Tone Mapping improvements
« on: November 11, 2022, 12:04:00 pm »

I recently compared the tone mapping between madVR, MPV and JRiver. MPV and JRiver have similar problems compared to madVR. They are not able to tone map every picture to an adequate brightness. With JRiver there are always scenes (e.g. in "Luca") which are too dim. If the slider for brightness is adjusted (or the peak measurement is activated/deactivated) other movies/scenes don't fit in average brightness.

Beside that the automatic brightness adjustment doesn't work well. In "The Hobbit 1" there is a strange brightness jump in chapter 2 when the camera pans over the hill to the sky.

And a third observation: JRiver's tone mapping has a slight orange tint in comparison to the other two.

Are these things going to be fixed or optimized? :)

What is your video setting in MC?

Do you mean JRVR (our renderer) when you say JRiver?

What is the video you're playing?

What is your video setting in MC?

I played around with the marked settings. But none of the combinations were really satisfying regarding the average brightness for all scenes.

Yes, I mean the internal renderer JRVR.

I was testing with "Luca" and "The Hobbit", because the first one has very high average brightness (much >100 Nits) and the second one has a few bright areas with high saturation.

Take a look at jmone's posts here:
https://yabb.jriver.com/interact/index.php/topic,134404.msg930992.html#msg930992

These things have nothing to do with the problems I'm talking about. I compared tone mapping in software and don't want to pass through untouched HDR to my projector. I know what I'm doing here. I'm in HTPC and HT stuff since 20 years now (just google me). :)

My concern is to get a tone mapping that can compete to that of madVR to have an alternative. If JRiver (and MPV) get improved in this regard it can exist some day. That's why I started the topic.

Did you read it carefully?

Re-reading your original post, I'd suggest the first thing is to get the Desktop looking correct:
- Turn on HDR in Windows 11
- Check if your TV is in HDR mode / getting HDR

Your Win11 desktop should look "normal" when HDR is turned on.  If it does not, then that is the first thing to trouble shoot.

Do you mean our renderer?  JRVR is JRiver Video Renderer.  JRiver is the company and the player.

Patience here, please.  We can get you help, but it's the weekend.

Did you read it carefully?

Yes. And as I stated I don't talk about newbie problems here where the desktop is not correctly calibrated to BT.709/DCI-P3 and my screen expects PQ EOTF or similar things. I'm talking about comparing the quality of tone mapping with correct settings.
The three tone mappings look very similar, but there are some major problems in JRVR regarding the constantness of average brightness in different scenes/movies (not in all!). I found no settings to fit them all. Which is a different situation with madVR. Beside the two other problems I found.

Yes, I mean JRVR. Maybe that was a bit msleading.

I don't need help. I just want to discuss with a developer if tone mapping is getting improved any further. I can help providing difficult scenes and test betas etc.  :)

There will always be improvements coming, but right now we are focusing on other topics. There are some fixes coming soon that help with one aspect of it, but overall this will be some time before we visit this topic again.

It would be awesome if JRiver has the same upscale and tonemapping quality like madvr. I think this would be a huge purchase reason for all the home cinema enthusiasts.
At the moment I use JRiver 30 with the latest Madvr version. Excellent picture. But the timebomb sucks.

Our aim with JRVR is excellence in reliability and quality without complexity.

madVR may be a better choice if you're the ultimate tweaker.

Cut Jim and JRiver a break here. JRVR is brand new.
The fact that it even kind of competes with MadVR which has been around forever is impressive.
I have high hopes that it will continue to improve, and the foundation which it is based off of, is extremely strong.

MadVR and  Hendrik's LAV filters had a much bigger testing base since they could be hooked to many open source , free media players and thus got a lot of feedbacks on several forums like doom9 and others during their development stage. JRVR despite having the much talented and revered  Hendrik himself working on  it does not get feedback from as many users as it is limited to MC only.

JRVR is well tested now.  It's been around for more than a year and has had a lot of use.

Closing this now.
