Clicks and pops in MC24
« on: April 16, 2018, 04:29:17 pm »

I have just installed MC24 and I hear clicks and pops when playing music or movies
MC23 just works fine without any issues

I have tried playing around with buffer settings, no change
I have a Focusrite Clarett 2pre USB audio interface

Many thanks

Try using MC's DSP Studio > Output Settings to force everything to the same format.  Try 16/44 first.

Did you check the box next to Output Format?

Try 48Khz.

Try WASAPI or DirectSound.

Yes, I did check the checkbox
Tried 48kHz as well, still the same issue

Try turning off the Parametric Equalizer.

Actually I have to take it back
After restarting MC24 the problem is back :(
and cannot be resolved by disabling/enabling Parametric EQ

What I notice is that when I force Output format to 96kHz there are no clicks anymore
But when I switch back to 44.1kHz or to No change it comes back again

So use 96KHz.

Try WASAPI and DirectSound, as well.

WASAPI works well too

But I don't want to use WASAPI as 4 channel mode only works in ASIO
Also I don't want to resample to 96Khz all my files; I want to play them as-is

I am sure this is a bug in MC24 ASIO as I mentioned MC23 works just fine
Please resolve the bug
Thank you

Some ASIO devices are particularly finnicky about buffer sizes, I would generally recommend to try changing the buffer size both in MC and in the ASIO control panel of your device.
My Focusrite 18i20 over ASIO took some fine tuning of the buffers to be stable at all times.

There is no disadvantage to resampling everything.  You're not losing anything.

All sample rates shall work without issue - as they do in MC23
A product update shall be about enhancing the product and not making it unusable - which is the case now with MC24 (not to mention that we pay for the updates)

I would like to ask you please to take a look at MC24 ASIO support as something went bad with it since MC23
Many thanks

OK, for now it seems I have a solution:

I disabled 'Use large hardware buffers' in MC24 ASIO settings then manually set a lower buffer size (from 1024 to 256) in the ASIO control panel of my audio interface and now all sample rates/channel configuration seem to work fine, no clicks and pops
Strange is that one would believe that these clicks and cracks are caused by too low buffer settings and not too highs...

The "use large hardware buffers" option doesn't seem to work with every device.
I don't know what it actually sets, but my DAC is also better off with the option disabled. Doesn't matter what buffer size I set, large or small, but I can't use the "large hardware buffers" option.

I'm not sure if you understand or if you agree, but the problem is probably the DAC, not our software.  You seem to have found settings that it is happy with.

With my Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 I think it was setting the ASIO buffer size to the largest possible setting (1024).
I found this quite annoying, because it wasn't obvious what it was doing and it didn't set it back to the setting I had it at (256) when finished.

That's what I would have assumed, but if I recall correctly it was not doing that in my tests, as my DAC supports up to an 8192 sample buffer (which I use).
I'd have to test it again, but really the only thing that mattered for me was disabling the option.

EDIT:
Nevermind, it doesn't appear to be changing the buffer setting for my DAC at all.
I set the driver to 64 samples and Media Center for 192kHz playback, which is too low (requires a minimum of 256 samples) and I get distorted playback via ASIO no matter what the buffer size is set to in Media Center.

WASAPI buffer size works as expected.
