Author Topic: Got hardware/software squared away; NOW I NEED A REMOTE. Where do I start?  (Read 1657 times)

That’s it, after a lot of learning curve (curb?) including stumbling through Linux, GUI, Samba shares, sudo wrinkles (I am a Windows guy), I am now looking for a remote solution to control my individual clients. One NUC is set up as library server (to my media on an unRAID box) and I have another NUC set to be a client.

Where do I start evaluation the various solutions?

I use two Harmony One remotes and a Harmony hub. All work very nicely. I use a Harmony One with the built in IR on my NUC very happily  :) The Harmony hub allows control via Amazon Echo and other Windows based software such as Home Remote. And once you have Alexa involved, then Houseband becomes another option...

Its very cool telling your media center to play a track, turn the volume up and down, pause or stop all by voice commands (and many more).

Just realized I already read this. I am looking for personal comments. Am looking for a control over IP solution. Only need to control MC especially in theater view.

That would take control of the library server Debian desktop and push content to the client to render?

You're running linux I see. TightVNC is available for linux but as I only use Windows I'll back out here...

Part of my getting my head wrapped around a remote solution is grokking DLNA’s operation and what, exactly, Media Center is doing when using that. Am I pulling content from the server or pushing it to the client. I’ll have it all figured out soon.  :)

The DLNA topic on the wiki explains, but MC can do several things.  It can act as a remote control, or as a server, or as a renderer.

The best way to learn is to try things.
