set this up? Can the client edit the system? and do I still have the folders that I import from mapped?
PS Happy Australia Day

Happy Australia Day to you as well Maid.

You went this way because you can't do all maintenance tasks from a Client connected to a server, such as View Maintenance, Cover Art collection, moving files using F6 etc. Let's not rehash all that again.

Some other people do use MC the way you do, and are happy with it. There must just be something about the different resolutions used on your Server vs your Workstation. I don't know how to fix your resolution issue, or indeed your driver issue. I would have to set up the same situation as you have to see if my setup would have the same problem. But I don't have a nVidia card in my Workstation, so I probably could duplicate it. I do have nVidia in my HTPC, but I am running an old driver version, as per my signature, and haven't had the need to update it for a while.

Once you downgrade the driver, if that works, just use that until a newer driver comes out, then test if that one loads properly. If not, revert again. You could try searching the internet for the driver issue, as it doesn't sound like  MC problem.

The resolution issue you may have to live with.

Hi, I have searched the net for the issue and found nothing , which led me to the thinking something is getting screwed between the two machines.
If the old driver doesnt work I could try edits through remote connection and just see what happens or even go to the server client setup and use remote to do edits. Thanks for your efforts

 ;D ;D ;D ;D     8)

I actually found a few complaints about the driver version 390.65 on the internet when I looked back on Australia Day. I think it has problems, in certain situations. Never be an early adopter! Always use drivers proven over time, unless there is a security issue.  ;)
