Can MC21 and MC24 peacefully co-exist?
« on: March 15, 2019, 07:58:37 pm »

I updated to MC24 (in anticipation of MC25...), and never deleted MC21 from my computer.  I didn't have any problems until I had a disc or two to rip.  I had MC21 closed and MC24 open but when I opened "rip disc" in Tools, MC21 opened and I could only rip the disc using MC21 (I tried closing MC21, but it reopened when I pushed the "rip disc" "button").

Today I had a new problem, too.  I ripped a disc and my library in MC24 wouldn't recognize the new files (they appeared immediately in the library in MC21).  I tried auto-import, I dried import a single folder.  I could see the new files in MC24 if I highlighted "Audio" in the "Tree" and then did a search on the Artist name, but the new files didn't appear in the Recently Ripped smartlist, the Recently Imported smartlist, in the Tree under the Artist name.

I know I should just delete MC21, and I will.  But I am curious about how MC21 and MC24 are acting together.  Any ideas?

I would bet that your Mac's preferences are set to open MC21 when you insert a CD.  Go to System Preferences (the gear looking icon on the dock) and then CDs & DVDs.  Find the preference for what to do when inserting a CD.  If it's set to MC21, change it to MC24.  That should do it.

Good luck.

Thanks, Brian, I'll look.  I don't remember even setting a preference, other than "play"  and "HDMI" (for output) for CDs or DVDs.

Was using MC18 over my 4 pc.s home and notebook. But now that I purchased the upgrade = all my playlists are gone.

It's strange that MC24 also does not consider my prior rules. Hope MC25 will allow me to see my private content, also to see all public content!

Do a library backup in MC18 and restore that library backup in MC24.

I looked in Preferences and didn't see where I could set a particular application to play a CD. I must have missed it.

A new weirdness: I ripped a CD in MC21, to the same folder where the library I set up in MC24 looks for audio files.  The new tracks appear as they should in MC21.  They do not appear in MC24.  I've even ran an import, double checking that the device and directory/ folder where the new tracks are stored is being searched by the library in MC24.  No luck, it will not find or import the new files.  Any ideas?

This should direct you to the right place:

It sounds like the files are not where you think they are.  In MC21, highlight one of the files in question, then do: <right click> Locate > On disk external

Then you will see precisely where the file is.

On the other hand, is there a good reason to leave MC21 installed?  If not, you can just remove it (drag it to the trashcan).  You might have good reason for keeping it around.  I'm just trying to simplify things for you if possible.

Good luck.

Thanks, Brian, System Preferences had it.  I was looking for it from the Finder in Applications/Utilities.  Everything is just a little different between OS-X and Windows, and I don't remember where to look every time.

My new music files, according to the Finder, are exactly where I think they are.  And exactly where I'm telling MC24 to look for them.  I tried importing twice, once using auto-import, and once using a single import where I "pointed" to the exact folder where "The Verdict" is.  Weird.

To answer your last question, I guess I am keeping MC21 around for exactly this reason; in case something in MC24 didn't work correctly.  I was a little surprised that when I upgraded, MC24 didn't delete MC21 during the installation process, so that's another reason for keeping MC21.  If I can get those new audio files imported into my MC24 library, I will delete MC21...

I double checked, and the new files are exactly where I think they are.  I tried "import single folder" and was told to find "a valid folder to import".  I then tried importing a folder that MC24 already recognizes (a different album from the same artist).  And that didn't work either.

I noticed when I "browsed" for the folder I wanted to import with MC24 library import tools, the path came back …/Queensry che instead of …/Queensryche (there's an extra space in the name for some reason).  I tried importing with both paths, and neither is recognized.

Why don't you install MC25 now?  It's on the Mac board.  It might solve the problem.

The name of the folder having a space could be the cause.

For the mystery files there are normally only a few choices:

1.  The files are not where you think they are.  That folder with the the space in it might be a clue.  I think MC handles spaces OK though, as I have MANY Album names with spaces in their names.
2.  Your files are already imported but you don't know it because the metadata is missing or wrong.  The way to detect this is to search for the folder name in the search bar and see what comes up.  If you find a bunch of files that have no album, no artist, etc, you have probably found the files in question.  The exact path will help you determine this.
3.  Your files are corrupted or something which makes MC not import them.  This is rather unlikely here; just including it for completeness.

Auto import settings allow you to edit each folder to specify file types to import.  It's possible you're not importing the right file types.

I got it.  I ended up moving the [Album] folder to trash, then moving that folder back to my library.  Then I used the Library tool MRC to rename the files and associated folder according to my convention (which is the same convention recommended by JRiver).

I think the original problem was somehow created because my Mac didn't handle the umlaut in Queensryche properly, for some reason.  What was really weird and frustrating is after I shut down and restarted the [Album] disappeared from my [Artist] folder, even when I looked in the Finder.  But, when I searched for various songs or even the [Album] folder using the Finder, all of the files and the folder appeared in the search.  When I showed properties, the path was even correct.  I have no explanation for that ridiculousness.  I was going to move the whole [Album] to trash and then re-rip the CD, but decided to try moving to trash then back to my Library folder first.  That worked.  For some reason.

Brian.

I had another incident, this time trying to import video files (four TV show episodes, ripped from a DVD using MakeMKV).  Two of the episodes imported just fine.  The other two disappeared when I ripped them.  The files were in the correct directory according to the Finder, but I could not find them with MC25.  After stewing about it for a while I started searching in the TREE and discovered the missing files in Documents.  I retagged the two files and they popped into the Video directory just like I expected them to.

Now if I only knew why the got tagged as Documents in the first place when I ripped them.  At least the fix is simple.

I've had that happen at least a dozen times.  It's random for me; I can't figure out any pattern.  Just setting their Media Type to Video and Media Sub Type to the proper value (movie, tv show, etc) fixes it each time.

I haven't had this happen in a while as I'm no longer using MC for video.

At least you know how to fix it, as you said.  :)

I'm glad this thread is here.  Two video files I ripped this morning are nowhere to be found and I'd forgotten when I did the last time.
