Windows 11 Hardware Requirements
« on: June 27, 2021, 09:50:16 am »

I just read that Windows 11 will require UEFI and TPM 2.0. I'm just learning what these are exactly, I know UEFI (and usually disable it in order to dual boot via BIOS), but am not familiar with TPM.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Trusted_Platform_Module

Wikipedia lists TPM 2.0 as originating in 2019.

Does this requirement really mean all laptops and motherboards pre 2019 won't run Windows 11?

You can download the PC Health Check tool from here https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/windows-11 to check if your pc will run Windows 11

Thanks for that link!  I needed TPM but then I searched on my BIOS and enabling something called PTT made me eligible :)

Yep, that is their term for fTPM (look for that option in BIOS if you have a newer AMD CPU).

Ok, thank you! I take back all the many curses I directed at Microsoft when I thought I would have to buy a new machine :).

It looks like PTT is a feature on my Thinkpad 450s firmware, which is a 2015 computer, so some older hardware is eligible:

"Security Chip
Selection
• Discrete TPM
• Intel PTT
If you select Discrete TPM, you can use a
discrete TPM chip with TPM 1.2 mode. If you
select Intel PTT, you can use Intel Platform
Trusted technology (PTT) with TPM 2.0 mode.
Note:
Intel PTT can be used with Windows 8 or later
operating system."

It looks like I will have to convert my Windows installation from MBR to GPT. I found a tutorial on how to do this without reinstalling Windows, but I can't vouch for it yet:

https://www.windowscentral.com/how-convert-mbr-disk-gpt-move-bios-uefi-windows-10

I also will have to do the same with my Linux installation, which is on a second hard drive:

https://serverfault.com/questions/963178/how-do-i-convert-my-linux-disk-from-mbr-to-gpt-with-uefi#

Both of these look like they could really mess things up if something goes wrong. I have had success in the past using "dd" in linux to make full disk images, so I'll do that before I try either of these tutorials.

https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/unix-linux-dd-create-make-disk-image-commands/

Thanks for the help researching this. I'll try these out on another day - maybe a rainy day, with better sleep, and no small kids are running around the computer making demands!!!

Cheers and have a good weekend.

MS wants you to believe that you have to have the latest hardware to run the upcoming Windows11...that's not true: As long your machine is TPM 2.0 and UEFI secure boot enabled, chances are good that It will run Win11.  There's now a nice handy tool on github telling you what *could* prevent a successful installion. Check:

https://github.com/rcmaehl/WhyNotWin11/releases

An old dev laptop (thinkpad t440s, i5-4300U) of mine will be receiving win11 dev builds in the dev ring.

I will be reporting if necessary.

Even if you have not been a MS insider before June 24th (deadline by MS), there *seems* to be a workaround. Check:

All CPUs from the last 5+ years or so support "firmware TPM" (Intel PTT, or AMD fTPM), and any prebuilt Windows 10 PCs since 2015 or so have already required a TPM module to be certified for Windows 10, so the number of systems that wont work will be far smaller than some media has initially been reporting. Some DIY systems will likely just need to enable TPM in the BIOS. Worst case, some even older system can buy a TPM module, which should work.

That doesn't really help you because it'll stop working with the final Windows 11 version.

IMO its not the TMP requirements that will prevent a good number of users from upgrading is the specific processor requirements:

So, my 4 yr old Core i7-7700K doesn't appear in that list, meaning Windows 11 won't run on this system?

That will be a "Yes" then... Wow!

Runs now Win11 pro, b22000.51 (no tricks, no hacks - just downloaded/installed through WinUpdate) - subjectively snappier than the last Win10 dev build.

Don't feel too special there marko, I got snagged by that as well.  Neither my Server, my workstation or my clients are up gradable.  I almost felt bad until I thought of the time I spent un-bloating and securing Win10

The Windows 11 requirements state that only Intel Core 8000 series (Coffee Lake) and newer, Ryzen 2000 series (Zen+) and newer CPUs are compatible with Windows 11. Meaning anyone with Intel Core 7000 series, like the 7700K, won't be able to offically run Windows 11. Also means anyone running first generation Ryzen is also out in the cold.

Their justification for this and the secure boot + TPM 2.0 requirement is security. Which I guess makes sense, but it's still going to piss a lot of people off.

Meh, Windows 10 isn't going anywhere anytime soon. It'll be EOL 2025 and MS will probably still push out critical security stuff after that (wasn't that long ago that they patched Win7). What's the cross section of people running older hardware that just HAVE to HAVE Windows 11...these pissed off people?

Given Microsoft's recent quality track record, it'd be wise for people to take time upgrading. Let Microsoft [beta] test on a limited set of [new] hardware before introducing more variables into the mix. In time, I wouldn't be surprised if these requirements loosen up.

2x on the recommendation to use WhyNot11.  The s/w is a lot better at explaining system readiness for a potential Windows 11 upgrade than the msft tool is.
