ATSC 3.0 & SiliconDust HDHomeRun HDHR5-4K Tuner
« on: March 15, 2021, 11:17:54 am »

Does JRiver Media Center 27 support recording and playback of programs in the new ATSC 3.0 format? I'm using the tuner listed in this post subject and have been able to pull in 4 local ATSC 3.0 stations using the SiliconDust app, but MC27 doesn't seem to even see these stations on a channel scan.

I've got this tuner, but my area has no ATSC 3.0 stations yet. I am getting all the local ATSC 1.0 channels in MC. Are you at least getting those in MC?

Yes, all the ATSC 1.0 stations are received and record with no issues. But ATSC 3.0 seems like it will complicate things in MC27. Audio is AC-4 and video is H.265, potentially a show-stopper.

A quick update...

I'm getting the broadcast schedule data from Perc Data, one of the TV setup choices in MC27. The Perc Data website has a report of channels for which data is provided, and this report doesn't currently list any of the ATSC 3.0 stations. That seems likely to be problematic for the JRiver software. I've reached out to Perc Data for more info.

Sorry.  I should have been more specific.  This:  ... "ATSC 3.0 seems like it will complicate things in MC27. Audio is AC-4 and video is H.265 ..."

We have not started working on ATSC 3.0, partly because in cities where we live, no TV station broadcast in ATSC 3.0.  So if I have to guess (not knowing if our existing code is sufficient), the answer is no, it is not supported in MC27.  We can handle H265 video, but probably not AC-4 audio (Hendrik knows better on this one), not to mention whether we need to add any code for the transport stream itself, or any special handling involved in DirectShow.

Yaobing is right, AC-4 is not supported. H265 video is also used for basically all other UHD/4K video everywhere, that wouldn't be a problem.

Just to throw my 2 cents into the mix. I received a Flex tuner today and have it set up. It's doing a fantastic job with the ATSC 1.0 stations, including a station with a transmitter 100 miles from my home. While I have a decent sized yagi, it's hanging inside my garage from the ceiling, and most stations signals are coming in through a portion of the home structure.

Problem: while Seattle has seven ATSC 3.0 stations on the air, right now JRiver is seeing all of their ATSC 1.0 signals but one. King TV (virtual channel 5, RF channel 25) transmitter is 26 miles away, and I could probably see it from my home if it was lit up better. I can pick it up on most TVs with only a paperclip as the antenna. JRiver is seeing 5.2, .3 and .4, but not .1. When I use the HD app on my Shield or Roku, the box does see 5.1 and it's viewable on those apps. Of course,  the only device that gives me audio on the ATSC 3.0 channels is the Roku Ultra 4800, since it supports AC-4 and sends it to my AVR as 5.1 PCM.

OK, before hitting post, I did some more searching. It seems that JRiver placed it down as channel 61, which of course would be an unknown local channel so there was no data and it was so far down the list I didn't notice it. Once I edited the channel list and reloaded the channel guide, it was all there. No idea why that bogus channel number was assigned, but it's all good now.

If I can provide any assistance with your ATSC 3.0 development, please let me know.
