Hint: try unchecking the "cd text" option if you're getting errors on audio burns.

How do you know you're using the new burning engine?  Is it controlled by the "generic" flag?

I ask because in a thread on the V8 board you mentioned that CD-TEXT artist and title should be working correctly now but it's still being written  as "artist - album" in the title field.

I'd also suggest that the following things also be reported:  connection method (motherboard IDE, add-on IDE (with model), SCSI), whether internal or external ASPI is in use, and if external, which version.  All of these things made a difference for me.

 Please try the next release. It will be more clear as to when you are using our new burning engine. You say your TDK 321040 drive does work with MJ with both options unchecked (internal aspi, generic burner)? Put it in test mode and select the cd-text option. Try burning an audio CD. If it starts out saying "burning lead-in with cd-text", it's using our new engine.

NONE, NADA, EL ZIPPO of my Firewire CD-R units are even visible in MJ 9. My old SCSI Yamaha 2100 works fust fine though.

All 4 of my CD-Rs show up as CD readers although playback fails on every one of them.

Once you have it turned on, you can confirm that it's working by burning a CD with cross fading on.

Rats.   I'm going to have to retract any earlier comments about the new burning engine seeming to work ok.   After checking "generic" I've been unable to successfully burn.   Tried 3 times.  The first and last times, when I pressed start, I got a "flying paper" progress box with no messages in it that just hung there permanently.  Had to kill MJ.  The second time, I got past that but after burning the last track, MJ hung with the drive locked.  I had to kill MJ then reboot to get access to the drive again.

Twice (don't remember which times) MJ downloaded a plug-in just after pressing start.

I'll test more when I get home this evening.

Weird,  I burned with Generic=Off and got a good burn but no cd-text.

With Generic=On I get the flying folders and a hung machine.

John, just uninstalled 9.0.73 and istalled 9.0.74, Now MJ won't detect my buner at all. As stated before I have the newest aspi layer from adaptec, but in this build, I cannot check "use generic aspi" MJ won't allow it. Also it won't detect it even with "use internal aspi checked. 9.0.74 is mostly no help.

2 burners attached via Silicon Image 0680 ATA/133 PCI board:

With the internal engine, and "decode files directly to CD" unchecked, the CD Burning Process dialog hangs with the flying paper progress box missing the status, file progress, and write progress.   Have to kill MJ.  Same for both burners.

With the "decode files directly to CD"  checked, the burn proceeds but hangs as it finishes the last track.  Pressing Cancel results in a permanent "Please Wait" dialog.   Have to kill MJ.  For the TDK drive, the drive light changes from red to yellow but stays that way permanently.  I have to kill MJ, then reboot to get the TDK back.

On the plus side... cd-text is now written correctly and it seems I can now READ cd-text as well.

Update: If I move the burners to the on-board IDE controller, I get the same behaviour.  If I move the burners to a Promise ATA/100 IDE card, the internal ASPI doesn't recognize the burners and if I use the Adaptec ASPI, the burners are recognized but the old engine is used even if the "use internal..." box is checked.

Think of it as three tier software:
MJ -> burning engine -> ASPI

MJ communicates with the burning engine, which sends commands to the burner via the ASPI layer.

MJ is always the same. The burning engine can be either the old Goldenhawk or our new burning engine (use internal burning engine = our new one). The ASPI layer can be either our internal one or the external Adaptec ASPI layer.

For testing the new burning engine, the ASPI setting doesn't matter much, just use whatever worked for you in the past.

Could you describe the symptoms of the failure? Does it come up with an error message or just freeze? Does it work doing a data mode burn?

From your system info, it looks like you're still on build 9.0.73. Please try build 74 and see if you can get the cross fading. Check the "use internal burning engine" checkbox and "apply current playback settings".

So burning works fine, playing also, but the files are not crossfaded, just burned like normal

I've got one drive that gives me the same error (it's a Pioneer DVD burner), so maybe if I can solve it for that drive, the fix will work on yours. Thanks for the feedback.

I'm not sure what's causing that. The cross-fade works fine here. Maybe it has to do with our switching the registry settings around. Could you try an uninstall/reinstall (letting it remove registry entries)?

I've replicated a similar problem on a TDK burner we have here. Hopefully fixing it will also fix your problem.

I wonder if you're having the same problem I have when I attach my burners to the Promise ATA/100 PCI board?  No matter how I set the "use internal..." flag, it always uses the old burning engine.  No crossfade and the old style CD-Text.

How is the Plextor connected?  Have you tried the internal ASPI?   Maybe the Adaptec 4.72 ASPI will help?

I think we have the same problem.  When I connect to the Promise controller, I have to use the external aspi just to get the burner recognized but even then it forces the old engine.

Good news.  The 9.0.75 release fixed the problem with hanging and locking the drive after writing the last track.  

Still have the problem with the hanging cd burning progress dialog a tthe start of a burn with "decode directoy to cd" unchecked.  Both TDK and Sony burners.

Thanks John.   Not sure if this makes a difference, but it never frinishes.  When I try a test of burning 2 tracks, the progress dialog comes up, there's a flurry of disk activity for about 15 seconds but no wav files are written in the temp directory and the drive never spins up.  I let it sit for 20 minutes last night to see what would happen.  Finally had to kill it.

Good news on the Promise card.  There are tons of them out there sold under the Maxtor name.  Thanks again.

My burner "Iomega Predator " USB2 version.
This was the same with the last build I had. It is the same story in Win2k. With version 8 all was well.
The new presentation with V9 is very good, the picture stuf is cool too.

- When trying to write a CDR with playback settings selected, Writing goes fine until the end I get the error message : "No additional sense information". Then I cannot eject my CD anymore until I powerdown my PC and back on .

BUT, when trying this CD into my normal audio CD player, it works and it is crossfaded, so a big progress.

Thanks for the update bennyd. I know what the problem is with the error at the end and it will be fixed in the next build.

Also, for those with USB and Firewire drives (and maybe add-in IDE controllers like Promise ATA100), the next release might start recognizing your burners.

I have tested the new internal burning engine with my Iomega CDRW9600INT-B (probably actually a LiteOn original manufacture).

The internal engine appeared to burn a data CD OK, almost full with MP3's.  But at the end I have a CD-ROM on which there are no files visible in about half the folders (i.e. Artists).  Nevertheless, Windows Explorer indicates the disk is almost full.

I have always suffered from underrun errors in MJ8 using the Goldenhawk driver for this drive - despite it having hardware underrun protection. This is still true in MJ9.

There were no buffer underruns encountered with the new internal engine.  Just faulty data, it seems.  Attempting to play the newly-created CD-ROM in an MP3 CD-player, it starts to read the directory, but fails out after counting up to about 80% of the files, and resets.

Is there a reason the internal engine appears to burn the files in an apparently random order?  Not true with the Goldenhawk engine.

All in all, I have never successfully burned a disk with either MJ8 or MJ9. Only with RealOne (which I have abandoned due to cost and functionality) and Nero.

I think this will be fixed in the next release. Please try it and let us know.

We'll get it figured out. If you could email me a file, I could probably get it fixed. Just prepare the same data CD that had the errors previously, but instead of burning it, choose "Save Folder Structure" from the Options menu and save it somewhere on your hard disk. It will be a very small file with the extension "mjf". Please email it to me at johnt @ jriver.com (without the spaces).
Also, try downloading the next release (hopefully today) and try doing an audio burn. If that works ok, it would kind of confirm my suspicion that your data CD problem is due to a bug in the creation of the ISO9660 file system on CD.
In the meantime, I'll throw some large data CD tests at MJ today.
You could also try a small data CD, maybe with folder creation turned off to see it that works. This would be further evidence of an error in the MJ file system creation.

Using "Internal ASPI":

Burn stops after a song or so, with this error:

Error:'WRITE' command failed on device 0:0:0
Unexpected TARGET error (04h 00h 04h)

Trying to erase a disk, gives this error, then crashes the program:

Error: 'ERASE DISK' command failed on device 0:0:0
Unexpected TARGET error (04h 00h 04h)

Then I Unchecked "use internal ASPI", and closed and re-opened MJ9. Before burning, I got the message telling me there was no ASPI installed on my system, and would I like to download and install. I declined and tried a burn. Got this message:

Error: 'START DAO RECORDING' command failed on device 0:0:0
Unable to set disc parameters

Tried another burn, when I got the message about no ASPI on my system, I tried downloading and installing it. As it was installing a DOS window popped up just for a second, behind another window, so most of it was hidden. I only saw it for an instant, but I'm pretty sure it said something about "file in use". I expect it's trying to install files over top of other files that are in use.

Rebooted my machine and loaded up MJ. Tried another burn, and got the message about ASPI not being installed, so I tried installing it yet again. Same DOS window, didn't look like it installed.

So my big question is:

What are the rules for when you use the internal ASPI, when you use the downloaded one, and when you use none at all?

Looking a lot better.  My drives are correctly recognized when connected to the Promise ATA/100 card.

On my laptop I now have a sort-of problem.  The internal ASPI layer is causing my DVD-ROM to show up in MJ as a burner.  Too bad it really isn't.

Please check the option "Use internal burner". Currently you're on the old Goldenhawk burning engine. I can tell because of the error message you got and also your system info shows: "Use MJ Engine:No ". I'm going to redo the burning options page to make all this clearer, as soon as I can get the worst bugs fixed.

That is odd. I'll have to think about that one. Glad the ATA100 drives are working.

I'm still working on an erasing CD/RW problem with TDK drives.
I'm also looking into the data CD problem reported earlier by mcphzgig. If you could send me that file I talked about (ending with .mjf) it might be easier to debug.

How about others that had drive recognition problems with USB, Firewire, etc. (jgourd, garfunkle, tangodude...)? Does this build fix it?

Moreover, yesterday to erase a CD-RW seem take a very long time (or may be never finish, I don't know since I cancelled before the end). With this build, it is normally fast.

Just a little concern: it displays "speed: x0".

Okay, so we're making a little progress. MJ now recognizes that there's a CD burner on my system. Unfortunately, when my Mitsumi CR-4804TE USB is hooked up, my DVD drive is recognized as a burner! When I disabled internal ASPI there was no burner recognized at all.

So to summarize, MJ recognizes there's a burner, if only it knew that the burner was the burner
