Play to Chromecast from JRiver without BubbleUPnP?
« on: December 18, 2018, 08:43:53 am »

I do not want to install JAVA on my PC. Or any PC. BubbleUPnP requires JAVA.

Are there any other solutions that would allow me to cast to a Chromecast Audio setup?

BubbleUPnP in android can cast DLNA sourced (MC acting as a DLNA server) media to chromecast. Also JRemote can do it. Not sure about Gizmo. I think that MO 4Media also has chromecast support nowdays.

I was hoping for a solution that didn't need an Android device. Works fine from the JRiver Remote to Phone... to Chromecast Audio.

Silly. Wish we could just get a JRiver renderer and avoid needing another piece in the middle. Maybe once JRiver Android works on Android boxes I can do this...

Sometimes what you want to do is really hard, or clunky, or requires extra pieces.

In my personal opinion, using a Chromecast with MC is in this category:  It's really not designed to work with it.  I would use a different audio end point myself.

Just my opinion.

Brian.

I get it. Thing is, I have them and would like to use them.

I will just put the Android device in the middle. Done. Just silly. Though I guess with the fire sale they had on them, unlikely there will be any reason to bother supporting it really.

A Chromecast Audio is $35. Yes, it is a somewhat limited device but it is also a nice option for certain circumstances.  It has both a build in DAC and an optical output. An ID is more expensive and more complicated to manage and is more than is needed in many circumstances.

Native support for CA would be a nice addition to MC.  Meanwhile people use BubbleUPnP.  Bubblegum is on this forum and a collaboration to bring native CA support to MC has been suggested before.

But, it is also possible that they are a thing of the past. Which means there is not much to replace them at that price point.

The original post was about Chromecast Audio, not Video.  They are different devices for different purposes.

Yes. Chromecast is supported in Gizmo and the Android version of JRemote.

Ok so the solution talked about is using JRemote on android to play a video from MC server then cast it to a Chromecast renderer.

Thanks everyone, using iPhone so moot for me, but will explore BubbleUpnP.

Gizmo is for Android, actually. JRemote is the only option... but, MO 4Media for iOS is now ready for testing.

That is the other possibility. But trying to work with what I have at the moment, what with Christmas and all. ;)

There is a fire sale on CA at the moment. They are $15 each or were as of about a week ago.

My issues with BubbleUPnP is JAVA. I do not want JAVA anything on my machine and this requires a full JAVA runtime to work. Pass. If this was a machine I don't use for anything else and wasn't connected to the Internet I would be OK with using JAVA.

One potential "workaround" I can think of for the Java requirement is running it in a virtual machine.

Isn't Java security problems due to browser plugins and not  trusted local applications? Also BubbleUPnP Server is different than BubbleUPnP client in phone and it is also unnecessary if you just want to stream using DLNA under your home network.

I get it that you don't want to use phone or BubbleUPnP (or java) so above statements are just to clarify things for others who might be interested in this

Sure, I could do that. Definitely an option. Not really sure I want to run a VM on my 7 year old desktop.

It needs an upgrade...ok... Replacement.... But it works out well so it's hard to justify.

Using Sandboxie might be another "workaround", not sure how well it'd work though.

I work for a software company who has some applications developed in Java, and this is what we do.  It's fairly easy, you just copy the entire Java folder structure wherever you want, and call java.exe from the command line with a '-jar "path/to/.jar file"' argument.  This way it isn't registered with the system, and no external code can run unless you intentionally call it.

Also, the poster above is absolutely correct, a JRE (Java Run Time Environment) is completely different than a Java plugin in your browser.  We have java code in secure environments, with no issues.  Again, it is sandboxed, but we have never had any security issues.
