Can we start music playing then turn off the display without JRiver stop playing

not if your using hdmi pass thru to your tv....some tv's have where you can turn off the display but still have sound, see if that works if this is your set up

Depending on your setup you can use one of the remotes to start playback without having to turn the screen on in the first place. I have dealt with the HDMI woes you are facing and found this to be the most reliable solution.

Need more info on what device you are trying to play to really answer the question " What to push on the remote??"

but,

I don't know about Onkyo AVR's. I use the MO 4Media app, when I select my AVR as the destination and hit play it wakes the AVR and the music plays. The other JRiver remotes should work that same. You can also use the HTPC as the destination. You would need to turn the AVR on first.
