I am using JRiver Media Center for Windows to play a DSF files through my Intel NUC and I cannot get it setup to correctly play DSF files on my Topping D50 DAC. When I play a DSD file through JRiver the D50 displays PCM 352.8kHz 32Bit.

When I play the same file using a Raspberry Pi running Volumio the D50 displays DSD 2.82MHz.

I have read everything I can find on the subject and cannot get JRiver and the D50 to play nice together. I either get nice sounding music showing PCM 352.8kHz 32Bit, VERY LOUD static, or silence.

I have JRiver configured thus:
Audio Device: Topping USB Audio Device [ASIO]
Bitstreaming: None (recommended)
DSP Studio: Nothing is checked.
Device Settings: DSD bitsream in DoP format is unchecked
I am running the Topping D50 driver version 4.14.0
JRiver says Input: 352.8kHz 64bit 2ch from source format DSF

I've tried setting bitstreaming to DSD and it always results in VERY LOUD static. I've tried DoP and it always results in silence.

You have to enable DSD bitstreaming to get DSD playback to work, otherwise MC will convert DSD to PCM on-the-fly.

Also make sure both system volume and internal volume is set to 100%, otherwise it can cause issues with static sounds. If I had to guess, this is likely the source of the issue. Otherwise you might have to contact Topping about that.

I set Bitstreaming to DSD and the volume to maximum. Under playback options the Volume section is configured thus:

Volume mode: Application Volume
Volume Protection is unchecked
Maximum volume: 100
Startup volume: -1

JRiver now correctly states that the input is DSD 2.8 MHz 1bit 2ch and the Topping D50 DAC says DSD64 2.8sMHz 1Bit but the playback is VERY LOUD static.

I tried Startup volume: 100 also with the same results.

What else can I try?

Is the system volume in Windows set to 100%?

You can right click the speaker icon next to the volume slider in MC and change the volume from application volume to internal volume, system volume, etc. Make sure all of them (application, internal and system volume) are set to 100%. If that doesn't work, you might have to contact Topping about it.

That worked! I also discovered that I could make the static much quieter by reducing the volume on the DAC.  DUH!  Anyway, with all volumes set to 100 the files are correctly playing as DSD64 2.82MHz 1Bit.

Spoke too soon...

The static is back. About every 10th time the song plays without static. All the other times I hear it faintly under the static. Looks like I need to go to Topping.

If you can, try using WASAPI for playback.
ASIO in Media Center lacks the "Maximize Device Volume During Playback" option.
 
I hope that it can be added some time, as it is required for bitstreaming to work correctly on many DACs.

If trying WASAPI, DoP will have to be enabled (along with exclusive access). As far as I know WASAPI doesn't support native DSD, just ASIO.

I got it working with ASIO. When JRiver is playing the DAC disappeared from the Sounds setting on the PC. I assume that is because JRiver is taking control of the device. Anyway, with JRiver not running my PC was showing a volume control for the DAC set at 21. I moved it to 100. Now whenever I play any DSD song it plays correctly.

Yep, that'll do it. Hopefully the volume level sticks in the Windows mixer. Might be something to watch, just in case.

Hmmm, is that even possible with ASIO? If so, I second this request.

I control volume with my e22 DAC's remote. The DAC is connected directly to a power amp. Here are the settings I prefer for PCM and DSD:

It should be possible so long as the correct device is specified in the ASIO volume control options (automatic did not work with my DAC).
