Media Center 26 has stopped working
« on: December 23, 2019, 04:34:06 pm »

I upgraded today. The mjr file (Media Center26 Windows-485998.mjr) when run gives me a "Your License File is for a different product". I downloaded MC26.0.14 and installed. It never runs and throws a "Media Center 26 has stopped working" dialog box immediately.

Having been with Media Center for a long time, this is pretty disappointing.

Jim,
Perhaps I wasn't clear. I upgraded from MC 24. I had my license code for MC 24 when I upgraded. I got the new mjr files as a result of that. Crash on install. Iread the "restoring a license thread and got the SAME mjr file. Double clicking gives my the incorrect version message. I feel like I am missing a step since i would have expected to get an immediate MC26 download when I got the registration code for MC26. What is happening, more importantly why is the upgrade process for Media Center so Byzantine?

It's the opposite.  Install first, then run the Install Key (mjr file).  It's good for 14 days, then you must restore again.  All explained in the link.

I missed this.  Sorry.  If the install won't run, the most likely cause is antivirus software.  26.0.14 has seemed pretty stable.

What version of Windows?

Win 7 64. AV is Malwarebytes. Latest report shows no detections, no quarantines. Turned off Malwarebytes, still get "Media Center 26 has stopped working" dialog box.

Can I get a refund? I'l just stay w/ MC 24.

If it is the antivirus program (and it's likely), turning it off isn't enough.  Uninstall to be sure.

Make sure you have installed 26.0.14 or higher.

If you're using Win10, you must set Windows Defender correctly.  There is a thread here on it.

As I said, it's Windows 7, 64 bit and MC26.0.14. Since MC 24 runs fine, why would I expect Malwarebytes to cause an issue w/ MC 26?

Because MC26 is a separate application than MC24 and is fairly new and hasn't been out long, so AVs (e.g. Malwarebytes) can have issues with false positives or mess with MC26's executables or how MC26 runs. Some AV's heuristics scanning engine/features can also falsely flag MC26's executables or prevent them from working correctly.

So because MC24 is working with Malwarebytes or any other AV, the same may not be true for a newer, separate MC version, especially one that just released.

So what I am I supposed to do? I have turned off all MAlwarebytes protections then quit Malwarebytes. At that point there is no AV running. I then installed Media Center 26. After installation it still doesn't run and I get the same failed message. There are no AV warning or message to indicate that MC26 have been blocked. I am not going to uninstall my AV just to get MC26 to run.

Uninstall your AV. Disabling it may not be enough.

I'm not sure about why MC26 is crashing, but if you fix the "Your License File is for a different product" error message then MC26 may run correctly. Of course, the crash may be caused by something else, but let's address that bit later.

The "Your License File is for a different product" sounds like the old Windows Files Associations problem. In brief, when you installed MC26 it should have updated the File Association for *.mjr files to point to the MC26 Package Installer. In the past that has not always happened reliably for version upgrades. If this is the case here, when you double-click on the mjr file, the MC24 Package Installer tries to install the licence and fails with that message.

The fix is in the following thread. Just substitute MC24 and MC26 for references to MC21 and MC22/MC23 Licence. I wrote that post during the transition between when MC23 licences were being issued, which could be installed into later versions of MC22, and when MC23 actually became available. Hence the mixed reference to MC22/MC23 Licence.

Just an idea: If you have multiple major versions of MC installed (MC24, MC25, MC26 etc) then each of these applications may have their own setting to auto start on Windows startup. So you may unwittingly have more that one MC program running at the same time, and trying to access your PCs resources. The fix is to open all prior versions of MC, disable their auto start in Options, and then reboot. i.e. make sure that only the latest version of MC has auto start enabled.

An upgrade to the new version (MC25 to MC26, for example) should automatically set the old version's Media Server off and the new version's on.  I don't think I've ever seen this fail.

Does the newer version have to start to do this? MC26 has never started successfully. Media Center does not autostart on my machine. The .mjr file shows Media Center 26 in the Files associations Details. Still get the incorrect version message.
