Neil Young Archives and MC
« on: November 21, 2019, 12:12:52 am »

Is there a (simple) way to play Neil young Archives through MC? I have managed to make it work a few times but it refuses to be consistent, and there does not seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why it sometimes plays and sometimes does not.

If I start streaming from Neil young Archives and then open MC, MC shows up as playing 'lpc' and the tracks play through JRiver. What does 'lpc' actually mean? Might this be a way of making it work?

Funny, this seems to be working now:

1. Start streaming an album from Neil Young Archives
2. Open JRiver and wait a few seconds. Soon, 'lpc' shows up at the top and the tracks play through JRiver, providing the opportunity to EQ or whatever music playing at full 192/24 resolution, where available (confirmed by the indicator on my DAC).
Note: in Windows 10, I have MC listed as 'default device' in Control Panel > Sound

BUT (Big BUT) here's the thing. Sometimes, if you stop playing any track, you seem to lose the magic...and no sound when you hit 'play'. You'll have to exit JRiver and NYA and then repeat the sequence listed above. Still, if you like listening to whole hi-res (Neil Young) albums all the way through.....

You should be starting MC first, and leaving it running. Then start NYA streaming. That way the WDM driver is up and running before you try pushing audio to it.

In fact, if you have MC set as the default audio device, you should have MC starting with Windows so that it is always available to handle audio, from any source.

Yeah, tried that, but it seems very hit and miss. Most of the time, the track is streaming in NYA, but there is no sound through MC. The timer is showing that the track is playing in MC, but no sound, until I exit and start over.

Well, I would say fix that issue, and your other problems will probably go away.

It could be a problem with the configuration of the WDM in Windows Audio Shared Mode. I assume NYA streams only in Shared Mode, using a browser. There is no App for it that can use Exclusive Mode, right? ... Or maybe there is, if you are using the OraStream player?

The Windows Volume Mixer should show that it is playing to the WDM, and MC's Audio Path should show what it is receiving. Set the WDM Default Format in Shared Mode to something that always works.

If using the OraStream player in Exclusive Mode, then make sure the WDM can play what is being sent to it. The WDM driver supports both 16 and 24-bit audio up to 192kHz, and only supports PCM.

For example, using your current process, I could see what is happening as;

1. You start playback in NYA to Windows, where the default audio device (the WDM) isn't available. So Windows chooses to play to another audio device, if it can, but regardless the NYA player starts in Shared Mode, because it can't take Exclusive control of the default audio device.
2. You start MC. The WDM accepts the audio in Shared Mode, because that is how it started, and there is no trigger to switch NYA or Windows to Exclusive Mode.

So, if you are using the OraStream player, and it is set to play in Exclusive Mode, configure it to play in a format that the WDM supports. i.e. PCM in 16 or 24-bit up to 192kHz.

If the OraStream player streams in say FLAC native format, then that is a different situation altogether.
