Convolution with two subwoofer
« on: May 09, 2022, 03:58:54 pm »

Hello everybody,
my question:
I've got a zotac pc with a HDMI that is connected to my Yamaha DSP Z7.
This AVR has only one SW output that feeds through a Y connector my two SW and since i want to use a convolution file for each of them and use different delays, i modified my JR configuration, using 7.1 source and routing sw channel to surround back L&R (copy Sub to RR and Sub to RL), and use these ones connected to my sw.
In the attachment my convolution cfg.
I'd like to know if this is correct,
Thank you  ;)

SW is Subwoofer?

Having both subs fed from the right input channel only is a bit odd
but need to know the complete intended routing to know if this is correct or not

Excuse me, i'll try to explain better:
since i do not use the surround back channels on my avr, i thought i could use them with my 2 subwoofer (SW) for the reasons I explained in the first post.
So I moved to 7.1 output format as in pic #1, add sw channel to RR & RL (surround Rear Right & surround Rear Left ) as in pic #2,
and then manage the level in room correction as in pic #3, and finally use convolution as I explained in first post.

I hope this is clearer  :D

Hi,
Nope, not clearer ;)
The speaker setup is not 100% clear: should the Subwoofer be part of a stereo setup (one sub for left, one for right) or do you use them as LFE with a DBA?
Also, where are the subs connected? I assume sbl and sbr pre outs

Case 1:
- Not „add“ but „copy“ left to sbl and right to sbr. Why? You use jrss mixing, so the surround are mixed to surround back
- make your convolution as a semi-active measurement

Case 2:
- copy ch 4 (subwoofer)of the signal to sbl+sbr, if you want to do any adjustments in jriver before convolution! If no, do nothing
- you need 8 outputs in your config file
- use the two different files directly in your file

Hi Thorsten,
thanks for your reply.
The subwoofers were connected with a Y connector to the single LFE/SW output of the AVR, so it is mono.
Now that output physically is not used, because they are connected to the SBL & SBR, in that way i thought i could use two separate convolver files.
My concerns are about that part: i don't know i the mapping is correct, even i did a check with single channel with the solo option in room correction and it seems to be correct
So i think is case #2  :)
To me is not clear why I have to have 8 output when i have only 6 ?
Please could you explain last line?

Thank you very much

If you are playing stereo content then output format is wrong, you probably want the 2.1 in. 7.1 container option to avoid upmixing

Why do you think you have 6 channel output when you have selected 8? Sending silence to some channels is still sending data to those channels

I assume you are sure your avr simply passes through this signal without further processing?

Yes, i selected "STRAIGHT" function in my AVR so it is not processing channell signals.
Mine is an attempt to connect 2 SW to 1 LFE output, and using JR capabilities to avoid to buy a miniDSP that permits to do that.
How can i use a 2.1 in a 7.1 container?

Your signal chain is still unclear

Is this stereo content or multichannel?
What do you intend to use to create the SW content? JRiver room correction? The convolver?

It would be much easier to tell you how to configure it if you said what you were trying to do **exactly** because the details do matter

Thank you for the patience
Hdd with FLAC file  (stereo) >. PC Zotac with jr > HDMI > avr Yamaha  >  Mains + 2 subwoofers.
Since Yamaha avr has 1 sw output only , i would like to know of there Is a solution through jr to drive them with their own separate file in such a Say ti ha è separate delay and convolution. At the Moment i nave to use  One for both, and i dont think Is correct .
I beg your pardon for my English. ::)

Ok so is it using each sub as the bottom way for each main channel  (what some call stereo bass) or a mono SW channel which has different filters applied to each physical output to improve room response?

And don‘t forget about the normal suurounds, which seems to be also installed.
So, I think you connect at our outputs of the yammi:
Left: Main left (ch1)
Right: Main right (ch2)
Surround left: surround left (ch7
Surround right: surround right (ch8)
Surround back left: subwoofer left (ch5)
Surround back right: subwoofer right (ch6)

If this is correct, then we‘re talking about case #1  :D

Edit: my fault! With 7.1 output, sbl/sbr are ch 5 and 6 and sl/sr are 7 and 8! Always mix it up….

Why do you think there are surrounds involved?

I can avoid to use surround L/R speakers if could be usefull to get the whole stuff working  ;)

Still confused then, you said mains+2 subs but now say there are surrounds. I think I have to give up attempting to help if you won't just simply state what you are trying to do in one post.

Sorry, it was not my intention
i'll try one last time
Is there a way to drive 2 subwoofers separately  + 2 mains to play stereo content,
with the subwoofer connected to surround / surround back after routed to these output?

Thank you

Surrounds are mentioned in the config-file in the first post  ;)

Whatsoever, everything is possible. The understanding problem is not the surrounds but the sub integration.

I think you should rename it for yourself: what you want are semi-active loudspeakers with a digital crossover between bass (aka sub) and mid-high (aka normal speaker).
Therefore, you should be able to calculate it with your convolution software. And then just route the signals as I wrote some posts above.

Surrounds are mentioned in the config file but the source content is stereo and there is still no idea on where the subwoofer content comes from or where the surround content comes from in fact given that none of the configuration so far can really be trusted. I
I think it's impossible to say how to configure this correctly without really knowing what the intent is so will leave it at that.
