JRiver sync to phone may have deleted photos
« on: May 02, 2021, 12:29:50 am »

I think JRiver just deleted several months worth of photos on my phone.

I am doing a project where I am syncing 282 GB of music and videos from my PC onto my Android phone's SanDisk 512GB Extreme microSDXC UHS-I Memory Card. I started the sync. It estimated it would take 3.5 hours, which seemed a little optimistic. When I came back a few hours later it seemed to be done. But my card on my phone had vanished; it was gone looking at it on the phone and also via looking at it on my computer. I rebooted the phone. No luck. I unplugged the USB cable and re-plugged it in. Now the card shows up, but it looks like it has been reformatted. There are only songs from A thru C. The Android folder structure is on the card, but it is empty. Mostly, it was a bunch of photos that are now gone. I took it out of the phone and used an adapter to see it on my computer. Same.

Does syncing in JRiver 27.0.85 normally cause reformatting of the card? Nothing warned me this was about to happen.

And is there any way to restore my photos?

This is really frustrating.

MC doesn't reformat anything on your phone.

Thanks Jim, that is what I guessed.

Update: Using a card reader and my PC, I used Recuva to rescue many of the images. Of course they were unorganized with random names, but after a bunch of time spent it is better than nothing. The (deep) scan of the SD card took like 9 hours. Next, I think I will reboot everything and try again. I have a blank slate now. ;-)

I still have no idea what happened. Technology voodoo?

Will update...

@comox

Thanks! So I am not alone. I have a lot of media files to sync. I was hoping for better. I may reassess this endeavor.

Anyone else have experience with syncing to an Android?

Those aren't the same problem.

Perhaps not, though the OP in the other thread describes a similar thing that happened to me. JRiver seemed to think it was done when it had only done a small fraction. And it had stopped. My situation is arguably worse, as there was loss of data.

Again, I know it can be anything, not necessarily JRiver. That's the nature of tech. And unfortunately I wasn't watching when the problem happened or else I could describe what I saw.

His was a crash.  You didn't mention a crash.  Just a hang.

I just spent a few minutes searching Google for similar problems.  There's a lot written.  You might want to read.
