Media Center 26 installation will not upgrade MC 25
« on: April 03, 2020, 11:45:43 am »

Hi,

Just bought an upgrade for my master license from 25 to 26. Received the email with the license. Installed v26, install ran fine, got new 26 icon on my desktop. Double-click reg file and received mesage saying license was successfully installed.
Run Media Centre.... still version 25...?

Checked properties of desktop icon and it was running version 26 executable. Check hard drive and the MC files all appear to be version 26 files.

Tried new download from forum post (latest build)... same thing
Tried several time, but always when run it is 25.

I have now used media centre to back up my library... just in case.

Why does it not upgrade? Do i need to uninstall v25 and then install v26 and restore my library?

yes, installed the V26 program files, (more than once). Installation reports successful.

Then installed 26 licence, again install reports successful... run application, V25 appears.

Double check the name of the download and the name of the desktop link before launching.

If it's really MC25, then it's possible something is blocking installation of MC26.  Antivirus, for example.

Each major Media Center version has its own installation so installing Media Center 26 doesn't replace Media Center 25. If you're using any of the Windows startup options in MC25 (like Media Server or even Media Center) when Windows starts, you might want to go into MC25's settings and disable those. It kinda sounds like MC25 has the file association for the .mjr license file. If that's the case, ignore licensing MC26 for now, instead start Media Center 26 from the shortcut in the start menu and see if MC26 starts then.

Just double check make sure you're starting Media Center 26 (and make sure Media Center 25 isn't running if that's what you desire). Once your MC26 settings and whatnot is where you want them, you can uninstall MC25 if you don't need it anymore (and no, uninstalling MC25 won't affect your MC26 install) and try using the .mjr license file if MC26 isn't registered (of course, you could manually register MC26 by copying and pasting the registration key when it asks).

Thanks for your help. I now have a functioning V26.

I had been looking directly at the hard disk and had had not looked at the Windows Start menu. (Dumb mistake after 34 years of working in IT). There were two entries, one for 25 one for 26. However I knew there was no installation on my hard disks of 25.
When I uninstalled using the V25 entry on the Widows Start menu it uninstalled the version 26 I had installed on hard disk. Could it be that there was some corruption of information about which version was installed and where? (Does Media Center keep info like that in the registry?)

Anyway, with both the desktop icon and Start menu entry now not working because the v26 files were gone, I had no choice but to reinstall V26. Once that completed, updated desktop icon and Start menu entry now work and fire-up V26. Which is properly licensed without having to apply the license again.

Not sure what happened, but I'm glad to have a working Media Center 26. Thanks for your support and help.
