After opening MC, Other Audio (like Youtube) affected negatively
« on: December 09, 2018, 03:00:17 am »

Not sure how many others have noticed this, but if I start up my system and open a browser and play a youtube video, my audio is clear.

If I open MC and play some audio, then afterwards, other audio from other applications, like playing a youtube video within a browser, is distorted.

It's distorted in that it has a lot of clipping, where it's as if every recording was poorly recorded and clips to the point where it hurts your ears, even at low volumes, exhibiting a great amount of distortion.

If I close MC, the problem doesn't go away.  Only restarting my computer solves the problem.  So I'm assuming MC is utilizing some kind of audio driver or filter in such a way that it affects all audio for the rest of the session.

Audio played within MC sounds normal with no clipping.  This issue has happened on many different computers, laptops, desktops, with many versions of MC.

I am not usually using DSP.

Random thought, is the WDM driver being used?

Another random thought, is the WDM driver enabled under MC's Options > General > Features with WDM driver checked? If it's checked, try unchecking it and restarting MC. Maybe it's lurking in the background somewhere? Otherwise my final random thought is are you using DirectSound, WASAPI, ASIO, etc. in MC?

That's where I looked when you asked before.  So maybe I didn't understand your original question.  The WDM box was unchecked in MC.

But to answer your previous question, where would I go look to see if WDM is being used?  Did you mean being used by the browser?

My playback device of "Speakers" is using a RealTek driver and in MC the box next to WDM is not checked under Features.

Does it say DirectSound or WASAPI or something like that? You can also click on the audio device under MC's Options > Audio > Audio Device and see what outputs and drivers are available there.

Audio Device is DirectSound.  I can also choose RealTek.  But the default has always been DirectSound.

Sound playing within MC is always good quality, it's just external apps that get distorted only after opening MC and playing something.  Problem persists even if I then close MC and continue playing, for example a youtube video within a browser.

So I'm assuming the browser is using the RealTek driver which is the one associated with the windows Playback Device.  I'm not sure if my goal here is to attempt to use the same device or a separate one.  I'm sure lots of other people must be having this problem because it occurs so consistently for me on so many machines.
