TiVo HMO and Media Center Instructions
« on: April 14, 2003, 10:23:57 am »

To use TiVo's HMO to listen to your Media Center music or look at your Media Center Photos, do:

0) These apply to Media Center 9.0.147 and higher. Please update to the latest version of Media Center if running a previous version.

1) If you haven't already done so. load the TiVo desktop (available on TiVo's website: http://www.tivo.com/).

2) Exit TiVo Publisher if you have it running.

3) Start the TiVo Beacon service if it is not running. (control panel->Admin Tools->Services).  It should be running by default if you installed the TiVo desktop.

4) Start Media Server (from Media Center: tools->More Tools->Media Server). Double click on the Media Server icon in the task bar. Click settings->options. Under network settings, choose automatic. Under TIVo HMO choose "Support TiVo HMO on Port 8080 (with beacon on port 2190)" and select "Support all audio formats".

5) Click OK. Click Yes in the message box showing "Media Server is connected. Do you want to reconnect?". If you don't see this message box, then click "File->Share". You must restart the server after any changes to the options, and after the TiVo beacon is running.

6) If you are showing the status window, you should see:

...sharer ready to accept connections
...Started auto response thread on 5556
...TiVo HTTP ready for connections.

7) It is not recommended to have the TiVo in shuffle mode while playing Media Center playlists that have "Sort: random". While this works and does the logical thing, the logical thing is not intuitive at all.

Comments:

1) You do not need TiVo's Desktop if you are using Media Server TiVo on port 80, or if you do not need autodetection of Media Server TiVo. We strongly recommend installing the desktop and using TiVo Beacon.

2) Our server will run alongside the TiVo Publisher in the future. Right now, this probably won't work.

3) If the TiVo Beacon is not running, Media Server will run its own version of the Beacon. This lite version does not have the autodetect capability.

4) You can also manually choose the Media Server port (under options->network), but do NOT choose 2190 or 8080. You can also choose to run TiVO HMO on port 80 (make sure this does not conflict with the Media Server port (under options->network) but you must then enter the IP address of Media Server on the TiVo (no autodetect) and it make take a long time (minutes) for TiVo to identify your server.

A question concerning:

Quote
16. Fixed: Media Server keeps stats on TiVo connections too.

Is this the MC stats (last played, etc) or the MS stats (under Statistics menu option), or are they the same thing?

John,

I see your comment about random playlists and shuffle mode -- but any updates on the disconnect between the random playlist shown vs. played when not in shuffle mode?

See http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1050098709 for more details.

Thanks,

My Tivo is not detecting the media server.  I followed these instructions to the letter.  I did notice that I am not getting the message regarding ...TiVo HTTP ready for connections.   Here are the message that I do get.

On the TiVo, try manually entering the IP address of the Media Server.

It works when I manually enter the address.  I was hoping to have it detect it because I use dynamic IP addresses.  The server was working (on 8080 with the Tivo Beacon service on 2190) when I had 9.0.149 running but since I have upgraded to MC 9.0.152 it no longer works that way.

Correction:  It is no longer working when I manually specify it either...ugh.

I noticed with the builds from today, that some improvements were noted in the TiVo Sildeshows.  I did notice that pictures are no longer squeezed, but they also are now not showing fullscreen either.  Now, there is black space around all sides of a picture (1600x1200).  The same picture shows fullscreen with TiVo publisher.

Hopefully, this can be worked out.  Alternatively, if TiVo publisher can run side by side with MC Server, then that could always be used for pictures.

Thanks,

[moving amwoza's post here]

For some reason my Media Server for Tivo HMO has stopped working. I have it configured to run on port 8080 with the Tivo Beacon service.

I was running MC 9.0.152 and I noticed when I would start the Media Server I wasn't getting the "TiVo HTTP ready for connections" message in the status window.

After double and triple checking my configuration, I thought it might have been an issue with MC 9.0.152 so I did a complete uninstall and went back to MC 9.0.151.

I started the server and then the message returned and my Tivo was detecting it ok.  Here is the status when it is working:

04/17/03 00:57:55 - sharer starting
04/17/03 00:57:55 - Initializing server.
04/17/03 00:57:55 - Server initialized
04/17/03 00:57:55 - sharer ready to accept connections
04/17/03 00:57:55 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
04/17/03 00:57:55 - TiVo HTTP ready for connections

Of course I had to reimport my media because my library was empty again after the uninstall and re-install.  So after bringing all my media back in, I restarted the Media Server again and now the "TiVo HTTP ready for connections" is missing again and my Tivo does not detect it.  Here is the status when it is not detected:

04/17/03 01:02:07 - Stopped auto response thread.
04/17/03 01:02:08 - sharer starting
04/17/03 01:02:08 - Initializing server.
04/17/03 01:02:08 - Server initialized
04/17/03 01:02:08 - sharer ready to accept connections
04/17/03 01:02:08 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.

I stopped and restarted it a couple more times to be sure it wasn't a quirk, but something is definately goofy with this:

04/17/03 01:02:30 - Stopped auto response thread.
04/17/03 01:02:30 - sharer starting
04/17/03 01:02:30 - Initializing server.
04/17/03 01:02:30 - Server initialized
04/17/03 01:02:30 - sharer ready to accept connections
04/17/03 01:02:30 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
04/17/03 01:03:07 - Stopped auto response thread.
04/17/03 01:03:22 - sharer starting
04/17/03 01:03:22 - Initializing server.
04/17/03 01:03:22 - Server initialized
04/17/03 01:03:22 - sharer ready to accept connections
04/17/03 01:03:22 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm guessing that there is a conflict that creates a problem if you're running TiVo Publisher at the same time.  Try stopping it ("Pause").

Hi amwoza,

I think I found the problem. Try this:
1) Start Media Center and make sure you can play a song.
2) Start Media Server, and from Media Center connect to Medai Server (it doesn't matter if they are on the same machine). Make sure you can play.
3) Now try on the TiVo. I think steps 1 and 2 will show a problem that isn't reported correctly in  step 3.

Let me know (and I fixed step 3 reporting).

Still not detected by Tivo DVR.  Like I said in my post above (copied over from another thread by JimH), this works perfectly in v9.0.150 but as soon as I upgrade to anything higher it stops working.

Hi amwoza,

There is a build coming out in just a few minutes that has a better error message. Give it a try, and then copy-n-paste the whole log here.

In another thread...
http://www.musicex.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.cgi?board=beta;action=display;num=1050549736
I was mentioning the fact that I cannot get TiVo to connect to the Media Server (1.0.163) under any circumstances now.  I took JimH's advice and rebooted and manually started Media Server with the same net result:
Quote
04/17/03 10:04:51 - sharer starting
04/17/03 10:04:51 - Initializing server.
04/17/03 10:04:51 - Server initialized
04/17/03 10:04:51 - sharer ready to accept connections
04/17/03 10:04:52 - Started auto response thread on port 5556.
04/17/03 10:05:32 - received a connection
04/17/03 10:05:32 - ready for another connection
04/17/03 10:05:32 - private sharing thread started
04/17/03 10:05:32 - Client tried to download an unsupported file type.
04/17/03 10:05:32 - sharing thread exiting

I tried to reinstall Media Center XX48 (last known good version), but the library barfed.  I've now re-installed XX52 and am seeing these problmes.  Any ideas?

Thanks.

Additional Note:  I just tried this again after disabling Norton Internet Security with the same failure...

Also, when I stop sharing, I see the following message:
Quote
04/17/03 10:14:39 - bad port <>
04/17/03 10:14:39 - tcp_write failed error=10038
04/17/03 10:14:39 - bad version

Related???

BTW - rebooted TiVo - no change.

Hi J,

OK, I see this. I'll work on it. I also have fixed Media Server so it can run side-by-side with TiVo Publisher, but this is not a solution :)

I did notice that I am expanding small images, and TiVo publisher doesn't. The doc's I have seem to indicate that images should be expanded, but docs change. Do you have any feeling on this? That is: should I display a 100x100 picture as 100x100 or 432x432 (TV screen size, if you are
on a monitor, it'll be bigger, but the same resollution).

Thanks,

j

John,
The new "verbose" build solved this (latest) problem, and put me back to square one...the dialogue box that pops up on the PC.  I must click OK before music starts streaming to the TiVo.  I've captured the box here:

So, if I want to listen to more than a single song on the TiVo, I have to keep running back and forth clicking OK on the PC!  Interestingly, pictures are served up perfectly.  Help!

Hi Marc, the next build will have a fix for the message box problem. In the meantime, just don't play songs with a '#' in the name :)

I don't know why the "verbose" build solved your other problem. Just check the error message if it comes back (check your libraries, I bet you have a bad one).
