Installing JRiver Media Center 29 on MacOS / OSX
« on: March 14, 2022, 12:08:24 pm »

Special note for Monterey 12.0.x
If MC crashes on start after updating a machine running MC to Monterey.
It appears there is a privacy and security permissions issue change in Monterey (12.0.x) that is solved by re-installing MC after the Monterey update is done.
Go to the Download Page for the stable build or the post at the top of this forum for the latest build.
Download and install it according to the instructions below.

Download and Install
Please download the version that matches your license.  MC29 is on the Download Page.  Older versions are in the Old Versions topic on our wiki.

Double click on the .dmg file to unpack the disk image and show the install window.

Drag Media Center 29 to the Applications shortcut shown in the install window (see the enclosed image).

Close the installer window and eject the Media Center 29 installer disk image (control-click or right click on the installer image and do eject).

Run Media Center 29 from the Applications folder (from the finder menu, Go->Applications and double click on Media Center 29).
If you are asked for accessibility permissions you must accept that (it's how MC deals with retina displays).
If you are asked for screen recording permissions, you need to accept that for MC's user interface to operate properly, MC uses that permission to copy from part of it's window to another part of it's window. It's not used for anything else.

Once MC is running you can control-click or right click on the Media Center 29 icon on the Dock, choose "Options" and select "Keep in Dock".

Converting Data from a previous version
You can back up your library from the File Menu in your older version and restore from the same menu in your new version.  MC will convert the data and settings and use them.  Your files won't be moved or altered.

Apple Support for Installing Applications

If you're upgrading, you can leave your older version installed until you're happy with the new one, and then uninstall the old version.

Licensing
The easiest way to enter your license without removing old versions of MC is to copy and paste it from your registration email into MC either at the startup splash screen if asked for it there or via Help->Registration Info when in the program. Using the .mjr with an old version installed may try to run the registration from the old version which is why we recommend the copy and paste method here.

I purchased MC 29 in March and just got around to installing it.  I sent a request for my registration codes and got an email with all the previous versions I have paid for, including MC 29.  The software was installed, but it did not replace MC 28 nor did it migrate the library as I think it did in the past.  The old library is in the ~/Library/Application Support/J River/Media Center 28/Library/ directory.

When I look at the J River/ directory there are subdirectories for all the versions of media center I have.  What is the correct procedure for moving the library to MC 29

The easiest way to do it is to make a copy of the Media Center 28 folder located in Application Support then rename it to Media Center 29 (while both Media Center 28 and Media Center 29 are fully closed).

Then search for Media Center 28 in settings in Media Center 29 and change those to Media Center 29.

Of course, I have to first rename the MC 29 folder that was installed with the application, I just called it original.  Then I could duplicate 29 and rename it to 29.  When I started MC 29, everything seemed to be OK.

What I can not see is a place for settings for MC 28 in MC29.  I see lots of library settings, but not specifically called MC 28 or 29, there are just library settings.

What am I missing?

Go down to the search bar in options and type in 28.

Trouble installing MC29
« Reply #6 on: June 02, 2022, 08:45:53 am »

I just upgraded to MC29 on my Mac M1 (Monterey OSX) and it downloaded as an ".mjr" file and not dmg.  I double checked it before purchasing and it was the mac version.  Am I missing something?  Is there a way to correct this without having to purchase again?

That .mjr file is the Registration File for MC  the DMG file that you need to download is in the Top Thread n this Forum

and no you don't need to purchase again

The mjr file is an Install Key, used for registering MC, as EnglishTiger says.

Problem about MAC version and license
« Reply #9 on: August 10, 2022, 02:32:00 pm »

I have bought right now a license for MAC, it seems to be a license for the new version , but I do not find it on the download page.  With the version 29, the registration refuses the license key, telling me that I am using an older version, and that I need to use the latest version ; can you tell me what I can do ? And how I can contact directly the JRiver support to fix the problem.

Thank you,
François C. for France.

Unfortunately the developer for MC for Mac and Linux is on vacation until the end of the month, and until he's back and can push out updates to MC29 to accept the new license it won't correctly work. If you can, try running the trial version and hopefully it lasts until then.

Thank you for the answer ; if a version MAC is not available, I would expect to get a registration code for version 29.
If there is no way to be in contact with the software dev&support team to fix the issue, I will ask to be paid back via PayPal because I do not want to wait and struggle for days and weeks. I hope this post will be seen by someone from software dev&support team.

It's our mistake and we're working on it now.  Could be a couple more days.  Thanks for your purchase.

OK, I can wait some days, just tell me what will be the next step for me :
-I will receive by mail a new registration code ?
or
-the registration code I currently have will be ok for version 29 MAC ?
or
-something else ?
And how I will be notified (mail or this forum or nothing).

Hello, it seems to work now with the new version 29.0.86, despite I did not get notification for that.

Is it possible to migrate all data/databases from MC29 for Windows to MC29 for Mac? If so, how?

On the latest builds, try saving a backup in MC on Windows and restoring it on Mac.  That moves the database itself, not your files.  If the files have the same structure on both, it should work.

The wiki has a topic called Moving Files.

It should work, as it supports both Intel and Apple Silicon-based Macs. If you're using really old macOS, that could prevent you from using MC29.

Really old at this time means older than 10.9 (even though we recommend 10.11 as a minimum).

after last Mac Os OS update, which is currently Monterey 12.6.6, MC29 started not booting regularly, finally i decided to reinstall it starting from a new download as recommended above. Now MC29 starts fine but it's impossible to play any file, I set my RME ADI-2 DAC as output device but MC29 always gives me "unsupported output format" regardless of file type and sampling, from MP3 to DSD it doesn't work. I tried Audirvana and it works fine...

When you get the error, read carefully and follow the advice on the error message.

Is it an M1 Mac?
