What's new in MC25?
« on: January 10, 2019, 12:20:45 pm »

I just got an email urging me to upgrade (pre-upgrade, actually) to MC25. I'm wondering what the benefit of this would be: is there a list or document somewhere describing new features that I'll see if I upgrade to MC25? I'm using MC24 now (for Mac) and I keep up-to-date with the latest stable updates (I'm currently at 24.0.69). I'd feel better about upgrading if I knew what I was buying.

Integration with TIDAL would need to be a feature for me (with first unfolding of MQA). Unfortunately, I had to switch to a rival product in order to get these features (TIDAL and my FLAC library integrated as a single library too). But I am paying through the nose for that product. I really want to switch back to JRiver. :(

Tidal likely won't happen (do a search of the forums to find out why). As for MQA, MC *should* be able to do this already as long as you have volume set to 100% and you're using no DSP at all. MQA *should* passthrough without issues. I know that was tested on Windows by multiple users but I'm not sure about Mac. In theory it *should* work the same way.

Note to JRiver folks: If you want me to buy an upgrade to a program I've purchased in the past, please tell me what is in the upgrade that is different from what I've already bought.

Thanks!

Lyrics lookup
Movie trailers
and so on.

There's no need to upgrade.  We appreciate your support if you do.  There is a steep discount for people who have faith that something good will be coming, but you can wait until the middle of the cycle and pay a little more if you see something you want.

A lot of work goes into general support of existing installations.  Updates for operating system changes, for example.   Server support for CD cover art and track lookup, forum, licensing support, playlist upload server, and on and on.  This costs us money.  Your upgrade helps.

I've never looked carefully, but my impression is that most people who upgrade do so when the best price is available.

Well there are features that were supposed to be in the build for MC24 (Blu Ray menu support) that aren't actually available?!

MQA is not a lossless Audio-Format (in the high-res formats) - and requires licence-payment to any company that would integrate a real working MQA decoder. Thus, this is for a real Audio nerd  not a very important thing - and playing the 44.1 kHz version can be done like you told. However I think there is also a lot of pressure concerning this feature (for what ever reasons). And IMO JRiver should always do some internal assesments on there given statements. Time is always moving forward

Blu-ray menus work in MC24.
Well.. I've got problems with them... The BD won't open and I get a error message instead: "Something went wrong with playback. Details: Failed to connect Video decoder to source / splitter"

Maybe you can tell us how to get through this then?

Thank you!

MC for Mac does not support DVD or BD playback or ripping at all.

I recommend you use a ripping program like makemkv and then play the resulting video files with MC. It works very well that way.

Blu-ray menus work in MC24.

Thanks, does that apply to the Mac version? I was under the impression now that it was a feature that was only available on the PC version? It was the only reason I upgraded from 23 > 24...

If I go to - Settings -> Video -> Play Blu-ray discs using Menus is not there. I take it this feature will not be coming to MC25 (Mac version)?

I think it would be helpful in future when you announce changes for upcoming new builds that you specify they will on work on one type of system.  ;)

Have been upgrading for years. $25 for Master license gives a sense that I am supporting an ongoing project.
Spotify and Tidal support would be truly valuable to me. Although I have a good sized local library, which I playback through a Naim unitiqute 2 - which sounds better when JR transcodes to PCM than playing back FLAC, I really do want to utilise Tidal and Spotify within my home system (I can do that without JRiver but that marginalises MC).
So please, support for Tidal and Spotify

So please, support for Tidal and Spotify

Look above or look here, Tidal isn't going to happen because they're financially unstable and JRiver can't rely on them so they can't justify the money and development resources in doing so. Spotify probably won't happen either because of the same reason(s) or any other streaming service for that matter.

P.S. FLAC is PCM. ;)
