I just saw that the new Pi 4 is being released! Any thoughts on what software updates to Id Pi will be needed to run correctly? Wow, so much faster. And would more ram be helpful, or is standard good enough? For loading decoded files to use memory playback?

It looks like the old cases will not fit. Hmm, wonder if HiFi Berry will update their metal offerings. I hate to lose the nice little case, but the power upgrade is interesting. It's still so much less expensive than a prebuilt home theater PC or an audiophile solution...

Have two on order as well.

One to update the Raspbian-driven big screen in the GFs piano studio (weather, music news, pretty much running chrome in kiosk mode).

The other (of course) to (finally) start rolling with MC on smaller hardware. The new video hardware on the Pi is 'exciting'.

Patiently waiting for IdPi builds to support the Pi 4B.................

Because my Home Theater is 30 Ft away from my Office PC/Sound Server I need a PI 4 wired thru GB Ethernet.
I just got a Raspberry PI 4 w/4GB and installed it in my system.
After 4 hours of trying (being new to Linux) I was able to install the Linux version of MC25 to the raspberry pi 4.

I connected the HDMI output of the RB pi 4 to my Denon AVR-X45OOH Receiver. I set up MC25 to Multichannel 5.1 and it worked.
The only problem is the volume is rather low requiring and 80 setting on the receiver volume control for loud enough sound.
So, my receiver thru HDMI is using its DAC to deliver MULTI CHANNEL DSD.

I also installed the iFi Micro iDSD BL thru USB3 and to the CD input on the receiver.(If i want to use iFi micro DAC for Stereo Sound.)

I'm ready to purchase as soon as the pi4 version is ready. One question is does the Idpi support the popular I2S hats?

I've got a idnuc and so i haven't needed to worry about hats:)

The DAC's that have the onboard eerom to indentify themselves to the OS (raspbian buster in this case) will load the overlays automatically.
Others will need to play with their boot config file, note that this isn't hard but is not supported by us.

The Pi 4, usb c power problems aside, has a major heat problem which most likely will require fan based heat sinks to mitigate. I'll reference this recent article with Eben Upton of Raspberry https://www.theregister.co.uk/2019/09/03/eben_upton_pi_store/, which mentions that new firmware to adjust temperatures is still in beta.
My questions are:
Will these firmware updates be included with normal software updating via option 12 or require a new sd card to get?
Will the MC 25 take full advantage of a 4g memory for memory playback/background operations or be best on 1g/2g cards?

I bought a case for my Pi 4 that has a fan on it, and temps never really go above 42°C. It idles around 38°C most of the time with MC25 running constantly. Without the case with fan, it was idling around 60°C, yikes!

Also got a case with a small fan, its a tad bit noisy and I might want to look for a different one, but with some stick-on heatsinks as well its basically staying at 40C even OC'ed and at prolonged 100% load. Pretty neat.

Your results are about what several magazine and videol tests said about the temps. I use my IdPi mostly at night next to my bed with open backed headphones, so a silent operation is preferred. I'll wait and see if the new firmware updates make a difference to the temps before buying a new card.

For light use like music playback, you would probably get by fine with just sticking on some heat sinks. Its really sad that they don't include those yet since that would make a much better product (and on the 4 they are almost mandatory to reach anything close to specified performance), but you can get decent ones for a buck or two on the web anyway.

I agree, I have the Pi4 4GB model with the firmware revision, currently it idles at 54C using stick on passive heat sinks for the CPU, USB controller, and Ethernet controller chips.

Certainly heavy lifting tasks such as 4K video will require a fan to avoid throttling, but for music server purposes I think the passive cooling will do just fine. While 54C is significantly warmer than the 3 or 3B+ boards idle temps, it isn't a problem, throttling occurs at about 81C.

Once IdPi is released for the 4B board, I plan to use a case that is itself a heatsink, the KKSB aluminum, though I believe it only touches the CPU itself, so the other passive heat sinks will remain in place.

The bulk of the heating issue was initially due to the USB controller running downright HOT even with no USB devices attached. That was corrected via firmware update early on.

Still, there are no free lunches, the faster CPU and separate USB and Ethernet controllers along with additional RAM on the 4B will result in more heat, but it's manageable without a fan in most cases unless the ambient room temperature is already quite high to begin with.

You won't be able to update with option 12, it requires a whole new OS.
The only thing I can see working better on 4 gigs is generating thumbnails on the fly when using JRemote. Once they are all generated it shouldn't make any difference.
I'd suggest the 2 gig model though the extra gig probably isn't absolutely necessary, the OS has a larger footprint.

Pretty much everything is ready to go, I expect it will be shipping in the next few days.

Did some testing of the multichannel HDMI out. I tested this to a Sony amp. STR-DG720

It works with my test files, 48k 7.1 and 5.1.

You may need to re-order the channels in the IdPi's MC DSP studio for rear and front surround, using parametric equalization.

You need to use the first hdmi port for multichannel audio. It appears that there is an issue with the Pi 4B ALSA driver calculating channel offsets for the hardware device mapping between the first and second hdmi ALSA device descriptors. You can use the second hdmi port for a monitor if desired.
