Music playing sounds like a 45 rpm record at 33 rpm [Solved]

Yesterday I opened MC24 and attempted to play some songs.  Sadly, the music sounded like a 45 RPM record playing at 33 RPM.  Any ideas what could have caused this?

Hard to say.  Try power cycling everything, including any playback devices.

Everything was off.  I restarted the computer/dac/amp and tried again.  Still very slow.  In fact, I timed one minute and the song had only played 30 seconds of the track as noted on the countdown timer.

Try switching drivers in Audio Settings.  Direct Sound, for example.

Now I can't get the file to even start playing.  The file name and count down clock appear over the song list and it immediately goes into pause.

I have now tried to play an audio cd with the computer.
This time the "music" played from the cd (through JRiver)  but it was still running slow.

I've had this happen before (though not with Media Center) when the DAC did not switch sample rates correctly and so a higher sample rate output from the PC was being played like it was a lower sample rate by the DAC - or maybe it was the other way around.
I think it was caused by the buffer size being set to the wrong size for the device, so it didn't switch rates correctly.

I'd suggest checking that you are outputting a sample rate that your DAC supports. Perhaps use DSP Studio to set all outputs to 44.1 or 48kHz, and ensure that the buffer size is at least 10ms.

It was off.  I just unplugged the power cord to get a cold start.

Still running at half speed.

The only driver that seems to work is ASIO.  None of the others produce any sound.

In the interim I have installed MC25.  No improvement.

The driver may be the problem.  Where did you get it?  Normally it comes from the manufacturer. What is the DAC?

If the driver is 32 bit, you need to use the 32 bit version of MC.  It would be worth trying it.

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions.

DJLegba & marko, the problem was "tempo"  It got knocked down to -1!   That box is now unchecked so I won't make that silly mistake again.
