Is Windows 8.1 Still Recommended Over Win10?
« on: January 23, 2018, 08:05:46 am »

A while ago I read that Windows 8.1 would do everything MC related that Windows 10 will do minus some update related headaches. Is this still the case? Will Windows 8.1 do HDR?

Recent updates have been frustrating and I'm wondering if it is worth just getting a copy of Windows 8.1.

Thanks

You need Windows 10 for OS-level HDR support.
I believe that NVIDIA's solution for HDR is supported on Windows 7 / 8.1, but I'm not sure if madVR supports that.

I wouldn't recommend running Windows 8.1 any more. After the first couple of updates, Windows 10 has become a much better operating system. It should also perform better than 7 or 8.1 now, after the Meltdown / Spectre security updates.

I went through same crap as you, rec head. As per our PM its better to disscuss this in forum so other ppl might benefit from it. I will use forum thread you already created https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,113893.0.html

already post my MadVR setting there ... though I highly doubt that's the source of your trouble

Windows 8.1 is still just fine. HDR on NVIDIA works properly as well, not sure about any other vendors though. Windows 10 may have fixed a bunch of issues since its release, but every major update they also break stuff again. On a media playback only system, I don't yet see an advantage in Windows 10 - unless you need things exclusive to it like Netflix 4K playback or something like that.

Windowed-mode presentation is handled much better on Windows 10 as well - though that's a quality-of-life upgrade more than a performance difference.
Dolby Atmos for Headphones, and Dolby Atmos game support also requires Windows 10. That's not "media playback" related, but is Home Theater related.
