Feature request - Fullscreen mac
« on: May 09, 2021, 07:48:41 am »

Hi.

I asked for this going into the last build I bought (23), and the respons was that you where working on geting JRiver to run in full screen mode. Is there any chance that this will be implemented in v.28?

Did you try a recent build of MC27?

Yes, was running it before I did the post. There is still no fullscreen mode. Why do you ask, JimH?

Perhaps you could explain what you mean better, because MC on Mac DOES support fullscreen properly in Theater View and Display View modes.

It does not support it in Standard View, and the "green orb" does basically Maximize/Restore (which is, honestly, my preference and I dislike the default mode of the green orb on macOS generally). Is that what you mean?

Well, yes that's just it.

The Standard View and the display view is only a maximize button and not a fullscreen option. The maximize option is ok on a Windows based computer where the default layout is one desktop, but for a OS like macOS that is optimized for quick flows with separate fullscreens, then the need to make a separate desktop to run a maximized version of an app feels like running an app from 2010, and it breaks the "flow". Also when playing a video in "fullscreen" mode in display view this locks up the whole desktop, so why not provide the modern way of mac fullscreen? It would be so much better!

Now I have to open the app, create a new desktop, move the app over to that desktop an maximize it. And if I hit the topline it goes back into windowed mode and need to be maximized again. You also loose screen realestate because of the topbar that is always presented in maximized view.

Theater View is fine on a media center computer, but for running on the desktop/laptop it is also not good. And when I tried that now and stopped playing a video the whole view did not respond. Only showed the theater view with the buttons, but could not press on anything. Also going to mission control all the other windows for MC was gray and I had to terminate the app.

So I guess that's a no to the question about fullscreen functionality?

They're currently working on MC28 in Beta. My recommendation would be to wait for the first builds of that to come out and ask on the board they make for it.

I, personally, never use the Mac "green orb" fullscreen mode. But I can see how it is useful for people on laptops, so probably worth implementing. MC on Windows does have a very similar mode, that I think could fulfill the need, if ported and connected to the Green Orb.

If they add support for it, I hope it's optional and disabled by default. I personally don't like the function of the green full screen button in other macOS apps - I prefer the green spotlight button to function as a toggle for maximized and windowed mode.

I mean, technically, when implemented properly, they're all optional. Hold Option and click them and they do the thing that you (and I) usually want.

I wish there was an Options Write command you could do to reverse it permanently on your system, but thus far, no such thing exists.

My gut instinct is that, if they implement it, they should follow the system standard and make it on by default. Otherwise you're fighting everyone's muscle memory. Though, an internal Option to "swap modes" (Option-Click on Green Orb does fullscreen, standard click acts like it does currently) would be nice.

As a Mac user and 9yr customer of MC, I'd like to add an up-vote +10 for @tdipower and his feature request. MC's implementation on the Mac suffers for this omission. One thing the thread discussion lacks as I type this (28 May) is that the Mac users with trackpads on laptops, or in my case the Magic Trackpad on my 27" iMac, quickly get used to swipe gestures that make navigating desktops and full screen apps a breeze.  I never use a PC/Mac mouse. Ever. Separate desktops and full screen apps behave in the same way in terms of navigating them. A truly native full screen MC would just hang out to the "virtual right" of whatever I'm working on. Four finger swipe to the left and it's instantly in front of me. Four finger swipe up and I can pick one, or drag an app to that desktop, rearrange the desktops, etc. It's reflexive. I'll have as many as 6 full-screen app/desktop combos running on any given day. Ironically, many are Microsoft apps like PPT and Excel. Once you start using the feature it becomes something you *really* miss when it's not available.

MC is the only app I have running 24/7 on a Mac that does not perform like all other apps in this regard. The Windows implementation of multiple desktops is good. My wife has a nice high end Dell Windows desktop setup I mess with all the time for various things.  But it's not on par with the Mac combined w/ a trackpad. If you're using a mouse on a Mac then this will be lost on you. (Yeah, I have a Magic Mouse too. Good but not the same. Currently covered in dust.)  The green orb should just function like everything else. Gimme a full screen app like all the others. If MS Office implemented it on their Mac apps then why not MC?

I also vote for this feature request.
--> Please implement full screen in the same way as all other Mac apps.

Yes!  I've been posting on the forum for many years asking for this feature. It's a huge issue if you want to use MC for parties so that it doesn't keep getting hidden or closed.  Someone explained a few years ago that MC doesn't use any of the standard Mac display libraries and does everything in its own code which is why this isn't a simple change as it should have been.

If I started using MC for video, this full-screen issue would be even more important since the app really must be in full-screen for nice video playback.
