Full Screen Problems
« on: February 15, 2022, 08:47:20 am »

When open to full screen, while MC is 'thinking' to update view or perform a backup the interface expands to cover the Windows Taskbar until it has finished its' task.

Attempting to reach the taskbar during this time bring up the Windows warning that "MC is not responding: wait or close"

Is this a change in this particular version?

I have noticed this somewhat recently in MC 28, not in 28.0.106 only.
I paid little attention until I saw it repeat recently.

That's been happening for years. There's a long thread about it somewhere abouts here.

You can alt-tab to a different app while you wait for MC to finish its thing. I can't remember if win+d gets you the desktop or not... I think it might do though.

Can you give us a way to reproduce the stick you're seeing?  If something runs hard on the main thread of the program it could cause a disruption in the task bar.  We have tried to thread most heavy tools though.

Thanks.

I've been trying to find that old, long thread... no joy so far...

Here's a report from 2018... https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,116758.msg807445.html#msg807445
The user is running a "Remove all tags task"
Quote
Problem is, as soon as I switch to another program (or click anywhere in MC), MC will be unresponsive, stretch the screen vertically and cover the taskbar.

OK, I found it... At the start, a second thread is referenced, which contains, among others, this information:
Quote
With MC the behaviour is totally different:
the MC GUI expands \ takes over the entire screen, overlapping even Windows task bar
MC GUI becomes blurry \ out of focus
after some seconds a window pops up asking to close the program or to wait
if I choose to wait... then after other 10 to 20 seconds in addition, MC starts to work again and plays music and so on.

Then, the whole "Blurry white screen of wait" thread, from MC24 days, is here: https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,119418.0.html

Removing tags should be threaded now.  We made the change a while ago.

If anyone has reported the problem, please bump the thread and report any more details you can.

We can't fix "it happens a lot".

Next time I am working on files and this happens I will make note of the tasks MC was performing.

In the meantime, it did it this morning when I first started playback of Playing Now list left from yesterday, MC said "spinning up drive" during which time MC covered the Task Bar and turned white until music started playing.

It does it upon Library Backup - Yes save thumbnails, for one.
I will list others as I encounter them.

NOTE: It does not do this when MC is not in full-screen mode.

When MC is opened to full screen, clicking on another program's icon on the Taskbar should bring that program to the front and into focus, BUT repeatedly I find MC remains on top and will not allow the other program to come to the front.

I am forced to shrink MC in order to get to other programs.

Sorry, don't know what else to tell you at this point, but if I notice or think of anything I will post it.

Could having a huge library of lossless files contribute?
How about a complex file/folder naming structure, or Library Views?

What video hardware are you using?

Are the files local or on a network or USB drive?

I believe that the "blurry white screen" described above by Marco is Windows having trouble with something.  Eventually Windows may declare that MC isn't responding, but I believe it's Windows not getting what it needs (data).  And Windows gets to point the finger at someone else.

I have this same problem, but I believe it is a Windows 11 bug.

Hello, I am experiencing this problem since my first use of MC23.
I have a large library and every time I do some kind of operation (click on a view) under the Audio view tree, MC28 "starves" for 10-15 seconds...
Very annoying issue.
Regards, Andrea

Please describe your setup in some detail.  Drives, etc.  Where is MC's (database) library stored?

Hello JimH,
I am running Windows 10 32bit on laptop used only as audio player. Audio driver is the MOTU ASIO (on one system) and Beheringer ASIO (on another system).
My library spans 4 external HDDs and the MC28 library dBase is stored locally on HDD C: (solid state fast HDD).

MC28 DSP chain is now quite simple, output transport is set to 2ch stereo into 5.1 stream and 2 external VST2 plug-ins are used for 2ch Convolver (MeldaProduction MConvolverZ) and 2-way (4ch) X-over (Thuneau Allocator).

MC28 is not using excessive resources (280MB Ram total and 40..50% CPU usage while playing regular flac/ape files - this 40..50% CPU usage is including VST2 plug-ins).

Regards, Andrea

I have been seeing this, or something similar, on my NUC8 running latest Win11 with MC 28.0.106. I use JRVR.

The typical way it comes about is when I have a video playing, then I stop it to try to drag another video, from the external SSD plugged into usb, into playing playing now. I have to minimize MC first because there I can't bring up windows explorer. I believe when windows isn't letting windows file explorer appear there is an outline that appears around MC. I hope I am not making that last part up.

I don't have the NUC in front of me, but I can try to reproduce this later if it will be helpful.

So you're copying the whole video file from an external drive.  That would take a while.  It explains why the machine seems locked.

Try using MC's interface and the tree on the left to play it.

Also, are you certain that your drives are all plugged into USB 3.0 ports?

I can relatively reliable reproduce this importing a large (1,000 odd) number of images from a network drive.

This is Windows becoming unresponsive.  Just wait.

Yes, I made that part up.  What I was thinking about is this:
When MC won't let another window appear, the line under the folder symbol in the 'file explorer' taskbar button turns red. It is typically grey or blue.

I can reproduce the full screen issue. It happens every time I do the following:

Have a video playing in standard mode playing now (no issues here with bringing up other windows).
Then double click the playing video to make it full screen. Double click playing video again to get back to standard mode.
Now no other window will appear above MC. The 'File Explorer' taskbar button has a red line.

I tested with videos on my desktop using JRVR and Red October HQ, on NUC8 windows 11.

I get the same results on my alienware laptop. On that one the 'file explorer' taskbar button flashes red, which I must have seen before, hence my earlier comment about an outline appearing.
