MC26 on Ubuntu 18.04 Freezes
« on: July 26, 2020, 06:22:00 pm »

MC26 on Ubuntu 18.04 works normally if a bit sluggishly. My music collection is upwards of 7TB.

If you don't interact with it for somewhere between a few minutes to hours it freezes. No response. Won't close.

If MC26 is terminated via System Monitor it will close. Restarting, it works with the same issue.

When it gets sluggish you might try checking it's process to see if it's running out of some resource.
top from a command line can be useful.

You could try turning off thumbnailing to see if that's causing an issue.

MC26 doesn't get sluggish - it is sluggish. Opens immediately but doesn't respond to scrolling or playing for seconds. Play, pause and track change are noticeably not snappy ever.

This is on an octo-core 3 GHz I7-9700 machine with 32 GB of RAM and large drives nowhere near full.

EFI, Boot & LUKS/LVM System are on separate partitions on a 256 GB NVMe drive.

Root, Root 2 (for future OS tryout), Home, Tmp, Var & Swap (@ 2X RAM) are on separate LVM/LUKS partitions on a second NVMe 1 TB drive. Both NVMe drives have 10 GB unallocated space.

Largely FLAC with some mp3 music files are on a 10 TB WD Red rotating rust drive.

I have Conky running on the desktop and never exceed 15% of system resources - memory or processor. This iron is loafing with no noticeable issues on any other programs.

What is a rust drive?

Turn off audio analysis.

What is a rust drive?

Spinning Rust. A HDD.

What DE are you running and what version of it?. I used to have problems with gnome, with not only JRiver, but *every* window that was customized entirely. It fixed itself over time. I'd recommend you try to upgrade to Ubuntu 20.04 or try a different DE and see if either of those fixes the issue for you too.

Definitely not seeing this in Ubuntu 20.04, Debian, Arch Linux, Fedora or Linux Mint.

Gnome 3.28.2 and I like it.

2020.4.1 out on 08/06/2020. I'll upgrade then and see.

However the plot thickens. I have determined it only happens when DSP Studio Analyzer is running. I don't yet know about other DSP Studio applications. Or is DSP Studio all the same application?

Frankly, the thumbnail display and the Analyzer are the only reasons I pay for JRiver. It is literally the only non-open source software I run -  which says something about the developers I believe.

The Analyzer lets you see how the recording was mastered. Look at 'I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry' and then 'Suzie Q'. Revealing. Remarkable.

Thanks for the interest and input. Will keep thread posted.

DSP Studio is part of MC.
It's interesting that you get the issue when the analyzer is running.
The windowing while that's up is pretty complex and I don't normally leave it running myself.
I'll do some testing and perhaps some other people using different desktops can give it a try as well.
I generally run XFCE for it's simplicity and lightweight footprint.
What's your video card?

As stated above Analyzer is a main reason I pay for Media Center as opposed to say perfectly functional open source Clementine. I not only always want it running but find fault with the lack of integration with the main MC pane.

I don’t see any way to open or minimize them in unison. Analyzer also does not remember its screen position. Analyzer displayed audio levels could use some work. None of these were issues under Windows (I’ve had a complete break with Win at version 10 as it has arguably become malware.)

I realize the Linux implementation  is relatively immature. I was running the Windows version under Wine until MC was actually in a trustworthy Linux repository. I only accept software from well vetted repositories; those being a main reason you don’t hear about 17 year old Linux critical vulnerabilities.

I have no video cards anymore but use the on processor video. I find it power and heat saving and quite wonderful that except for gamers the money, space and resources need no longer be expended. With super thin SATA cables, NVMe on the motherboard and no video card the case is marvelously spare and uncluttered.

I can run my network HDTV card, an mkv movie in VLC, MC26 and Firefox simultaneously while carrying on routine uses such as LibreOffice at 1080P with plenty of headroom. Nothing stutters or hesitates except MC26s slight unresponsiveness (Which does not improve with everything else closed).

Watchin’ TV with the radio on. Over-provisioning rules.

All this in one box. That I have lived to see the day ...

I’m sure the developers are hard at work and all will be well by and by. Meanwhile we troubleshoot.

MC seems sluggish on KDE - as in take a number, I'll get back to you, sort of sluggish - slow to open, slow to close.  I had XFCE DE installed briefly whilst testing Endeavor OS, and MC seemed reasonably responsive then.

And a few other things. Step forward and back ceases to function until a new track is manually selected. There are a lot of little issues.

Meanwhile, I am playing 'A Day in the Life' in 6.1 surround sound flawlessly. The Analyzer is beautiful except while reporting a peak level of 80% most tracks are clipping off the top of the display. Not a bobble to be seen though.

There should be a manual adjustment or automatic normalization.
