Install without internet
« on: December 16, 2018, 11:06:52 am »

Hi,
When I install JRiver MC on Windows 7 64 bits NOT connected to internet (minimal audio PC), it says
"There was a problem restoring the license"
"There was a problem communicating with the license server".

Is there a way to install MC without internet? (I have other PCs connected to internet, naturally).

Thank you.

You could use the Install Key that you received by e-mail when you restored.

There's a link to this page in the e-mail:

Thank you.
I have done that, ant I get:
"There was a problem restoring the license"
"There was a problem communicating with the license server".

So the question is: can MC be installed without connecting the PC to internet? (in other words: after entering the install key, does MC connect to internet to activate the license or check something?)

Jim means use the .mjr file attached to the email you received.

Also it's worth pointing out if you intend to do any kind of video playback, you'll have to connect the PC to the internet so it can download the required components to get video playback working (e.g. LAV, madVR, etc.). If you're audio-only, you don't have to worry about that.

I have done that (double-clicking the .mjr), ant I get:
"There was a problem restoring the license"
"There was a problem communicating with the license server".

I do not plan to play video.

The Install Key is only good for 14 days.

Why not connect it to the Internet to start?

Because it is an audio PC I made 8 years ago; I think (I cannot remember) deactivated many Windows 7 services including network services.
I tried to plug an Ethernet cable to this PC but it did not work.

So I will try to re-activate network services etc.

Thank you for your help.

Disabling Windows services, even on a PC not connected to the internet, is a very bad idea and just breaks stuff for no reason in my opinion. Plus it doesn't really gain anything in regards to audio quality either, also in my opinion.

I have re-installed Windows 7 on my audio PC in order to get internet access.
I have installed MC and entered my license [EDITED OUT] in its Help menu.
It looks Ok, but I have received an email containing:
"You have just restored a license for JRiver Media Center. There are 10 restores available in each 12 month period.  There are 8 restores remaining at this time"
Will my MC stop working after 14 days or so?

The Restore wiki link explains it best...

https://wiki.jriver.com/index.php/Restoring_a_License

No, it's not going to stop working. It just means that the license itself was restored (using 1 of the 10 restores within a year in the process) and the .mjr license file can be downloaded from the email attachment and it can be used for up to 14 days to re-register MC on the PC (or any other PCs you own, within reason of course!) from the time you restored the license so you don't have to input the registration code again (and thus use another restore). After the 14 days you'd have to restore the license again (and thus another restore would be used).

Even though it says there's 10 restores in a year, if you do run out of restores in that time period the JRiver team is pretty good about resetting your restores.

If you post your license it may be revoked.
