Audio CD ripping on Linux versions
« on: May 14, 2020, 03:17:04 pm »

Is there a rip audio from CD available in any of the linux versions?  I recently upgraded my MC21 master license to MC26 and tried the Linux version for the 1st time.  I see no 'rip' option.  On another thread in this Linux section, I found another thread where it was mentioned there was no rip like there is on the windows version. Is this true?  If so, why?

It's on the to-do list. CD ripping on Windows relies on Windows components which don't exist on Linux. So they'd probably have to be developed from scratch which probably isn't an 'easy task'. That said, there *could* potentially be a "shortcut" in adding support if something like libparanoia/cdparanoia/cdrdao could be utilized.

That's news to me.

Yeah, Bob touched on that back in late 2018 when somebody else asked about it: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,118351.0.html

I'm running MC26 on Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on a NUC10.

I really like abcde to rip CDs to flac, it runs from the terminal, but couldn't be simpler.

it couldn't be any easier:

enter "abcde -o flac" in a terminal and it rips a CD to flac (two stages, first it writes the files to .wav, then converts them to your desired format). The link below describes all.

Would be terrific if MC could somehow encapsulate or directly interact with abcde
