Stream Deck plugin?
« on: June 02, 2022, 08:57:03 am »

Not sure if I'm posting this in the right place, but is anyone aware of a plugin for the Elgato Stream Deck that can control JRiver Media Center? Or useful tips for piecing together some controls?

I currently have a JRiver folder on my Stream Deck that allows me to play/pause, skip forward or back, stop, raise/lower volume, open Media Center, and rank the current song 1-5 stars. I'd like to have a button that show info about the currently playing song (title, album art, and/or current star rating), but I have no idea how to do this. I think there is a Spotify plugin for Stream Deck that does something like that.

For background, I have JRiver on my personal desktop, and I plug my work laptop into the same monitor that I use for my desktop. I listen to music on my desktop while working on my work computer, so I can't see or control JRiver while working, but the Stream Deck allows me to do this. I know there are other options (using my laptop or phone to control the music server on my desktop, which I've been doing for a while). Even so, I'm interested in using Stream Deck to do this. Thanks for any help!

I’d be interested to know the level of integration with this too. The Stream Deck + could open up lots of possibilities with the rotary encoders. Scrolling through Artists or other info, etc. Could make for a elegant controller.

I read a little about it.  Apparently you can use software to program it.  That might allow you to get some functionality through our API:

alternatively, I've been playing on and off with touch portal as a way to repurpose old tablets as touch-screen controllers.

I think that ultimately this is the route I will go. It’s likely cheaper, less faff and proven.

Still, Stream Deck looks like a potentially interesting option.

HA is *really* useful here. Though to get something beautiful and workable, you may need to spend a bunch of time.
I have a pretty significant # of wall mounted tablets around the house that handle smart home functions. There's also a Surface at my desk which does more computer centric control and the media areas have their own couch tablets for media / environment controls.

Android tablets actually kind of suck for this. I have a bunch of Fire7s and I'm pretty tired of them. You *can* get rid of most of the problems but without Root, you need to use the accelerometer to detect when someone touch the screen to turn it on. That's pretty garbage, it should not require a strong 'tap' to turn on the display.

There's a few fanless x86 tablets out there (no specific SKUs, sorry, I just don't want to kill the market) that are dirt cheap used and do a fantastic job for this purpose, like shockingly cheap.

Win10 IoT if you don't like linux, package your control interface into an electron app and you're good to go.

^^ How you get the whole 'tablet screen off until touch' functionality under Windows. It doesn't sleep the machine or anything which is VITAL for responsiveness and actually one of the problems with Android for this purpose. The memory management in Android is garbage for these situations where we want the app 100% active at all times, forget the ability to quickly switch apps without any sort of 'reloading'. That's why I go with x86 hardware with a real OS I can control.

On android, Tasker is pretty good at 'working around' some of the limitations, and if you want a just 'out of the box' solution for an android app that can display a webpage, Fully Kiosk is the one to pick.
Seriously tho, just go with proper hardware and call it a day.

Hello all,

For what it's worth, I've managed to put my Stream Deck to good use with JRiver without a dedicated plug-in, just using various keyboard shortcuts and basic scripting.  I continue to be amazed with JRiver (thanks to the developers who work on JRiver) and I learn new stuff every weekend (when I can play around with it).

A few months back, I set up my Stream Deck with a music button, and from that menu I can play a variety of playlists with a push of a button.  So far, it works decently well.  Along with the other menus that allow me to change lights and load specific websites and utilities, the Stream Deck is a solid little productivity hack.  And no, I actually don't stream anything, so I don't use the Stream Deck for its "real" purpose.

Hope this helps someone or just gives someone some good ideas.

Nice! Do you have a Stream Deck +? It would be cool if it could display the currently playing track info on the display. Also for scrolling through artists/albums, etc.

I would be interested to hear more about how you've implemented JRiver control on your Stream Deck. I also would like to be be able to display currently playing track info. Also, as I mentioned in the original post, I have 5 buttons for rating songs (1-5 stars), but some kind of dynamic icon to show how many stars the currently playing song is rated would be nice. I'm also interested in how you did the playlists...I hadn't thought of that and maybe I could figure it out if I look into it, but still curious to hear how you did it.

The only way I use MC on my Steam Deck is using Panel in a web browser (Chrome in this case).

Can you explain what you mean by that? I haven't used Panel. How do you use Stream Deck with it?

Oh, STREAM Deck. I thought you said STEAM Deck. *facepalms at Valve naming it so close to the Stream Deck*

My bad, carry on. :-X
