Search slow and creates stuttering and very high CPU
« on: October 06, 2020, 12:53:59 pm »

The search functions is since version 27 extremely slow and results in a very high CPU, the music stutters while I type into the search field.
I had this problem once in a previous version and was able to solve the problem after telling MC not to search the lyrics as well.
I've been looking for a long time now, but can no longer find it at MC 27.
Does anyone have a tip?

Could you send a library backup to matt at JRiver along with instructions about what to search for?  Thanks.

Certainly I can do an upload but I need an email address for Matt and the backup is nearly 100 GB big and can't be uploaded in the normal way.
And the symptoms are as I them already described. If I type something into the search field music is stuttering, I need 3 seconds for every letter and the activity monitor shows that the CPU (that's normally is inconspicuous) is up to or more than 100 percent.

Your library is 100 GB compressed?  How many files?  I'm matt at jriver dot com.

Make a backup. Send the zip file. It's just the database Matt needs.

Woooo. Stop what you are doing aliciaviola!

Jim touched on it, by saying Matt just needs the database. But to be clear, what you need to do is run the "File > Library > Back Up Library" function and email the zip file created to Matt.

Your Library refers to the MC Database, and not all of your media files. There is no way your MC Library is 100GB, compressed or not. You must be talking about your media files, and Matt doesn't need those.

Terminology...

Of course MB and not GB!!! Sorry about that. 98 MB for 253486 files/ 5,8 TB
But that's too big, also, for an attachment. I sent a message to Matt with a Google drive link for the backup.

Thanks for the library.

You have 253,486 files, so it's just a lot.

If you make search look at fewer fields, it would help.  Options > Library & Folders > Manage Library Fields > Turn off default search for comment, filename, description, and any others you don't need.

I also found Silicon Dust running over and over, which was slowing things down.  That will be fixed in a coming build.

Yes, quite a lot - and it will be more in the future. Your advice to minimise the search fields didn't help. Up to version 27 I didn't have a problem, at least in this field.
There are only two action when the stuttering happens: while writing to the search field and when I quit MC. It must be something different. A problem with my Mac? it's not a new one: Mac Pro Mid 2010/ 2,8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon/ 48 GB 1066 MHz DDR3/ Mojave 10.14.6 (18G6032)/ Graphic: Radeon RX 570 4 GB/ 1 TB SSD as start and system volume + four HDD (two 3 TB, two 4 TB).

I hope that you can find a solution.
For the moment I am going back to MC 26 that doesn't have the problem.
There are not so many new things with MC 27 - save the TV options and these unfortunately don't support my EyeTV.

Now I am back to the latest build of MC 26 and glad that I kept it on a disc.
I imported the library from MC 27 and all is ok, no problem at with the search field.
Of course I would prefer to work with MC 27 and newest builds.

Something that you changed in the last version seems to help.
Now the search function works fast and doesn't disturb the playing any more.
Thanks!
