Author Topic: JRiver 28.0.32 - Mac Mini M1, high swap & kernel_task CPU usage after a while  (Read 4108 times)

Hi!

I just recently bought the M1 Mac Mini (16GB/512SSD version) and i've been looking for a good music library application for macos.
I found JRiver interesting and I've been trying it out today but I'm having some issues with its resource usage.

My library is not that large (around 8000 tracks, all FLAC files, from a SMB network share) but after importing it and using JRiver for about 20-30 minutes I've noticed my system becoming less and less responsive.

After investigating I've found that my swap file usage have increased from 0 into ~2GB range and kernel_task CPU usage starts having spikes. As time goes on the system is less and less responsive eventually forcing me to do a reboot to continue using my computer (not running anything else besides jriver and a web browser with 2-3 tabs open - without jriver running this is not a problem that occurs)

I've looked around on forums here and checked that my covers in library are 100% cached, audio files have not been analyzed (i've tried running that process manually and not doing anything else but after 15 minutes of scanning and updating tags my swap usage starts increasing and I basically need to reboot to continue working normally).

I'm using latest macos version 11.4 and jriver 28.0.32 in "audio only mode" (i even disabled extra features like network server, split view etc leaving just basic audio-related functions).

Any idea what might be an issue?

  • Where did I put my teeth?

MC does some things in the beginning that will slow it down, but it will speed up again when finished.  Thumbnailing, for example.

There is a Reporter function under Services in the tree on the left.

It currently shows following info. I have a suspicion that analyzing audio files caused the spike in resource usage (I've stopped it so it sits at 17%). I'll try just playing audio for a while and monitoring memory/CPU usage. If it's OK for a few hours I'll try rebooting and running the analyze audio function again without anything else running to see if that's what is causing issues.

I understand that it needs resources to work but if it slows the system down to a point when even mouse movements become erratic then there might be some issue there.

Thanks for replying, will report back  :)

It might also be thumbnailing.
Once it works it's way through your files the cpu usage will return to normal.
You can control the thumbnailing in options by reducing the priority to low (search box at the bottom of options, type in thumb).
For audio analysis you could turn it off in auto-import and just choose to use fewer cores when you trigger it manually.

Upon further testing:

Just playing music works fine, no excess ram/swap usage. So, I decided to test the Analyze Audio function.

I've rebooted the mini, launched MC, opened the Analyze Audio window and left it to work on the rest of my collection - I watched it for a while and it seemed to eat up the "Cached Files" part of memory right up until it hit 16GB (total, combined with "Used Memory") and then it went into swap (that was after about 100-200 files scanned).

I left it there to do its thing and came back after an hour or so... to a rebooted system :o
It managed to chew trough another ~800-1000 files it seems before the whole thing crashed (looking at the number still left to scan).

It looks to me like it's some kind of memory management issue, not sure if on JRiver part or MacOS but that kind of behavior cannot be normal? :-\

EDIT: also, exiting MC does not free up the swap/cached files part of memory. So doing the analysis in chunks would require rebooting in between it seems.

EDIT 2: Here's the crash report.

Anything other than JRiver in use?  Plug-ins, etc.

No, it was after a clean reboot with nothing running in the background except what I normally have running (nextcloud sync menu icon, forklift 3 menu icon).
I did not install any additional plugins into JRiver.

Searching for
CORE 0 recently retired instr at xxxxxx

Returns a lot of hits mostly issues with either sleeping under various conditions or monitors.

Most modern memory managment schemes don't "return" cached memory to 0. Inactive cached memory is simply removed.
Not sure about swap in MacOS but I think that's similar.

Did you try a single core analyze? That might help track down the issue.

I tested this using using "1 file at a time" and "4 files at a time" processing (from the panic log above).

The result seems the same (increasing memory usage), only with "1-file at a time" the process of resource consumption rise and system becoming unresponsive takes longer (I did not wait until complete crash with the 1-file method).

I have sleep disabled on this machine.

Where is your media stored?
Are you doing audio analysis of video tracks as well?
What are the formats your are using?

All my files are stored on an SMB share from a NAS (OpenMediaVault) on my LAN.
There are no video tracks or anything else besides music on that share.
All my files are FLACs and ~99% of them are 16/44 CD rips (with some rare 24/44 downloads here and there)

Thanks, I'll see if I can duplicate it. The different filesystem is interesting, there are some file operations that are different on remote filesystems.

If anyone is still interested: I've tested this behavior further and I've found that while doing Audio Analysis the file cache portion of memory usage consistently rises BUT it can be freed by remounting the network share (you don't even have to close jriver)

So basically, it can be done in chunks while watching the Activity Monitor ram usage. Once it hits swap though it's best to stop and remount the share because it WILL crash the system eventually if left alone. Not ideal but with 16GB of memory I could do it in about ~400-500 files per batch without running into swap. I think this could be a bigger issue on the 8GB macs...

This seems to have something to do with the way macos handles network drives? Not sure,

Another bit of info: after buying jriver mc license (you guys are really the "only game in town" on macos it seems ;) ) I installed it also on my old Macbook Air with i5-5xxx and 8GB of RAM.

I ran the media import process from the same share and somehow it found more files to analyze (maybe my M1 stored some info only locally, not in tags? anyway the number of files was the same it just re-analyzed about 500 of them).

It chewed through them no problem (albeit slower) WITHOUT the same file cache/swap issue!

So it seems this is limited to the ARM platform.

That's quite interesting.

There are still at least 2 variables, one the arch, the other the NAS connection.
Disconnecting the Mount likely kicks out the file modification notification.
It would be interesting to see if the M1 would still have the issue with local files.

It's possible there is a bug in the notify system in general on the M1 or over the network. It really shouldn't be trying to do that over SMB, I'm pretty certain SMB doesn't support it.

Having just started using the app over the last week (on an M1 Mac mini) I can confirm very high kernel_task levels, in fact forcing a reboot today because everything starting grinding to a halt. FWIW I'm not using any DSP or output changes at all... just playing the files as they are.

What's the size of your library? Where are the media files stored?
What build of MC are you running?
Thanks.

Small library, all audio 3,059 Flac files running from a Samsung T-7 SSD. I'm running MC 30.0.49

  • Where did I put my teeth?

Are the files stored locally?

Yes
Do you have an optical drive attached? Are you using the MC TV service at all?
Can you attach a log? We are not seeing these kinds of slowdowns without being attached to a library server.

It has been running ok since my last reboot, I'll grab a log if it bogs down again.

No, I don't use an optical or any of the video features, just audio
