XML? Long Time Owner, Not Frequent User
« on: April 26, 2021, 09:52:07 am »

Hi, just downloaded my first Media Center in years.  Can I assume it can't read the music.app database?  In which case I wish I hadn't upgraded. :-)

If your media file tags are up-to-date importing into a fresh Library is pretty fast and straight forward.

Back up in the old version. Restore in the new version.

Thanks Jim.  Old version and new version of what?

Note: I don't have old version of either iTunes/Music or Media Center.  Why would I? :-)

Check out my PC-era tag underneath!!!

Well, if you had an older version of Media Center with a library you would still consider usable then you could just do that. Back up in the old MC version and restore in the new one.
Assuming your only up-to-date music is in Apple Music (iTunes) the it might be prudent to create a new Library in the new MC installation. Assuming your media files are in a folder called /Path/to/music you can then do this:
In the top menu select /File/Library/Import >> Import Single Folder >> Select <Next> >> Browse to /Path/to/music and select it. I am also always analyzing the Audio files on import (that's an option you can choose before  importing).
That should import all the music in just a minute or so, depending on how many files you have and how big they are. You can then start updating tags if necessary.

On my fresh M1 MacBook Pro the library is a database.  On my 2017 iMac its a folder of files.

Oh well. :-)

Did I just answer my own question?  Import from 2017 iMac, then can Media Center on my new M1 MacBook just access the DB that the iMac created?

If on your 2017 Mac you have a Media Center Library then you can back that up with the old version of MC and restore with the new version on the new M1 mini
