Author Topic: Portable install loses registration when opened on different PC, master license  (Read 2707 times)

After many years of using a standard Windows license, I purchased a master license for MC25.  I installed the latest version of MC24 on my Windows machine, installed the license file successfully,  and then used the same installation and created a portable install on a USB thumb drive.  The portable install showed that it was registered.

The problem is that when I took my USB with the portable install to work and opened it, MC24 said that the 30 day trial had expired (even though I had installed it the night before).  Am I missing something here, or is this a bug?

Anyone on the JRiver team that can help with this?  Am I doing something wrong?  Will I have to wait until MC25 is released for my master license to work for a portable install?

I don't think it's a bug, since plugging the USB thumb drive into another PC and running that portable version of MC there would likely cause the registration to be lost. MC's registration (and the ability to stay registered) is dependant on things unique to the PC it's been registered on. When that changes (e.g. changing to a different PC), those conditions aren't present, so MC loses the registration. I don't think anything can be done to prevent the registration being lost when switching PCs and running the same portable MC build on both.

You might try sticking to installing on the PCs you plan to use MC with. Trying to use the same portable install with all of them likely won't work the way you want it to.

So what is the point of a portable install? Surely MC should recognise the flash drive as a special case and register itself to that.

I could certainly plug my MC23 portable into my pc at work and it would work just fine. There has to be a valid registration on the pc used to perform the portable installation, other than that, I think it should just work. I never tried to run the portable MC on the pc used to place it on the USB though.

Exactly my problem.  I don't see the point of using a portable install on a machine I already have MC installed on (although perhaps there is one).  I want to use my portable install on my work PC where I don't want to [can't] install MC.  I am able to use other portable applications just fine on that PC, but for some reason MC24 acts like an expired trial version.

Have you tried putting the install key .mjr file on the usb stick and clicking that when it is plugged in on the works pc? Might work - just a guess in the dark really!

I wouldn't do that.
To the JRiver license servers, this might appear as license sharing. Also, it would attempt to write registry entries on the work machine, which sounds as though it would fail due to limitations placed by system administrators at work.

You must perform the portable installation on a system with a correctly licensed version installed normally.
The portable installation should then write a license file in the installation folder on the USB drive. This goes with the drive and should work, regardless of which machine it is run from.

It sounds as though you have followed these steps correctly, however, there may be something up with the cross-over from MC24 <> MC25 on a portable install, I don't know, and can't test as I don't have a master license.

As Marko says, this won't work.

If you have a MC24 licence you could install that on your PC at home, then redo the portable installation, and see if that works on the work PC.

As Marko says, it may be a MC25/24 thing. If you get that working, report back and maybe JRiver can fix whatever the issue is.

Unfortunately, I don't have an MC24 license on my PC at home.  I have an MC23 Windows license and skipped MC24 and bought an MC25 Master license.

The MC 25 licence you purchased will allow you to install the latest version of MC24 and run it - no problem.

No. That is true. But the discussion is about getting a Portable Installation working, which it seems to be a problem when using a MC25 licence with MC24.

Why are you yelling? I did poke my tongue out at you, so you should have known that I was teasing.   ;)

And that is what I have done.  I have the MC25 Master license and used it to register MC24.  I then reran the install package and create a portable installation on a USB drive inserted in that same machine.  That portable install shows as registered when opened on a machine with a registered copy of MC24 on it,  but when I take that same USB drive to work where I don't have MC installed, MC24 portable shows as expired.
